The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
80

Riding through my first listen of Underwater Moonlight was like riding a rollercoaster. I would really really enjoy a few songs in a row, and would every once in a while be greeted by a song that sounds like a hot pile of you know what.

But lets not focus on the negative and write about what I did enjoy from this record. The opening track, I Wanna Destroy You is a straight up, hands down, no questions asked, certified banger. The driving drum beat and bassline are addicting, and the screeching ... read more

Air - Moon Safari
70

Is this Psychedelic elevator music?
Is this a 1970's dramatic porno soundtrack?
Is this a band playing at a nude space bar in the year 50 ABY in the Star Wars universe?
Honestly, It could be any one of those things, and all of those things.

Moon Safari is my first introduction to AIR. Someone once told me about this album when we were talking about Portishead. They claimed that this AIR album was similar to Portishead. Sure, It sounds a little bit like Portishead, (how many times can I say ... read more

Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)

This album is an absolute gem of a find.
The music is so groovy, and enjoyable, I constantly just want to dance and move alone to what I'm hearing. I listened to it twice while playing golf this morning, and then again when I got home as I'm writing this review.

First off, The bassist went off on this album. He did not need to go as hard as he did. for the entire first listen, all I payed attention to was the bass lines, and the grooves he was creating. I also appreciate where the lead ... read more

Country Joe & The Fish - Electric Music for the Mind and Body
70

I'll keep this one short for my own sake. Unironically, I am high, and have been writing for over an hour. I just wanna chill. This has no connection to the album I am currently writing about. Seriously, It doesn't. k?

Electric Music for the Mind and Body is a bluesy, acid-rock journey, that was designed to be enjoyed and listened to while under the influence of probably either acid or shrooms.

Featuring Wobbly guitar melodies and hypnotizing drums, This record is sure to make you feel some ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
100

I imagine in 10 years, the lead singer will return to the band and they will do a reunion tour.
I will be at that show, middle of the crowd, and while the climax of "Chaos Space Marine" hits, every memory and every experience I have had for the past 10 years of listening to this album, will rush to me all at once. Shivers down the spine with a serotonin/adrenaline release. Crying tears of happiness, sadness, anger and every emotion I have ever sat with, through this album. feeling ... read more

Denzel Curry - Melt My Eyez See Your Future

Denzel Takes another step in another direction, and it just so happens to be wonderfully fantastical.

Ho99o9 - SKIN
70

A project that does not allow it's self to be categorized, even for a single song. These tracks are heavy hitting, beautiful, and impactful.
This is an album that will move this style of music on to bigger and better things.

Oliver Tree - Cowboy Tears
55

The writing is hilariously bad. On California and Cigarettes especially. The lyrics are sooo....Childish? impassionate? Idk man this is just really bad.

Hippo Campus - LP3
70

This is a bit of a disappointment for me. As a long time lover of Hippo Campus, and as someone who says that Bambi is a PERFECT album, this new release is a little bit of a kick in the stomach. Hippo Campus is capable of so much more than this.

Some of the songs here completely lack any artistic value and just sound like 5 Seconds Of Summer. Bambi had so many different ideas and emotions flowing through the whole record. This feels uninspired.

Some tracks are pretty great, like the opener 2 ... read more

alt-J - The Dream
80

Alt-j is one of my favorites so there is definitely bias here.
The album just came out and after my first listen, Im not disappointed at all, but I'm also not excited.
I think this is going to be a grower for sure.
It's not as jumpy and grand as their previous works.
More laid back, simpler feeling throughout.

I'm definitely going to try and remember to update this review soon. 80 for now

Yeat - Up 2 Më
70

Man oh man. I will admit, When I first listened to Yeat, I couldn't help but laugh. I thought It was so bad, and so obviously a Playboi Carti copy. I thought it was unoriginal and just trying to use the WLR hype to jump on the bandwagon of this potential new big sound in hip-hop.

But then I came back, and came back again, and kept coming back. Then I realized that I actually like this shit.
I stand by my opinion that this is just Yeat riding on WLR success, hoping the sound becomes ... read more

XXXTENTACION - vice city
99

Anyone commenting about the quality of the mixing, is being ignorant. Mans made this when he was like 14! It was his first song ever. And we still have the ability to listen and enjoy it today as raw and unmixed as it is.
Its an amazing song regardless if it was mixed well or not.
Only reason I don't have it as 100 is because I don't want it in my 100s list with all my 100 albums.

Cloakroom - Dissolution Wave
70

So here I am, browsing AOTY again looking for a new album or band to check out. I ended up clicking on this....
I saw Shoegaze, and Post-Hardcore as the genre tags. And it just so happens, that is the exact stuff I am really into right now.
That Foxtails album, combined with re-falling in love with The Smashing Pumpkins has spiraled me into another Post-Hardcore phase, and I'm excited for it. Oh and Ive also been getting into Cocteou Twins. So here I am, still having not heard the album, and ... read more

Houndmouth - Good For You
70

Man I really didn't think Houndmouth could come back from that disaster of an album they had in 2018. And after hearing the woman singer had left to do her own thing, I really lost all hope for this group.

They have completely proved me wrong, and I am happy they did. I'm sure they owe a lot of the credit of this album being so good to who produced and mixed it. Brad cook, and John Ashley from Waxahatchee and The War on Drugs. But overall I am glad they are back to making the sound they are ... read more

The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
80

Toooooo long for me, I get tired of the sound 65% of they way through..
There are some REALLY GREAT tracks here though! and I am always happy to listen to anything from the era of The Smashing Pumpkins.

foxtails - fawn

Hole lee ka mow lee, this blows my cock off. Is this........Art-Screamo? The drumming, the energy, the emotion, the SCREAMING. I cannot believe I have never heard of this band before. They are so talented! Each track has such a specific energy to it, and has so many twists and turns. Especially with the drumming! The drumming here makes this whole project have such a heavy math feeling to them. Dare I say some Midwest-Emo influence? I may do a more in-depth review for this, or I may just leave ... read more

Fickle Friends - Are We Gonna Be Alright?
65

I'm going to write this review as I am listening to the record for the very first time.
Currently I am on the 3rd track, and can say I was pulled in from the first track. The instrumentals are groovy, and can also be quite hard hitting. The vocal melodies have a pop feeling. I would even go as far to say the track "Write Me a Song" is a pop punk banger.

The track "Alone" is a very listener friendly track. The hand clap beat, the simplistic pop lyrics and easy to follow ... read more

FKA twigs - CAPRISONGS
85

My girlfriend and I listened to this for the first time together. Plugged into my dual 120 watt amps, laid in bed and just vibed to these songs. There was something interesting to talk about with every track that came on. There are so many different ideas with each song, and they go in such fun and interesting directions. You truly never know what you might hear next.

CAPRISONGS is a very enjoyable mix of R&B, Trap, HyperPop, Rap, and more. It is difficult to pin just one or two specific ... read more

AURORA - The Gods We Can Touch
80

One big goal for me coming into 2022 is to broaden my knowledge of music, and truly diversify everything I listen to. I want to become addicted to new genres and dive into new artists discogs that I've never listen to or even heard of.

When I saw this new AURORA record on the front page of AOTY, It grabbed my attention right away. So I took that as a sign to commit to listening to something TRULY new to me. Boy was I glad I did

This was my first time ever listening to anything by AURORA. I ... read more
