Radiohead - Pablo Honey

Absolutely do not hate this album. I think a lot of Radiohead fans never truly gave this LP a chance. It is weirdly shoegaze-y at parts and some of the genius of a Radiohead can be seen here. In MOST songs I would argue!

Blow Out is an incredible track. One of my favorite Radiohead songs of all time.

People not liking Creep are contradicting themselves. Half of Ok Computer's songs sound like Creep.

Thinking About You is an easy to hate track since the vocals are a little awkward, but even ... read more

Built to Spill - Perfect from Now On

1. Randy Described Eternity // 5
(for 1/3 of the LP this is the greatest indie record of all time.)
2. I Would Hurt a Fly // 5
(truly astonishing guitar play. it is sometimes very shoegaze-y. that is the appeal of the album. it is also so wonderfully complex that you will miss details the first time listening to it.)
3. Stop The Show // 5
(Don’t know any songs that are structured the way this song. and then the pay-off is wonderful. maybe Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out.)

Hearing the reactions of Arcade Fire being a chore and all - they always have been.

(I do prefer dance-y repetitiveness over the...whatever arcade fire was doing on some mediocre tracks on the suburbs/neon bible - it sounds harsh - but arcade fire is a pretentious band.)

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

it has a lot of meat surrounding the opening, middle and ending part. it is an excellent album - but with a looot of these songs it feels like they beat me to death with the same structure. endlessly predictable.

except for the insanely good ones.

3. Modern Man // 3.5
4. Rococo // 3.5
5. Empty Room // 3.5-4

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

It is in some odd ways a step and step down over Funeral. Much prefer the atmosphere here. But none the songs (except My Body is a Cage) are as good as half of the songs on Funeral.

1.2 Cloud of Unknowing // 3-3.5

1.4 People Like Us // 3.5

2.3 The Glowing Man // 5

unforgettable second half.

Swans - The Beggar

this LP feels like the sun is finally rising above the dark surreal world.

and then you get sucked back right in.

A1. The Paradise // 4
A2. Paradise is Mine // 4
(the main grove is fantastic. missed potential to add Filth and To Be Kind rawness.)
A3. Los Angeles: City of Death // 3.5-4
A4. Michael is Done // 4-4.5
(beautiful subtle transitions.)
A5. Unforming // 3
(it doesn't work nearly as good as it thinks it does.)

a (partially) good debut after years of silence. the lukewarm response makes sense though.

1. No Words / No Thoughts // 5
2. Reeling the Liars In // 2
(not quite sure what they were thinking. this is swans at their most alt-country and I wish I never heard it.)
3. Jim // 3
(manages to set-up the ground work for the incredible tracks upcoming in their catalogue, but this feels even somewhat amateurish.)

1.1 Red Velvet Corridor // 5
1.2 I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull // 4
(no idea how it was even possible to create these sounds in the 90s.)

Swans - The Great Annihilator

Swans being the first time Swans-like. (whatever that may mean to you.).

this LP may miss the vastness of a Soundtracks for the Blind but it makes up for it for being consistently blood-rushing.

1. In // 4
(the change of atmosphere from White Light to this flashes me every time.)
2. I Am the Sun // 5
3. She Lives // 5
(what a monster.)
4. Celebrity Lifestyle // 4

Swans - Filth

To Be Kind is what Filth began to do. Raw, Gritty and exceptional sounds. Filth is a great debut album that is not even close of being amateurish. Just maybe repetitive.

2. Big Strong Boss // 4.5
(post-punk headbanger)
3. Blackout // 4-4.5

1. The Adults Are Talking // 5
2. Selfless // 4
3. Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus // 3.5-4
4. Bad Decisions // 4.5-5
(starts off way too familiar, even nostalgic and then builds up to something so much bigger. one of their best in my opinion)

There are two Nevermind listeners. One prefers In Utero and it is not even close for them. They don't really like Nevermind that much and think it is overrated.

The others think Nevermind is not only the best Nirvana album by a long shot, but it is also easily one of the best albums of all time.

It is, of course, a generalisation and not entirely true but I have been in both factions. I symphatize with both of them. After ignoring the praise, the talk, the critics, the audience - it ... read more
