this song may seem pretty nonsensical and melody driven on surface level, but when you dig into twigs' metaphors and get used to her almost visual style of writing, you'll quickly transcribe this for the inner liberation anthem it is. that may not change the course of time per say, but it'll change how you look at her work at large for sure. drums of death is about social suicide and your life trying to get you back. in the meantime, you, or the character is too lost and busy ... read more
Remember "purposeful pop"? Yeah, now forget that, cause 143 by Katy Perry has no purpose at all, not even being mindless dance pop. there are 2 enjoyable moments on this album, totaling up to only 1 of the 34 minutes this nothing burger runs through. What's even sadder tho, is the fact that both have nothing to do with katy, they are doechi and jid's respective verses on their tracks. such a sophisticated and focused soft jazz, sophistipop masterpiece with lush vocals on top of classic jazz and a sprinkle of gospel with some synth pad infusion. the orchestra slightly getting more dominant on the last 4 tracks made the album a whole lot bigger sonically and elevated it from a 86 to a 96 in my book.
okay so, woah. this is still a jpegm record so of course, you expect what you expect. but fuck, the beat switching on track 2, the last 2 lofi-esque sample cuts, the twitter vulgar lyricism as always, the guitar riffs and the overall hard rock undertones .... this is not his best, thats still veteran, but this is his most realized. this is the most jpegmafia jpegmafia has ever jpegmqfia'd.
lively emo rock, something i've definitely missed :) favorites would be romance, desire, motorcycle boy, sundowner, and the absolute standout horseness is the whatness
melancholic in some corners, this cold but somehow intimate idm masterpiece deserves all its praise and more.
