definitely an awesome follow up to diamond eyes. i don't think it's quite as good, but this is my second favorite album from deftones so far. this is another emotion packed album with some lovely lyricism.
romantic dreams and entombed are beautiful. i don't really hear love songs like this in a lot of metal music.
also, every track on this is so atmospheric. deftones have really captured their sound with this album. it has a perfect blend of metal and shoegaze. i keep ... read more
i was a little afraid going into this album, concerned it might be a flop for me like their prior album, their self-titled, would be, but i was pleasantly surprised.
i feel like this album is a precursor to diamond eyes. it isn't as strong as diamond eyes, but there are some very solid tracks. i honestly love the experimentation they did with this album. pink cellphone is an odd song, but, idk it just... works. i liked it.
i think it falls flat at the end with the cover of drive. ... read more
some people i know recommended i listen to sleep token. i said ok and listened to this because it's their most played single on spotify.
it's probably one of the worst things i've ever listened to.
what the actual fuck is this shit? why does the singer sound like a bootleg combo of sam smith, dan reynolds, and ed sheeran? this is supposed to be "metal" music. supposed to be. i don't know who sleep token thinks they're fooling, but this is NOT metal. this ... read more
one of my favorite albums of all time, and the album that started me on my deftones journey. this is a beautiful and emotional album. the band put so much dedication into each and every track, and you can hear it.
this album is optimistic, but also really details the pit in your stomach feeling of grief and loss. the sound and lyrics beg for chi cheng, the former drummer who was comatose at the time of this album's release, to come back and wake up. however, it also grieves his loss and ... read more
from a technical standpoint, i understand why people like this album so much. the production is fantastic, and deftones started to branch out from the nu metal sound of their prior albums, doing their best to shake off the immature teenage angst contained within those albums. this definitely has a more mature feel to it, taking on an almost fantastical tone with some of the lyrics in this album.
still, it has its weak points. despite them trying to grow as artists, some lyrics are still goofy ... read more
deftones took their last album and decided to actually try to get serious with it. this is a more well produced, cleaner, and slightly more mature version of their last album. it is angsty, yes, but a lot of rock and metal from this era was angsty. it is definitely a product of its time, and its very nostalgic for me as a result, which i think is why my score for it is so high.
the instrumentals are even better than the last album, and the production is a lot better. you can see deftones ... read more
a solid okay start as deftones first album. it sounds more like a demo tape than an actual studio album. which... well, it actually wasn't recorded in a studio for the most part, rather, in one of the band member's garage. extremely raw and rough around the edges with at times immature lyricism that shows the age of not only the album but the band members themselves.
but, there is a charm to it i think. and, i still think it showed the potential of deftones. the gritty screams from ... read more
a very meh album. i think the only track i thoroughly enjoyed was eucalyptus due to the strong lyricism, but everything else was just boring and... emotionally distant. also, i'm taking away points for having to sit through a taylor swift feature. really? taylor swift? fuck off.
shocked that the reviews for this album aren't better. i listened to the entirety of pendulums discography on a road trip and, as the final album on their discography, i think its their best. the songs meld together well, and i think the idea of telling a story/making a concept album while also being an edm album is pretty cool. it's very well done and the production is great. the last song with the ending being the sound bite of what sounds like someone struggling to keep their head ... read more
the angst in this is great. its very different from scotts other work but its still so fucking good.
i was pleasantly surprised by this album. i expected fairly mediocre indie pop, but the production and sound of this album is beautiful and unique. some of the lyrics are a little goofy, but it's fine. i found myself not being super bothered by them since the sound of this album was so well done.
a decent record. the soft acoustic sound works well with the singers vocals. it's a little same-y, but the songs are nice and the lyrics are well written.
