JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs
46

Sorry gang but what the actual fuck is this. It's just...not good. You can see the potential that he'd unleash in OFFLINE! and other stuff, but it's far worse than anything under the DeVon Hendryx name and any of his later projects. This is maybe worse than Black Ben Carson, even. I might just need to listen more, but it's just not great to me.

△$$₢△кк - 15 Auditory Interpretations of 15 1915 Paintings by Kazimir Malevich

Bullshit pretentious shitpost album. It's not funny and it's not good. Doesn't serve a purpose existing. It's literally a minute long. Biggest waste of a minute I've ever made the mistake of using up.

No favorite tracks my least favorite track was every one of them. Seriously. 15 songs and they're all 4 seconds.

Car Seat Headrest - Beach Life-In-Death
100

I don't often do single reviews, but...Beach Life-in-Death has changed my life. I think that the song says enough for itself, being an indie rock and storytelling masterpiece, but I just want to say thanks to music for being the reason why I'm still here today. You losers have to deal with me still because shit like this song helped me stay alive. I love music.

The ocean washed over your grave. The ocean washed open your grave.

The Weeknd - Trilogy
83

The addition of 'Til Dawn (Here Comes the Sun) works perfectly. That's my main comment about this. I was expecting this to feel more cohesive as an experience, and for the story to hit a little harder, but overall I'm impressed. I've already talked about the three parts to this project (which, in my opinion, are better enjoyed separately). The only reason that this is getting above an 8 is because it doesn't drag. I am astounded. It doesn't overstay its welcome, ... read more

The Weeknd - Echoes Of Silence
79

While Echoes of Silence is still an incredibly done album, I do find it to be the most forgettable out of the trilogy. It's not as well produced as House of Balloons, and it's not as ambitious as Thursday, and its influences are less clear. I do enjoy the noisier aspects to this, but it really just feels out of place in the Trilogy. While it does close it off well, I do think that Echoes of Silence reaches its full potential. The trip hop aspects are so cool. Abel's voice is ... read more

The Weeknd - Thursday
67

In theory, I should like this a lot more than House of Balloons. Darkwave is one of my favorite things on the planet, and I think that the post-punk and goth rock influences worked so, so brilliantly. At least, that's when they...actually worked. Whereas House of Balloons felt like it was a very fleshed out project, taking its time and expanding throughout every song, Thursday didn't feel like it really did that. It felt overly long, with the track lengths only detracting from the ... read more

I was an avid hater of The Weeknd for quite a while, believing the majority of his music to just be generic synthpop. While I still think that of his more recent music, House of Balloons is really something special. The production is really just gorgeous, and the album art is really conceptually cool and pulled off well. I love the ideas behind The Trilogy, and the lyrics don't really bother me.

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU: DIRECTOR'S CUT
75

This is yet another album I don't have much to say about. I don't like the bonus tracks as much as the originals, but I do think that the album does benefit from their addition. It feels like more of a complete experience than before. Other than that it's just a solid release from JPEGMAFIA.

Favorite tracks: don't rely on other men, i lay down my life for you, Boy You Should Know!, I'll Be Right There

Car Seat Headrest - How To Leave Town
100

This is my favorite album that Will Toledo has ever released. Car Seat Headrest is one of my favorite bands of all time, and this is my favorite electronic album from him. It seems like his new album will be going in this direction, and I’m…cautiously optimistic for it. Making a Door Less Open was quite a bit underwhelming, and I’m hoping that he can figure out how to write again. How to Leave Town creates a perfect atmosphere of just pure loneliness. From the repeated drums ... read more

Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
100

If not already obvious, I am a huge fan of psychedelic folk and ambient. This album to me is very reminiscent of songs by Adrianne Lenker, but just…a more atmospheric version. The lyrics that are actually intelligible here are gorgeous, but the main highlight of the album for me is the sound. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted from music in general. I love you Liz Harris.

Favorite tracks: Heavy Water / I’d Rather Be Sleeping, Invisible

Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix
100

If I had to pick an album to be called “post-rap” or “post-hip-hop,” I think this would be my choice. This is very possibly the most experimental album I’ve ever heard, and the grief shared through the album comes through strong. Dealing with the death of former Injury Reserve member Stepa Groggs, RiTchie and Parker Corey made this album to say goodbye. They have now retired the Injury Reserve name, and will continue to release music under ‘By Storm.’ I ... read more

Jordaan Mason - Divorce Lawyers I Shaved My Head
100

divorce lawyers i shaved my head is Jordaan Mason’s album with the horse museum, and…every song is just painful to hear. Their vocals are obviously very influenced by Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel, but the story here is different - divorce lawyers follows a married couple where both people are transgender, elaborating on feelings of intense dysphoria, derealization and depersonalization, and how it tears apart their relationship. This takes place in the fictional world created ... read more

Willy Rodriguez - wetdream
100

wetdream is an album that I’ve loved for nearly as long as I’ve been actively listening to music. I first heard it in January 2024, and fell in love with the noisy sound and painfully relatable lyrics. This album’s title track is my favorite song of all time and I do not expect that to change ever, in all honesty. revisited is one of, if not, the most painful song I’ve ever listened to, and all of the songs in between are honest and have some of the most gorgeous ... read more

Coaltar of the Deepers - No Thank You
51

This album has some of the best shoegaze songs I've ever heard. And it doesn't really have much else going for it. With such a huge range of genres, one would expect...more. I'd say this is a jack-of-all trades situation, but it's really a good-at-shoegaze-and-nothing-else situation. Really, it's just lackluster for the most part.

Favorite tracks: Good Morning, NO THANK YOU, Haru no gyouninzaka
Least favorites: 15 KNOTS, MEXICO (Ver. N), IT DAWNS BEFORE

2hollis - boy

I first went into this album expecting mediocre electropop, and was instead greeted with you once said my name for the first time. It's just gorgeous. I highly recommend it. The rest of the album was unfortunately, with the exception of crush, exactly what I was expecting. It's still well produced for the most part, and not a bad album by any means, I was just a little bit disappointed.

Favorite tracks: you once said my name for the first time, crush, promise

Callejera - GUTTING
76

I saw callejera live recently, and they’re one of the few hardcore punk bands that I’ve heard of to be able to capture the same energy that they have in their live shows in the studio. Mia’s vocals are awesome per usual and while the project was short, it still packed a punch. I’m looking forward to seeing them again, and hopefully soon. There aren’t many good local bands near me, so callejera is a huge breath of fresh air.

smokedope2016 - THE PEAK

Bro wasn’t kidding when he called it the peak. He was right. The hazy production adds to the vocals and the absolutely nothing lyrics don’t really detract from the overall feel of the project due to just how cool it sounds. Cloud rap is so awesome when done right and smokedope2016 definitely figured out how to do something cool with the sound. I’ll definitely be checking out his other stuff.

I have some massive review from RYM that I don't feel like putting here, but...yeah. I love this album. It's great emo rap, and I am in awe of the production most of the time. The horrorcore and witch house influences were amazing to hear, and I'm glad that Gao is getting the appreciation he deserves.

Deftones - Diamond Eyes
86

This is the culmination of everything I love about Deftones. The vocals are perfect, the instrumentals are loud and crashing and lyrically it isn’t bad. Doesn't reach the highs of their earlier stuff, but it's a lot more solid than most other alt-metal acts and definitely better than all of that nu-metal and metalcore shit. Most importantly, it’s the most consistently good Deftones project. Its highs rival Rosemary, Cherry Waves, and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) and its ... read more

Snow Strippers - The Snow Strippers

All of my problems with April Mixtape 2 were fixed with this. I’m such a huge fan of electroclash and witch house and this really just cemented that with loud electropop sounds and cool vocals and some of the best production I’ve ever heard. I had next to no problems with this entire project. It felt a little drawn out and sometimes a little samey, but since I love the sound anyways it’s not much of a problem. I was definitely not expecting to like this more than April Mixtape ... read more
