Rogue - Earth
75

A back-and-forth between Rogue’s uplifting melodies and his dynamic swagger. The former normally makes for stronger tracks, but the latter is very welcome in this project. Rogue’s 2013 hot streak continued in prime fashion with this project.

Favorite: Through the Dark
Least Favorite: Cataclysm

MUZZ - The Takeover
70

A significant step up from Muzzy’s other output up to this point. It also kicks off his penchant for longer-form musical storytelling, which he refines in future projects. It’s a little dated at times, but it cannot be understated as a precursor to many of the things I’ve come to know and love about his style.

Favorite: Timberwolf
Least Favorite: Draining Atlantic

Rameses B - Timeless
70

A great introduction to Rameses B’s style. He refined this style a lot over the following years, but this is still a great EP in its own right. “Timeless” is an especial highlight, with all its ear candies and dynamic progressions. But even the weaker tracks set such a nice atmosphere. A satisfying debut EP from Rameses B on Monstercat.

Favorite: Timeless
Least Favorite: Serenity

Mr FijiWiji - Friends
70

A really good collection of collab tracks that split the spotlight effectively between all parties involved. It also switches up the vibe in very cool and fitting ways. Solid, short, and sweet project from Fij.

Favorite: Sentient
Least Favorite: Voyager

PIXL - Sugar Rush
75

Track 1 is one of the greatest electro tracks of the time. Track 2 is such a great, clean melodic DnB track that carries quite a bit of energy. Track 3 isn’t anything crazy, but it’s a nice way to close out the EP. That’s a recipe for a supreme project for 2013 Monstercat.

Favorite: Sugar Rush
Least Favorite: Promises

Tut Tut Child - Impossible Things Before Breakfast
60

This is a phoned-in TTC project if I’ve ever heard one. The tracks are mostly alright, but it wastes its potential more than his previous or future projects. This EP really just exists, for better or for worse.

Favorite: Gravity
Least Favorite: Eye of the Storm

Falcon Funk - Falcon Funk
65

It had some interesting ideas here and there, but because it doesn’t go very far, it gets a weaker 65. Wish I had more to say about this one, since I am a glitch hop/funk EDM enjoyer.

Favorite: Leophant
Least Favorite: Bust

Graham Jones - Eyes Renewed
80

What a serene and refreshing album. Love the folky feel of it too, reminiscent of folkier Christian artists I’ve come to know and love. Graham’s nailed the musical atmosphere to fit his voice as well. Storytelling is also great, and no idea feels close to wasted. I’m impressed by this album and excited to hear what’s next for him!

Favorite: Come Harvest Time

Ryan Leahan - Forevermore I'll Always Exist
70

🔴 Heaven, Sacrilegious, cursed, 4 Life, cambodia
🟡 'til Dawn is Breaking, Let Go of the Light
🟢 The other 6 tracks

I have fun with these sorts of electropop projects. Ryan Leahan seems to have a good grasp on rich sound design and diverse creative direction. Although not every track scratches the itch, and not every track is supposed to, that affinity is on satisfying display here. The lyrics and even compositions can get a little cheesy at parts, but I'm a fan of the ... read more

CloudNone - LOST TAPES
70

CloudNone hits again! In what's almost like his version of Skrillex's FUS, CloudNone spans the sounds of his whole career, along with a new sound or two, with a lot of short and sweet tracks that serve together as a love letter to his years of great music. Although it has a bit of a slow start with the first three tracks and peeters out over the last three tracks, the meat in the middle is a real emotive and even fun ride. Name a CloudNone project, and you have a full track on this ... read more

William Black - The Shadow Realm

🔴 Goodbye, Empty Space (Without You Pt.2)
🟢 The other 10 tracks

On par with his last album, there's not much here that sticks out to me, and much of the project feels phoned in. It falls back on the same tired chord progressions and lyrical themes and meldub tropes that have been wrung out to death for years. But to be fair, they work for a reason. Relying on those things doesn't make for a great album, but it does make for an album that works alright. For that reason, I ... read more

EDEN - Dark

🔴 Paris, Teargas, True, Light Sleeper, (Cold Water freestyle), gggiiiiirrrrlllll, Quantuuuum
🟡 Still, TEAM
🟢 The other 5 tracks

A relatively consistent album that perplexes me a bit, but not in as much of an intriguing way as I'd expect. This being my first EDEN project, I was not surprised that there are several great ideas here reminiscent of other artists that I love. Often those stellar ideas are tucked in the background, and I think I'd enjoy the record more if those ... read more

Xeuphoria - Onsen
70

A straightforward ambient album that is very homogenous, but thankfully the styles it sticks to are effective and satisfying. The pads are soothing, and the simple toplines compliment that smooth atmosphere, along with the thematic foleys in the background. Not Xeuphoria’s craziest work, but it’s good for what it is.

Favorite: Onsen
Least Favorite: Sencha

Project 46 - Continuum
65

Some solid ideas that fall slightly flat in execution, but it’s still a nice listen that shows a couple different sides of Project 46’s style.

Favorite: Waiting
Least Favorite: Ekho

7 Minutes Dead - 7 Minutes Dead
75

Fun, complex, mysterious, full. The drops in this EP always hit for me and truly make the EP. There’s not a whole lot going on in most of the off-drop sections, but 7MD knows how to create a cool atmosphere and organize a dynamic EP.

🔴 Michael Squiers
🟢 The other 9 tracks

It took a couple listens for me to get into, but it’s a pretty fun entry. Definitely their weakest album in a while, but their last two albums set the bar very high. There’s a good bit of humor and musical value to be found here, even though several tracks sound either more nondescript or more straightforward than normal. Some interesting ideas that were fun to watch come together, especially in such a unique setting. It sneaks off a 70 ... read more

Virtual Riot - Stealing Fire (Remixes)

🔴 Stealing Fire (longstoryshort Remix), Nights On Fire (2024) (Skybreak HALF BLOOD Remix), Ridiculous (RANKZ Remix), Need / Get (Bossfight Remix), Dino Killer (Dodge & Fuski Remix)
🟢 The other 7 tracks

I wish I had more to say on this remix package other than it's a collection of remixes with slightly varying amounts of substance. Some of the remixes are nice, some of them are more nondescript, but few of them build on the Stealing Fire material in much of a satisfying way. As a ... read more

Tut Tut Child - We're All Mad Here

Not nearly as much personality as I’d like for a Tut Tut Child. The EP just doesn’t seem to do anything or go anywhere. He gets a lot better from here.

SIPPY - Scars In Stereo
60

🔴 Scars In Stereo, Like I'm High, F*kt Up
🟢 The other 7 tracks

A bit perplexing, this one. Opening with a spoken word piece that seems to intro a more personal, vulnerable project, SIPPY then rarely capitalizes on that vulnerability in the rest of the tracklist. The album goes some interesting directions, with a couple poppy tracks, a couple chill liquid dubstep tracks, and a few tracks in her classic style, but it rarely lands anywhere. I generally like SIPPY's style, but this ... read more

Atlas in Motion - Something’s got to give
70

🔴 Smile for once, Sofia, Dream interlude, What can I say?
🟢 The other 9 tracks

A solid album that shows great promise with its vocal melodies, ear candies, and explosive moments amidst the prominent calmer atmosphere. Mainly having listened to his funni work, it was cool to see how he'd approach a lyrically heavier, more serious project. Although the project didn't blow me away, it has quite a strong structure and flow to it, making for a nice, dynamic listening ... read more
