if there are any baddies out there with the hands of a porcupine and the teeth of a raven hmu
Very cool follow-up record. I can't say I enjoyed it as much as their debut, as I greatly admired its noisy, frenetic danceability. Still this more subdued sophomore effort is an interesting development of their sound and I look forward to hearing what else they have in store.
I may update this with commentary on their live performance as I'll be seeing them soon.
Update: OH YEAH these guys FUCK live. They sound about the same live as on albums, which i found very impressive, but ... read more
So groovy and satisfyingly dissonant! Gonna see these mfrs live tonight I'm so excited!
Relistened to this recently with some friends just sitting on a hill. Everyone was quiet the whole time just listening, which doesn't happen much, and I think that says a lot about the music.
FIVEEE YEARRRSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Shit would be perfect if they didn’t close with The Overload, that song is so bad.
Yes. Good.

If Satan himself crept into my room at night and shoved my head intact down his gullet, allowing me to stay alive just long enough to feel my face be dissolved by his hellish stomach acids, I would have a second experience like this album.
I could tell you this album is dark, and abrasive, and terrifying, but nothing I could ever say would do this album justice. I am left utterly speechless as I try to describe the sound of this album... I think I'll just keep it as simple as possible.

This album is wonderfully cathartic
I can't say i've experienced much turmoil in the romantic department, but I don't think it's possible to listen to this album and not have empathy for Justin's experiences. Much like with my enjoyment of The Glow Pt. 2, love lost it is a human feeling that we can easily identify with.
First of all, the sound of this album is wonderful. Simple guitar chords paired with Justin Vernon's layered, and often autotune laced vocals, plus whatever ... read more
What an experience
It is extremely impressive that a work like this came out in the 70's, I would say it sounds ahead of its time, but it seems like this was a progenitor of any comparison I could make anyway. I would say the strongest trait of this album is the experience listening completely offers. When it finishes you really feel as though you have gone on a journey. It offers a testament as to why the album exists as an artform, both in its quality and general flow. The downside is that ... read more
An influential classic
This album was a lot of fun to listen to. With its signature quiet/loud dynamics and enigmatic lyricism, this album was both ahead of its time, and extremely influential. I would venture to say its influences are more significant than the album itself, with its reach enveloping much of the best and most significant '90s music. Of course, it would be foolish to discount it for that reason alone, and the album advocates for itself why it is so influential. One element of ... read more
It's good, except for Army of Me
First off, what the actual fuck is with the mixing on Army of Me! There is like a hiss, or a tone, or something under Björk's vocals that is absolutely fucking excruciating to me. It's really apparent in the chorus when she starts singing loud, I think it took a few listens to notice, but once I did, it ruined the entire song for me. Am I the only one who hears it? The mixing on the rest of the album is great, so why does this exist? Everything else about ... read more
