This is mainly coming from someone whose only recently started listening to Opeth with Ghost Reveries which I thought was ok (very interesting riffs all around but it doesn't hold up all together that well for me) and Damnation which was solid (symphonic and folky which is the sort of modern progressive rock I really enjoy). This has been a long time coming. I think its important to emphasize up to this point from the 7 Swans albums I've listened, Filth was my favorite one. if anything else, this is the embodiment of that gangsta shit. The sort of music your parents would warn you about listening cause all they rap about is drugs and violence. And its true about this record, but its also an perfect argument against this attitude cause it distillates the bleakness and illness of the gangster lifestyle into cold yet perfectly flowing lyrics and incredible sampling prowess.
