Absolute fucking classic. One of my favourite songs ever.
An iconic, albeit simple, keyboard line introduces the song that elevates itself though Jarvis Cocker's sardonic lyricism. A snazzy pop tune with a ton of disco influence that touches in a very cheeky way the disconnect between different social classes through a really focused narrative.
The way the track builds itself for almost a minute with a performance by Cocker that finds him almost whispering at the beginning to explode into ... read more
One of my absolute favourite songs from the 90's. Joyful, but very reminiscent of an entirely different era, something enhanced by the nostalgic lyricism that, while longing for the past, still gives a hopeful look to the future.
Carefree and youthful, with a nice detailed imagery in it's lyrics, an amazing instrumental and performance and you've got one of the best Pulp songs ever.
I love this, holy shit. It's everything you want from a good Weezer song. Quirky lyrics that delved into a personal topic (though I'd argue, the song could have executed this a bit better), catchy melody and a great solo.
Can't wait for the album version to come out, as this version has kind of an abrupt ending thanks to the movie edit.
I loved it! Yes, the lyrics are quite corny, and it's a territory Weezer has explored many, many times in the past but Weezer's trademark nerdy charisma is present here too to save the track from being generic. The guitar heavy melody makes it stand apart from other Weezer tracks and the bridge is one of the best, more anthemic bridges the band has produced since their White self titled album.
I come back to it a ton, and it's arguably the best of the three singles by the hell mega tour ... read more
Haven't heard in a while, but i remember it being inspiring and downright amazing. It takes a more dramatic tone, but never falls into cheap melodrama. All around, a good song. Leaving this review to actually score it and re-review later.
Dunno what rating to give it, tbh. I definitely think it's overhated, but I wouldn't particularly go on record saying it's great. While I appreciate Beyoncés more subdued hook and Eminem's lyrical content, his performance, while genuine, feels extremely melodramatic which comes emotionally manipulative at times. I get what Em was trying to do, it just didn't sit well with me entirely and the last line on this song was pretty cringe, imo.
Still, I can see why people would like it, but ... read more
Not an amazing song, but still an amazing showcase of Em's abilities both technically and lyrically. Delivering his fastest flow yet through a fantastic performance aided by a great production and beat.
My issue with the track comes with some duds in the lyrics which bloat the song a ton and make it feel unfocused at times. The hook is also not one of Em's best, but it serves the track and its message really well. Lastly, the beat can take a while to sit with the listener, or so I've ... read more
Fucking classic since the second the beat starts. While i prefer the lead single to his second album, The Real Slim Shady, this track shares the same highly energetic, charismatic DNA that defined Shady in the earlier leg of his carreer.
This one does feel a ton more outdated in its production, but it still has a fantastic beat Em just rides through perfectly, showcasing his lyrical penchant for absurd, cartoony depictions of violence thru lyrical hoops.
I also love dancing to this shit. It ... read more
Funky ass beat, cartoony lyrics with a bombastic performance make it one of the most charismatic songs in his backlog. It's fun, bouncy and explosive and its lyrical content, while potentially offensive, contain this lyrical acrobatics that make this absurd scenarios even funnier and Shady's performance is devilish and full of personality.
i love dancing to this shit, it has a fantastic Dr. Dre produced beat that is just to die for. My only issue with the track is that it can be perceived as ... read more
One of my favourite songs ever, and what i genuinely believe to be one of the best narrative driven tracks of all time. It's haunting and depressing, but also strangely soothing and delicate, making it one of the most beautiful packages ever. The lyrical content is arguably the best Em ever wrote, with not a single bar wasted to craft this detailed narrative about an obsessed fan and everything that makes up his life, what he loves and what he struggles with, making you feel about him as a ... read more
Honestly, pretty terrible. MGK is not someone i'd call skilled in terms of lyricism and flow. It feels amateurish at best and he never rides the beat in a memorable way. I'd say the instrumental is pretty good, though i can do without the overly loud, distracting Ronny sample. A few of the shots he takes at Em could be argued, but he doesn't bring anything new to the the discussion or spins it to add his own personality or flavour, making it a pretty dry track with choppy flows and cringey, ... read more
Finding myself yet again confused by Kanye West, as this is the second song I listen to from him. It's got really great sample and some interesting instrumentation, but i feel that it doesn't go anywhere really interesting. The sample is well implemented, but can get grating after being repeated way too many times in a row.
The part this song is most known for is the lyric portion of the song, which just ties the track by making it seem Kanye was trolling all the way through. Would be ... read more
Song Machine by Gorillaz Review
It’s been a while since I was excited for a musical release, especially in this year where everything feels like it just stopped. Thankfully though, Gorillaz has delivered their quota by releasing monthly singles which not only have been great in quality, but also provide a sense of mystery and wonder, as you never knew what they would pull off or who they where going to bring for the next song. It was always highlight of the month, I remember many times ... read more
