“Psychodrama” Review:
By: Santan Dave
Praises: Dave makes his album debut with, by far, the best album of 2019, so far. Each of the 11 tracks are filled full of personal, braggadocios, and near depressing lyrics. The instrumentals are minimalist, which I believe perfect matches with the vocals. Most of the tracks on “Psychodrama” range from great to amazing. Furthering this I want to talk about the track 9 on the album “Lesley”. “Lesley” is ... read more
“thank u, next” Review:
By: Ariana Grande
Praises: Ariana produces a very personal, yet catchy pop album that isn’t afraid to be original. It takes all the qualities shown on “Sweetener,” and nearly improves on all of these qualities. Some of these tracks are some of the best that Ariana has ever produced with songs like “thank u, next” and “bloodline” being my personal favorites on the record. Pharrell does not return as lead producer on ... read more
Weezer (The White Album):
By: Weezer
Praises: Weezer produces some of the best songs the band’s ever made, in a slick, stylish pop-rock aesthetic. Every chorus is sharp and catchy. River’s sounds like he’s at his artistic peak on this record, even with being 46 at the time. River’s drumming sounds better than ever, the guitar work is amazing. Every song seems like it’s meant to be there without a single song of filler in sight. Overall, a really underrated and ... read more
Weezer (Teal Album) Review:
By: Weezer
Praises: Weezer produces a surprisingly enjoyable collection of covers of popular songs from the 70s’-00’. Most of the covers are faithful to its source material in one way or another. Furthermore, a hand full of covers on the record are surprisingly great, some I’d go as far as saying are better than the original. The song choices range from Hard Rock with “Paranoid” to even hip hop and R&B with “No Scrubs,” ... read more
‘Weezer (The Blue Album)” Review:
By: Weezer
Praises: I love the way that Weezer’s able to create fun/ energetic alt-rock tracks with songs like “Buddy Holly”. While also being able to make complex/ emotional tracks with songs like “Only In Dreams”. Speaking of the track “Only In Dreams”, it is by far my favorite track on the record. I could go far in as saying that it is one of my favorite closers to an album, of all time. The guitar ... read more
“Beatles For Sale” Review:
By: The Beatles
Praises: Paul McCartney’s vocal’s on the record are very much enjoyable. The Instrumentals on each song are okay-good. The production for the record is decent.
Critiques: Like many early Beatles records, this album suffers from “Daniel Caesar Syndrome” which is essentially making every single song you produce a love. The lyrics on these songs are cheesy to god awful, an example being “Baby’s In ... read more
Soy Pablo Review:
By: boy pablo
Score: 6.85/10
Praises: boy pablo once again shows that they can produce catchy sounding indie pop tunes. The guitar work is good. The mixing is great. Overall pretty catchy.
Critiques: The biggest problem that I have with this EP is the same problem I have with all of boy pablo’s music, in that it all sounds the same. Every song on this EP sounds nearly the exact same to one another, and got tiring very quickly. Nicolás’ style of writing ... read more
Make it Big Review:
By: Wham!
Score: 8.75/10
Praises: Wham! clearly shows with this record that they can make a meaningful/ catchy new wave album. They wear their influences on their sleeve. The instrumentals on each song are great, combing synths with jazz instruments such as saxophones. The way they combine genres of New Wave and Jazz together sounds amazing. Every song on this record is amazing, some I would go as far as saying that they’re the best pop tunes to come out of the ... read more
Some Rap Songs Review:
By: Earl Sweatshirt
Praises: Earl Sweatshirt comes back hard on an amazing abstract/ psychedelic hip-hop album. The album is his most personal work yet. The choice of making an album about his depression and him dealing with the death of his father earlier this year was a bold choice, but I personally think he pulled it off splendidly. The beats on the track are considerably more repetitive than from his previous work, and you would think that would be a negative, but ... read more
Violent Femmes Review:
Total Score: 5.6/10
Praises: Songs such as “Blister in the Sun” are catchy, fun, and just put a smile on your face while “Good Feeling” is a very peaceful song to listen to.
Critiques: This album isn’t that good. It has points in it that range from irritating to downright obnoxious. The elements of mixing Folk and Punk music sounds awful compared to bands like The Clash and The Jam, who were making records around this time. The song ... read more
Sheer Heart Attack Review:
Total Score: 8/10
Praises: Overall, Sheer Heart Attack is a great record. The way some songs on the record show great senses of braggadocio and bravado are exciting to say the least. While other songs on the record have a sense of peaceful sorrow. This record has some of, overall, my favorite Queen songs of all time (I.e “In the Lap of the Gods”, “Brighton Rock”, and “Stone Cold Crazy”), but it also has one of my least-favorite ... read more
Total Score: 8.5/10
Praises: Joy is an Act of Resistance is overall an excellent record. The way conveys points of homophobia within the lyrics are quite intelligently placed by lead vocalist Joe Talbot. The bass and drums throughout the record are crunchy as hell and the guitar tracks throughout the record are beautiful. The production overall is very symmetrical not having one instrument take complete control over the song.
Critiques: Joy overall suffers the same fate as many great records ... read more
The fourth studio album by house band Daft Punk, in essence, is a record just short of a masterpiece in nearly every regard. Daft Punk is ditching the raw club sound they were known for with albums like "Homework" and "Human After All" for more of a processed high-end dance club feel, and they convert their sound perfectly. The elements of electro-disco and synth funk shown on the record mesh perfectly. And the fact that they are able to make disco/house album that isn't ... read more
“MGMT” Self-titled Review:
By: MGMT
Praises: The pure ambition shown on this record is incredible. The lyrics on this record are some of the most cryptic Andrew VanWyngarden has ever written. The instrumentals on each song are great. The Lyrics, though cryptic, are still entertaining, catchy, and easy to sing to. Some of the songs records can be depressing, but others can be fun, an example being “Your Life is a Lie”. Which is, overall, a hilarious track.
Critiques: ... read more
The Voidz absolutely kill on an amazing sophomore record that combines elements of Art Rock, Noise Rock, and Hypnagogic Pop. Virtue is an improvement on Tyranny in nearly every way but does suffer from some flaws. Some songs do suffer from some repetitiveness and others miss the mark. But, most of the tracks on Virtue are amazing. The way that every song on the record sounds different, giving the record a great sense of individuality, and some of the ways that some song on the record reference ... read more
A good, yet flawed record that just misses the mark on multiple tracks on the record. It was a great sense of originality but suffers greatly from hints of repetitiveness/ redundancy, but "Human Sadness" is one of the greatest tracks to come out in 2014.
Favorite tracks: Human Sadness, Crunch Punch, M.utually A.ssured D.estruction.
Least-favorite track: Off to War.
