For me, this is the closest an album could get to perfection. Out of everything I listened to, this is easily my favorite album of all time. As a result Madlib’s production and MF DOOM’s lyrics, there wasn’t a single skippable track. The smooth instrumental of curls with even smoother flow, the amazing piano chords in Figaro, the accordion sample in Accordion, are just a few of the countless highlights. The plethora of iconic bars are nothing short of amazing. “Villain ... read more
Spiderland is easily one of my favorite LPs of all time. Each track is dark, atmospheric, and most of all engaging from beginning to end. The album’s opening, Breadcrumb Trail, describes a story of boy meeting a fortune teller at a carnival. The main highlight for me on this song is the guitar as it fucking kicks ass. The following song Nosferatu Man is an interesting description of a falling out of a relationship through the use of vampiric imagery. Don, Aman seemed to be about an ... read more
Troupeau Bleu by Cortex is a truly remarkable album. I can confidently say it is slowly becoming one of my overall favorite jazz projects. I feel like the word that best describes the album is pure beauty. The instrumentals are fantastic, a couple of highlights being L'enfant Samba, La Rue, and Huit octobre 1971. I mean, there's a reason this project got sampled so much throughout the years. My favorite part of the record has to be the incredible vocals from Maeva Borzakian. Her voice is ... read more
Doris manages to have some iconic highs but just as many disappointing tracks. Songs like Burgundy, Chum, and Sunday are fucking incredible. Additionally, Hearing Earl rap about his struggles gets me sad. Bars like, "It's probably been 12 years since my father left, left me fatherless. And I just used to say I hate him in dishonest jest. When honestly, I miss this nigga like when I was six and every time I got the chance to say it, I would swallow it", perfectly exemplify this ... read more
Head Hunters is a groovy and fun jazz record. Although I liked all the songs, Watermelon Man is the biggest highlight out of the four. While the other tracks started just as well, I gradually lost interest after the first 10 minutes. On the other hand, Watermelon Man didn't overstay its welcome and was engaging from beginning to end. All the other tracks were solid as well, Chameleon being my favorite besides the prior mentioned Watermelon Man. Overall, banger ass album.
Although I may not that much of a Kendrick fan, I can confidently say he is the best rapper of our time. He easily has one of the most consistent and beloved discographies of modern rap. This and TPAB are the cornerstones of modern hip hop for a reason. Money Trees, Sing About Me I’m Dying Of Thirst, m.A.A.d city, and Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe gotta be some of my favorites from Kendrick. The story and direction of the album is incredible as well. This is one of the best depictions of ... read more
