Playboi Carti - Playboi Carti
40

Bro has somehow always been carried by his producers and features that's crazy!!!! Every solo song here is 80% chorus and 20% fine at best rapping. Magnolia works for that formula, but it is wayy too repetitive to fill up 45+ minutes. One thing I will say is that Carti is good at adlibs, honestly best displayed on Magnolia, but those are what really made his otherwise very empty rapping bearable, along with the pretty good production. The two highlights are clearly Magnolia and New Choppa, ... read more

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
80

This leaned much more hardcore than I thought, but that isn't a bad thing. This guitar tone is so crunchy that you can barely tell what note is playing, with the breakdowns being so spewn throughout making it feel super sludgy. I really like how everything here flows together super well, with multiple songs being almost continuations of each other. The closer also does its job well in finishing everything off, which I really appreciate an album doing. Really well made album, made me want ... read more

TELEFUZZ - TELEFUZZ, VOL. 1
80

I first came across this scrolling through recent albums on here, and thought it seemed pretty cool, but initially passed on it. I only came back to listen because I saw someone promoting this in the replies of a hit tweet of all places and took that as a sign to go back and check it out. This was honestly quite good, and very fitting for the name. There are so many samples here that come through and are extremely recognizable mixed with this glitchy E/IDM production mix really gives the vibe ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

Not quite as timeless as To Pimp A Butterfly, but still a masterpiece in its own right.

Enterprise Earth - Descent Into Madness
75

I've had this in my list for a WHILE simply because the cover is really fucking awesome, and just now got around to it. For some reason, Deathcore has had some of the coolest album covers in Metal, regardless of the music quality. As someone who doesn't particularly LOVE this subgenre, I did quite like this! The shorter format for Deathcore really contributes well to any releases in the genre, as at a certain point it all starts to blend together unless it's mixed heavily with ... read more

Thank You Francium!!

TURNED THEIR DAMN MIC UP LFG πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯
Around a year ago, I first came across Francium when looking for something interesting to listen to, and came across "Still nothing", which was a pretty damn good mixtape that was held back by a few aspects that I didn't like and wasn't used to. My biggest gripe was the fact their vocals were so damn quiet, when they had a really good delivery and voice that really deserved a bit more of a spotlight. ... read more

Angine de Poitrine - Vol.II

They got even more fun.
I, like nearly everyone else, found out about this guys in my youtube recommended, albeit a bit later than many others, and I immediately loved what they were doing. This release really takes the groove of the first one while expanding into more experimental sounds with their guitars and pedals, pushing their playing closer and closer to the full extent of their abilities. There is a ton of layering with multiple rhythms going at once on top of each other, yet they all ... read more

TOOL - Opiate
80

TOOL is a band that has always been good. The mixing on here is much better than I'd expected, especially with it being their first release, with even the live tracks sounding great. Their playing is in it's infancy in this stage, yet is still showing many signs of what they will go on to be in the future, with very similar lyrics and delivery to the albums yet to come. There are also slivers of more progressive-sounding metal leading up to the title track, which is really the most ... read more

TOOL - Undertow
90

I don't get people who say that this is the "least TOOL" TOOL album. To me this is very clearly a direct view of their skills, with similar lyricism, tone, and overall sound to their following releases. This not having progressive metal as a main tag is crazy; either this should get it or Aenima shouldn't have it, as they both have very similar displays of the style. The only real difference from this and the rest of their discography is how young Maynard sounds as the ... read more

Pawcord - STEREOTYPICAL MUSIC 4 U
50

There is clearly a really good knowledge of what makes music "good" on here, with some of the production being actually really good and having some cool stuff going on! Unfortunately a few of these tracks are damaged by the lyrics, with the pent-up-pup-esque lines that make it very corny. This type of bluntness on the topic of sex and kinks has never worked for me. I also feel like the artist could work on their delivery a bit, with some of the vocals being a bit abrasive against the ... read more

JID - DiCaprio 2
85

Just a really solid collection of tracks from JID, not much else to say. Mostly good production, some really impressive rapping, and a preview of his versatility that really shines on the following album. Pushes his flows and lyrics further than he went on The Never Story, while sacrificing a bit of cohesion. Good experience overall, with a lot to love.

Ruby My Dear - Iterations
85

Such an interesting sound. I found this scrolling through the "new this week" tab here, thought I'd check out a few moments to see if it was worth committing to, and was immediately enamored. There is a surprising amount of range here, with it all still sounding extremely cohesive in its tone. The first three tracks are off-the-walls insane, then the 2nd to last track chills that down a bit to lead into the closer. There are some really cool sounds brought forth on here, with a ... read more

Denzel Curry - ZUU
80

This is to 2019 what Imperial was to 2016: that is, a signifier of music for that year. In the same way that Imperial sounds like it is stuck in 2016, this sounds like it is stuck in 2019, but that isn't really a bad thing in either case. This is just a bunch of hard ass music, with a few standouts that go above and beyond. The final few tracks are the best ones, aside from Ricky at the start being one of Denzel's best songs overall. I think that SHAKE 88 is one of his most underrated ... read more

Balu Brigada - Portal

Thanks @LuckyNS for the suggestion!

I am currently on a road trip, and I'd say that is the perfect environment to listen to this in, maybe even increasing my score just from the experience of listening to it in the car. This album is so upbeat and exciting, and matches the long drive vibe perfectly. There is definitely some Glass Animals DNA in here, with some really cool synth work mixed with these slightly overdriven guitars to create a relatively unique sound in terms of modern pop ... read more

Hellripper - Coronach
85

I would be stupid to not mention the album cover, which is stunningly gorgeous, and the music is there to match. Its a bit melodic, a bit thrashy, a bit dark, and even a bit folky at times. I really like how Hellripper was able to meld these genres into one and pull it off with this much quality. I really enjoy the range of guitar tone depending on the mood, especially when they bring in that acoustic/clean tone for a more chill moment. Segments like that contrast the speed shown throughout ... read more

Neurosis - An Undying Love for a Burning World

PLEASE READ TO SEE WHY I SCORED SO LOW!

So, I've been meaning to check these guys out for a while because of how incredible TSiB is, and I figured with this being considered one of the best things of the year so far, it'd finally be the perfect time to do so. What I have discovered is that I am not all too fond of Atmosludge very much, which is a bit unfortunate. I really wanted to love this album, but I didn't really jive with it all too much. I can really see and appreciate ... read more

Car Bomb - Mordial
80

Car Bomb is one of the most strange metal bands ever, and with one listen you will immediately understand why. I listened to their EP that came out last year and was absolutely enamored by it, as I had truly heard nothing like it before, so I knew I wanted to listen to a full album of theirs soon. This really keeps the same sound as their EP had, or I guess it's the other way around, but this is still just jam-packed full of these crazy mind-bending riffs and instrumental parts unlike ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
80

DAMN. is Kendrick Lamar's fourth studio album, and it is my least favorite from his TDE era. There are some really great elements throughout, but it comes off as rather of-its-time, unlike his other projects. It has a lot of things referring back to TPAB and its reception of it from the right-wing party, along with trying to address Donald Trump's first presidency. He does these things quite well, but they are a major contributing factor to why it feels stuck in time. The production ... read more

Converge - Love Is Not Enough
70

I'd seen some mixed reviews from some people I follow on here, so I thought it would be worth checking out myself to see what the reason for that was. This album cover, while pretty good, looks like it would sound really commercial, which it luckily didn't all too much. It definitely is more "mainstream" than most of the stuff I enjoy, with the sound of everything being very clean, which isn't my favorite sound for this type of music. Honestly, some of my negatives are ... read more

The Fencesitters - Picture Day
80

This album art is really beautiful, and is initially what drew me in, and the actual music did not disappoint. Although I'm not too good at actually analyzing Indie Rock albums like this, I will do my best. I think that the actual tracks sound pretty great, I really like the instrumentation and variation. The 37 minute runtime also makes it fairly approachable, without overstaying its welcome. You can tell that this band is very passionate about their music, and it shows off their skill ... read more
