Completly inoffensive, but anyone thinking the Muse of old is back is just coping at this point.
I'm actually going to steal some of the wording from Blabbermouth.net for this:
"Sound-wise, Empty Hands picks up where Negative Spaces left off. Jordan Fish is back on production duties [...] Everything sounds tighter and more focused this time around."
Whilst Anne Erickson has framed this as a positive, I can't help but think that this has just caused more damage to the album. Compared the title track from this album to the title track from Poppy's 2021 EP ... read more
This album is genuinely pretty decent. It doesn't reinvent prog and it was pretty late to the progressive party, but there are some very good moments here making it worth a listen.
Highlights:
- Love Is Like Oxygen
- Fountain
This is the most inconsistent album I have heard from Poppy so far. Ranging from really good to just plain mid. Which actually makes it very difficult to rate. If you're exploring her discography, it probably worth a listen but it is definitely not a jump in point.
Country is generally not my thing so I've tried to approach this review more objectively than I usually would. First off, it's a good country album. It pushes no boundaries and plays it very safe, but the result is an an album that would struggle to offend any country fan. The underlying theme of this album seems to be "hopeful pessimism" and it delivers that message quite effectively. As someone who is not religious, some of the more emotive messaging me was lost to me and ... read more
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's 27th studio album, "Phantom Island", delivers yet another take on their sound, this time with a full orchestra. The album largely succeeds in feeling interesting and uses the new texture opportunities to create an atmosphere not typically found on a King Gizzard record. However, I do feel like the band missed here. Yes, the album is far from bad, hence my rating, but there are many times when the orchestra just ends up feeling like a ... read more
People who think this is anything accept extremely mid are injecting copium straight into their veins.
Well, the name of the album is correct, and if you like "I Disagree" standard edition, you'll like this too. I do wish that the additional tracks had been sequenced throughout the album rather than just lumped onto the end, as it just ends up sounding like an extra EP or something. But the extra songs do have something to offer so I'm not going to slate it too much.
Damn... I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did. As someone who first found Poppy from Negative Spaces, I'm slowly working my way backwards through their discography, and this is the best album I have heard from them yet. It's brutal, it's hyper, and it's chill - all rolled into one album. And I am totally here for it.
Highlights:
- BLOODMONEY
- Bite Your Teeth
- Don't Go Outside
Chill and fun. Whilst this album doesn't venture far in experimentation like Magdalena Bay's later releases, this EP helps showcase the beginnings of what makes this duo truly unique today. The production in this album is fantastic and coupled with Mica Tenenbaum's incredible vocals, it stands on its own in their discography as something worth paying attention to. Its accessibility might actually make it a decent jumping in point for those who want to listen to the rest of their ... read more
Rating this album is quite a special moment for me. This album, despite all its floors, was very important to me back in 2015. It was amongst the first collection of albums listened to that my Dad had never listened to. It was also the second album ever bought. As a teenager, it helped me create my own tastes and widen my horizons. With that said, it's not very good. There really are hints of brilliance in this album, both Coast Is Clear and Ease My Mind are genuinely brilliant. But the ... read more
This album is a strange one. Comprised mostly of music from different released tracks from across the band's back catalogue up to that point, December's Children has a wide range of quality. The highlights from this album like "As Tears Go By" and "Blue Turns to Grey" are absolutely brilliant and totally must listen songs but the lowlights of the two live tracks and the first track in the album kind of spoil it for me, and there isn't enough meat to the album ... read more
Ill Times (Deluxe Edition) was released 7 months after the original which was an album that I really loved. The new tracks are great but they do feel a little bit bolted onto the end. If they were better integrated into the album, it would be quite a seamless fit. Nevertheless, it's still a bloody fantastic album that deserves a listen.
Nah, Deadpool was right. Dubstep ain't dead.
I came to Zig after listening to Negative Spaces and, yeah, this isn't very good. There are moments in this album that do shine through but honestly, it's boring. The songs just do not capture my attention, the production is not good and the lyrical content is bland. If it was on in the background, it would hardly offend you but it would never at any point attract you either.
