Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85–92

Edit: i think its about time i wrote an actual review for this masterpiece.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is one of my favorite albums of all time. It is so deeply personal, yet so intensely danceable. This is a living, breathing piece of music, able to adapt and take the mood of any scenario. While the beats and style may not be "ambient" per se, the way it's crafted makes it the perfect backdrop music. Everyday life made me hopeful that we'd get to see coldplay create another expansive project on the level of viva la vida. As soon as higher power came out, I knew all hope was lost. My universe poured salt on that wound.

Everywhere at the end of time-
A long and bleak album about dementia. Uses the ambient style to add to the illusion of time passing. Combines ballroom dance with rhythmic vinyl crackle, but slowly turns into something darker and terrifying. A near 7 hour behemoth that will leave you emotionally devastated for weeks, if not more. But still, the techniques this album uses are incredible and it is hard to deny The Caretaker's musical prowess.

Easily the most drone-heavy gybe album. It's less of a grand story about some massive political conflict, and more of an experiment with a more dense type of storytelling. This thing really hit me when I stopped trying to look for meaning in the tracks and just let the drones wash over me.

Autechre - Tri Repetae

These songs all have extremely natural progression, but still come off as incredibly complex and nuanced. I can see any track here being someone's favorite. It's such a balanced project and a staple of electronic music in general.

This thing definitely masters the art of painting a picture using sound. The landscapes are so vivid and real. There's a tangible element of restrained hostility through some of the parts, and when the dark side of this album shows... all hell breaks loose.
