My Parents Have Influenced My Music Taste Too Much (MPHIMMTTM™) #2
I asked my mom to give me some albums to listen to that she really liked, and this is one of said albums. When listening through, one thing jumped out at me immediately: the mixing. It isn't ever consistent from one track to the next, it's way too quiet, and the voice NEEDS to be more prominent. Despite this one quite glaring issue, I liked a lot of the ideas brought forth here. The mixture of thrash metal with ... read more
My Parents Have Influenced My Music Taste Too Much (MPHIMMTTM™) #1
I grew up with a lot of tracks from this group, and this album specifically, everywhere, from road trips to around the house and every place in between. I have to say, this is a pretty great album to grow up hearing. I frankly had no clue just how much of this album I've passively heard until I listened to it in whole and I recognized nearly every single track. This project is just so fun, and has really good ... read more
This is another pretty incredible release from Gojira, further showing their insane consistiency in quality and skill during this era. Although there were a few moments on here that were a lot simpler than some of their other projects, it contrasted those with some of their weirdest tones and effects, along with some wacky guitar riffs occasionally. This led to a really solid balance on here of both sounds. They also mix their typical heavy sound with some slightly cleaner tones and moments on ... read more
I wanted to listen to something different again, so I decided to finally check out Bjork's debut project! This is such an impressive LP for being her "first". She has such a unique voice and way of expressing her thoughts, and it's really lovely. I had no clue what to expect from this, but it was surprisingly lush sounding, with a lot of sounds going on often, while also being able to draw back to some really simple instruments when the time is right. Speaking of the ... read more
Went into this not really knowing what to expect from the genre tags, and I was fairly surprised by this. A lot of this is barely reminiscent of metal at all, despite the fact that you can tell under a lot of the weird sounds there was a guitar being played. I personally found that part of it really cool, and the weird electronic stuff reminded me of death grips at a few points with how strange they were. The operatic baroque stuff works pretty well and helps keep the album together ... read more
Hearing a few bits and pieces of it here and there, I wanted to try and listen to a full Bluegrass project. Although this was somewhat of a letdown for "pure" bluegrass, it still was able to be really enjoyable. This cover really displays exactly what I should've expected more of: a modernized folksy experience. The instrumental tracks were all great, and really showed off more of the bluegrass style that I was hoping for, and I do wish they had incorporated that sound more into ... read more
Really fun little project! There's a lot to like about this, and the throwback sound of it is really cool. There were a couple moments I was getting some Gorillaz self titled vibes, which was really cool to hear something similar to that again. Although there were a few tracks that were weaker than the rest, this overall does a great job of showing colon3's ability to make almost any type of music, following up their previous project with something a lot more in the hip-hop vein. Fun ... read more
This was the only album I would ever listen to for 2 years, before I ever got into any other genres or types of music. Sure I would hear something new here or there, or stuff played in the car by my parents, but no full albums or anything I would really pay attention to. It's oddly nostalgic for me because of this, and coming back to it with my current perspective is honestly really weird. This is such a relic of my past self to me in so many ways, so it's almost a bittersweet ... read more
I went into this not knowing what to expect, and I left not knowing what I had just listened to. Tomorrow We Escape, and I assume Ho99o9 in general, is impossible to pin down as one thing. The sound is comparable to so much, and yet isn't a genre I can define as something that already exists. This is clearly a very experimental project, and a lot of crazy and weird stuff is done on here, to variable levels of success to me. I'm sure that this'll grow on me with more listens, but ... read more
This is Pantera's most underrated album. This feels like the most experimental, weird, and wonky that this group has ever gotten in so many ways, and I love every part of that. There are a lot of moments on here where the guitars do some stuff that I've never heard anything even similar done before, even on their other albums. Despite maybe not being quite as consistient as some of their other albums, this has some of my favorite tracks and moments on it from the whole band, with ... read more
This is quite an album. The sound here is really unique, with some really interesting stuff done that I haven't heard before in metal. The mix of calmer parts with the super intense thall was really cool, and the actual guitarwork itself had some moments unlike anything else I've heard. The drums sound great both playing-wise and tone-wise, they're really punchy and help keep everything sounding as intense as it does. The use of synths and other instruments throughout also really ... read more
This EP came out the day I was born, which is sick as hell. This is my first time listening to a full "pirate metal" project, which I'd interacted with a couple songs before, but just hadn't gotten around to it until now. Honestly, this was a really fun time! The inclusions of accordion and horn sounds work really well here, and it manages to create and keep the pirate theme really solid throughout the 18 minute runtime. There are some really cool guitar screeches ... read more
For being released 30 years after their debut project, this is an insanely impressive album. This is the first shoegaze + metal album that I've heard that didn't have this darker sound that most other metalgaze has, so it was something really cool and unique. A lot about this project sets it apart from most metal; from the constant use of weird and experimental sounds, to the really unique delivery, to the range of tones in the guitar, it really has a lot going for it that most other ... read more
This was a lot better than I was expecting it to be! There are a lot of really incredible tracks, and the album doesn't really falter that much to me. As someone who really likes groove metal, hearing this slightly thicker and boggier sound was really cool, along with this project being more intense sonically than the other Slipknot albums I've heard. The drums on here are some of my favorite from the tone alone, with the kick being really powerful; the other instruments also have a ... read more
Paris Texas' debut album is a really solid outing from them. Although i was fairly underwhelmed with the first group of tracks (aside from Sean-Jared which was awesome), the rest of the project really picked it up. There's some really good deliveries on here, and they still have a lot of aura in how confident and unique they are. The production throughout is really experimental, more so than their other projects, to varying levels of success; their experiments do pay off most of the ... read more
This is so hype, really feels like some classic thrash metal that somehow just resurfaced recently. The guitars and drums really hit hard, and they both really showcase some really good skill and speed with their playing ability. The distortion on the guitar is really great, and the overall tone is really clean. Although the vocals can be a bit hard to understand at a few moments, they sound really good with everything else here, and fit with the rest of the sounds well. Everything about this ... read more
This is another really incredible album from Death. Although I still don't like the vocal delivery of the group on this project, it's definitely grown on me since their last project. The guitar work and tone here is some really cool stuff, and still holds up as some of the highest-quality death metal to release even 30 years later. Despite how good the drumming on here is, I do feel like the kick throughout needs a bit more punch to it, as it's audible but doesn't really ... read more
I found this to be a pretty enjoyable album! I really liked the way the guitar was being played with all the harsh cutoffs, and I think that technique was used really well here; the fact it wasn't constant also helped make it not feel too repetitive in that sound. The amount of vocal range on here is also really cool, and the amount of layering of both voices and other sound clips throughout is pretty sick. I do think one or two of the voices done throughout are pretty annoying though, ... read more
So extremely raw and real. Getting a glimpse into the mental state of someone at a genuine rock bottom, it puts exactly the raw and genuine lack of energy and care one has at that moment into audio form. The overall insanity and messiness with the low energy displayed here is something really haunting and depressing, and really feels like it puts you in his shoes as someone who was in the worst state one could be in. Everything on here is creepily haunting, and it really feels like you are just ... read more
ok this is actually pretty good, i was kinda going crazy here. mixing is a bit loud overall, yet everything still sounds separate and distinct. Honestly like i fw the sound of it a lot still; Pretty blatant inspiration but not bad at all, still really proud this.
