This is a really great debut album. I haven't really heard anything else that sounds quite like this, and it's awesome how doefriends has already found their own unique sound. I do feel like there is a lot of room to grow from here, but this is an absolutely incredible first release. I think the vocals are great and fit the environment really well, and the bitcrushing helps it out quite a bit to me. I do feel like there could be some more variation, but it's still a great project ... read more
Pantera's "first" album is a really great project, and it is one of the best starting points for a band like this. Although this isn't their best album, it's still filled with some genuinely incredible tracks, and you can definitely see how they can and will move forward with this sound. This is the most melodic that Pantera has been (disregarding the glam era), which makes it really interesting in contrast with the rest of their future projects. Although I do think ... read more
You COULD NOT MAKE ME HATE this album because of how funny it is. Like what do you mean you intentionally made the most generic and stereotypical country music to the point it's so cliche its funny, THEN WHEN YOU REBEL YOU MAKE THE MOST GENERIC AND CLICHE ROCK MUSIC???? The whole concept of this album has some legs to stand on theoretically, but it's so terrible in it's execution that it just ends up being hilarious. He doesn't even fully commit to the rock sound either, it ... read more
I love this album. The same year that Kendrick dropped his super introspective album based on growth, Denzel dropped his own masterpiece that did something similar for him. This is probably my favorite produced album ever, every single song is so well made and is distinguishable from each other while all fitting together perfectly. Denzel's rapping and lyricism is also at it's peak here, and his mixture of bluntness and metaphors throughout is so well done. His range of delivery on ... read more
This is the best extended edition / deluxe ever. These songs all work so well with the live instrument beats and almost sound like that was how they were originally intended. The two new songs are also incredible and work so well with the rest that if you were told that they were part of the original tracklist, most people who haven't heard it wouldn't know any better. Incredible addition to an already amazing album. (rating + review here only for the deluxe songs, but in terms of my ... read more
Fantano's review has to have had a negative effect on this album's reception, because it's genuinely awesome. As I expected going in, this sounds nothing like any other Death Grips album. The amount they fuck with MC Ride's voice on here is so cool and different, and it helps this stand out the most in their entire catalogue. I also absolutely LOVE the amount of sounds going on here, it feels like there's always an entirely unpredictable element coming in at every turn. ... read more
Lowkey stealing from the tags, but this album is so lush-sounding. It's so flowery and joyful, and does a good job of keeping itself interesting for how old it is. Although it doesn't sound QUITE as big or full of sounds as it did when it first came out, there was still a lot going on at any given moment, which is really impressive for the time. I honestly was surprised by just how good this cover was, as it really feels exactly like what is happening in the album; just hanging out ... read more
I don't even know what to say. This is an extremely impressive record; it's rooted in this piano but brings in so many other sounds throughout and it's honestly amazing. The songwriting is so raw and emotionally charged, and it's delivered in such a good and unique way that really blows me away. It manages to do all this while still being extremely focused in scope, with little to no extraneous parts, which is admirable. This album really speaks for itself, and is entirely ... read more
This is a time capsule of an album. It's so rooted in this 2016 sound, and it still holds up fairly well as a piece of time. There's some genuinely great songs on here and some pretty interesting trap beats throughout; it manages to set itself apart from other albums that sound like this, making it still interesting despite it's age and the era it came from. Denzel has definitely improved, but this is still a good listen to see where he came from and how much he has improved.
This is a really cool idea for a project, done very well. The DG samples end up coming across really well and it comes together in a really great way for the most part. The Takyon part is the most well known for a good reason though; it is the standout part of the project, nothing else here quite reaches the high of that (but the part right after comes pretty close). I like the repetition of the interview part, and it really is what makes this such a good project. Although I didn't love ... read more
Nobody is doing it quite like SKOTSKR. This album shows off his insane range, from some insane noise tracks to more comprehensible tracks, akin to Uneased & Ignored; with how large his sound spans, it all sounds really unique and like nothing else I've ever heard, which is so cool to me. I absolutely love the sounds throughout here like always, and I really like the way it all flows together despite how different everything is within his sound. The second half of this project has some ... read more
This is the album that made me realize how truly awesome metal can be. Even though I've definitely heard better since my first listen, I still really enjoy this album and appreciate it a lot. The experimentation done here is really cool, and I still am really fond of the vocals. The range shown throughout is really impressive and unique, there isn't much out there with this style and this quality. There are some insane riffs and drum parts on nearly every song here, and I'm super ... read more
Am I going insane??? I was enticed to listen to this because of the insane difference between critic and user scores, which is bafflingly large. I tried to see the best in this album, but this is some of the most boring, fake-deep shit ever. Nothing really particularly sounds awful, but it felt absurdly boring for what it is. The mix between more classical sounds and edm sounds is really weird and doesn't work in any sense on here; it feels like she flipped a coin on each track to decide ... read more
This is the peak of modern white people music. The writing, albeit corny at times, works extremely well, and his delivery was genuinely great. I also LOVE the production, and the amount of sounds coming in throughout (especially on the first song) reminded me a lot of the first Gorillaz project in a way. This is definitely a high-quality album worth listening to, especially considering the range of sounds and things done on here.
Maybe the most on-the-nose and silly name in retrospect, but it birthed a whole genre, and oh my GOD is this a strong first album for doing that. This would be like if Illmatic was the first boom-bap album of all time. It like it perfectly displays exactly what Epic Doom Metal should be; it's so grand and encompassing and ambitious, while somehow hitting all the marks it attempts to hit. Even disregarding that aspect, everything here sounds genuinely so great, with it's really heavy ... read more
This is an honestly really solid pop record! As someone who has stopped hearing a lot of more popular music and finding my niches, it's kinda refreshing to hear something like this. Without hearing these types of songs being super overplayed, they feel a lot nicer to listen to. The production throughout is really catchy and well made, and Sabrina's voice works really well over it. I do feel like a lot of these songs are "good", but not much more than that; despite this, I ... read more
Although I do think that this project was a bit bloated, there was a lot of cool stuff here. I love the intensity and general sound, and the vocalist does a really good job over these arrangements; the range of delivery throughout is quite impressive, even though it is mostly copying what Pantera does. I do feel like the guitar tone is a little bit muddy and could be made clearer, but there are some parts where it sounds great (especially the solos), and it works well when all the other ... read more
This is honestly not a bad project, I was pleasantly surprised! It's not something I would personally listen to in my free time, but there was a lot more good on here than I expected. The first song is genuinely like great, and the production overall is pretty good for the genre; the last song is genuinely one of the worst produced AJR songs I've heard though, especially with that sample. The writing overall is an improvement over the rest of their music (although I really don't ... read more
Going into this, i expected a fully intrumental project that was trying to emulate N64 era stuff, and that was a big part of this. What i did not expect was everything else; this project has honestly a lot going for it, mixing that nostalgia sound and vibe with some more almost indie rock and pop-esque intrumentals and vocals. These worked surprisingly well together, and made for a great overall listening experience. There are some really beautiful tracks throughout, and no moment ever really ... read more
this is the person who made that "woke up with a boner" song which im guessing is how a lot of people found out about them, so I wanted to check out their other work. I thought this was honestly surprisingly good! I had practically no idea of what this would sound like, and it ended up being a mix of quite a bit of stuff; there was some straight up electronic music, rock, vgm, and some weird experimental shit that i really liked. You can definitely see some of their inspirations shine ... read more
