808s and Heartbreak is Kanye West’s 4th studio album, and a major switch-up from its sample-heavy rap predecessors.
In my opinion, this album is Kanye’s magnum opus. 808s was so incredibly revolutionary, it is almost impossible to comprehend it is nearing 20 years of age. Street Lights is one of my favorite Kanye songs and is just such an incredible message combined with marvelous autotuned vocals and a stunning instrumental. The cockiness on Heartless is Kanye at his best. ... read more
EDIT: This album grew off me even more in the week after first listening. Its just really bland and boring even if it is technically well made.
Sufjan Stevens’ ‘Illinois’ is a pretty good album. The instrumentals were complex and grand, and were definitely the highlight of the album for me. Stevens voice sounds technically nice but doesn’t wow me at all. It conveyed the emotions he was going for nicely, but just came off largely uninteresting at times. A lot of the ... read more
This album is extremely mediocre, and easily his worst. Peggy uses the exact same flow the entire album, which got pretty stale. The dubstep production on the first third of the album was very strange, and I don’t think it fits his style at all. I did like a lot of the production, with classic Peggy mixing creating an abrasive and noisy style. The rapping just ruins these beats unfortunately and makes this a meh album.
‘ICEMAN’ is the epitome of a Drake release post-Views. It is way too long for no reason, Drake has nothing to say as a writer, and extremely inconsistent. On ‘ICEMAN’ though, I thought Drake had a couple of his best tracks in years, especially with songs like ‘Firm Friends’ where Drake flows over an awesome Conductor beat. If Drake hired ghost writers (there is no shame in this) and cut a tracklist down to actually be concise, he could easily make a 70+/100 ... read more
I don’t really get the hype behind this album. To me it was interestingly atmospheric, but fell flat for minutes at a time. Some stretches were very empty and boring to listen to. This album essentially felt like a 35 minute stretched out interlude between two actual songs. Hopefully it grows on me in the future.
After listening to ‘Maid of Honor’, the bar geniunely could not have been lower. Somehow, Drake managed to make another sub 1/10 album. This is probably higher than what I rated it, but I find trap-soul rnb so obnoxious and I absolutely hate it. There is no redeeming quality or moment over the entire 36 minutes, and I hope to never hear any of these songs again.
