This is some of the most fresh sounding music to have come out recently, and I love it. There is very little to really compare it to, it sounds almost otherworldly with how insanely innovative it is. Angine de Poitrine manages to make something both really easy to groove along to while still having so much depth and nuance in its sound that it can be studied extensively in terms of its technicality. There are just constantly some really nasty riffs thrown about like confetti, with some really ... read more
This album is really good. REALLY good. Even as someone who doesn't really love Indie Rock I can say that with my entire belief. It really took until the second half for things to click, but once it did, I understood. This album, despite being almost overly blunt in it's lyrics and messaging, manages to be extremely deep and evocative of so many strong emotions. Due to how blunt everything is, there isn't much for me to say in that section, as it really speaks for itself. ... read more
THANK YOU BANDCAMP #1
This is going to classify all the albums I learn about from Bandcamp's weekly New Music emails that they send out that I wouldn't have heard otherwise.
This is an incredible debut album, and it really puts Pipe Bomb's passion about their craft out in a really powerful way. You can tell that there are so many different subgenres that influenced it to the point where it is hard to list. There are some really cool rhythms and riffs presented throughout with ... read more
This is genuinely like 4 songs long and they just split some of them up into 3 audio files!!!! It still goes absolutely crazy though, and it really isn't to the detriment of the album at all. It immediately opens up with some unbelievably over-the-top energy, and really just carries that throughout. It will occasionally settle into a groove for like 20 seconds in some of the "longer" songs, but then it goes straight back into some of the most raw energy ever put out. Really feels ... read more
First foray into Grindcore, and I have to say, this is a really interesting genre. In general it's a lot of short bursts of unbelievable intensity, but this album really mixes that intense burst with some really cool, sludgier riffs, especially in the last track, and I think that really works to the album's favor. Having that mix helps not only heighten the shorter songs' energy, but also add in some variation that I think a genre like this really needs if it wants to venture ... read more
Pretty dope EP! Really interesting sound I haven't really heard before, it's Djent without the distortion, with some pretty dope flows and rhythms over it, and they work together pretty well! Ando San is able to incorporate all these elements quite well, although I do think the mixing could use some work, as it gets a bit muddy overall. Shows a great display of potential, and I hope he's able to continue with this sound and evolve a bit to really perfect it.
This album is somewhat legendary to me, as I have only listen through it one time and dreaded coming back to it ever since. I heard it with Aubrey for the first time, and it became a legend of sorts that we would come back to it on the one year anniversary of our first listen. With her passing, I found it was only right to stay true to this.
This album is BAD. No other way to put it. There is some ironic enjoyment to get out of it, but that doesn't save it. Not even close. For the most ... read more
This album is so unapologetically Southern in a way that is unlike any other hip-hop album I've ever heard, and I love it. The funk-based production serves as a major part of this, but Andre 3k and Big Boi's flows, lyrics, and delivery are just as vital of a contribution. It really feels like a hazy swamp because of just how laid back and funky it is. This album is also filled with some really long tracks, with each song averaging around 4 and a half minutes if we aren't counting ... read more
This is quite possibly the most underrated album in Danny Brown's discography, as I rarely see anybody ever talk about it, and it is INCREDIBLE. The weird abstract and psychedelic mix on here is something I have never really heard in hip-hop, and this does it really incredibly. I absolutely love its use of vocal samples sparingly, often being small flourishes or ambient noise, and that definitely contributes to why I enjoy this so much. There's also quite a bit of variation in both ... read more
DENZEL CURRY DROPPED AND IT WAS HEAT AS ALWAYS!! This, while being similar to something like KOTMS, takes the Southern Trap sound back to it's roots for a bit, before modernizing it in the second half. I really like the more old-school first half more than the second half, but they're both quite good and have plenty of bangers. The transitions between tracks are smooth, and almost everyone fits perfectly on the songs they are on. I say almost simply because MUTT THAT BIH's ... read more
Thanks for the rec, @LuckyNS!
This was a recommendation from one of my friends who's known Tobias for a long while, so it's quite cool to see something like this that was released by "just another guy." For one, this mixing and production is really high quality for being an indie project, and the soundscapes throughout are fairly interesting. It is VERY reminiscent of I Didn't Mean to Haunt You, which makes sense as I was told that was a major inspiration for the ... read more
Coming back a week later, and this album has grown on me a LOT. This not only has some of his biggest bangers AND his most introspective writing, it shows his insane range and personal growth since The Melodic Blue. Although on my first few listens I thought songs like Birds & the Bees, Good Flirts, and $ex Appeal didn't really fit or were "duds", but they've grown on me a lot. One of my favorite things about Keem is that he lets himself be silly and fun sometimes, which ... read more
(I am rating the Extended version as I believe that it is the better version, along with being the main one available on spotify)
This is a masterpiece, no way around it. JID is one of the best rappers out right now, which is proven by just how consistently great he is. He can flow like crazy and still keep songs focused on a topic and idea, which very few people are able to do. The production on here is great, and it provides a great base for JID to do his thing on. He even gets in his ... read more
In my excitement for the new Baby Keem album, I wanted to go back and relisten + review The Melodic Blue, as it's an album I actually like a lot. Keem is one of the best modern-day rappers, both when it comes to producing and actually rapping, which his unique voice works really well for. He showcases a lot of catchiness on here, with a lot of melodies and verses that will get stuck in your head. It's opener and two closing songs are definively the high points, but there are some ... read more
gnx is Kendrick's latest release, following the beef, and it carries a lot of energy from that despite having started production a year prior. There are some really good hits on here that are extremely danceable, and those mingled with some more heartfelt and conceptual stuff is really cool, creating one of his most diverse single-album experiences. Despite this, I find it to be his weakest record by far. This is not really the type of music I want to hear Kendrick make, even though it ... read more
I love mathcore and experimentation, so I went into this expecting to love it. And guess what? I did! The amount of genre and idea melding here is genuinely psychopathic, and the fact it all works is even more crazy. Everything throughout this album all work together tonally despite the fact that the sound of this is all over the place. The vocalist has such a unique voice that works really fucking well here, along with conjuring up a very specific visual of what he looks like (even though that ... read more
The most ostracized album of TOOL's discography, Fear Inoculum is an interesting one. I find it to be very overhated, and I think it really stands toe to toe with everything else they've made. Despite the fact you can tell that they are much older now, Maynard sounds better than ever and the instrumentals are just as good as they were before. A lot of this is also a slight change in their sound, opting for something a bit heavier than usual, with a lot more polyrhythm work and a ... read more
Before going into this, I had not heard a single song off this album, which I think was a good thing. For both Aenima and Lateralus I had heard a few tracks already, but going in entirely blind to an album like this greatly changed how I perceived it at first. To start, some of the guitar tones displayed on here are unlike anything else I've ever really heard, specifically on Jambi. They've always had their unique sound, but it feels like they were experimenting with it a bit here ... read more
After listening to more music, deciding to return to Lateralus was a real treat. This feels like a much more honed in version of Aenima, not necessarily improving on it's sound but focusing it more on a single point, along with more refined production, for better or worse. Ultimately, I find this to be more enjoyable than Aenima due to this, even though I also love this album. As someone who really likes weird time signatures and sounds, this really feels almost designed for me to love it, ... read more
Peggy's most refined work, ILDMLFY is yet another great release from him. He really subverts almost everything he's done before on this album, while still keeping true to some of what he was doing earlier on in his career. He clearly takes a lot of inspiration from AMHAC for this and pushes the Rock elements he was experimenting with there to the forefront, really creating a unique mix of that along with his signature glitchy and experimental production. Although this is his most ... read more
