A great album, if a bit slow in the second half. It has lots of dope tracks though, and it is certainly a step up from the album previous it.
This is an amazing love-letter to hip-hop while also a fitting end to Logic's Def Jam days. What better way to leave the label that you were with for years than to leave them with a fat wad of bangers. Old-school production at its finest with Logic and a host of features bringing all the heat they can.
This album is full of bangers, and the storyline of the skits throughout is funny, if a bit overly "meta" and intrusive. Idk why he didn't separate the skits into their own tracks smh. YES the score is high, but if you check my other ratings of his work, you will see that I just fw Logic on a different level. :)
I've been a Logic fan since about 2018, and this truly is the culmination of his efforts. This set of songs is so good, so consistent, and so impactful. The skits are their own tracks (thank God), and carry worthy messages in their own right. The production is flawless, and the features from Lucy Rose and more importantly Robert Ivory elevate this project further. While I expect him to release more music in the future, I think this album is certainly worthy to be the send-off masterpiece ... read more
This is the first beabadoobee project I listened to, and it easily pulled me into her universe. Songs like "Sunny Day" and "See You Soon" keep the energy light, while my favorite track "Talk" and "Don't get the deal" bring up the intensity with Bea's vocals suiting every occasion. The story of this album is equal parts sad and happy, but these emotions are mixed together quite nicely into a fairly relistenable album.
It's hard to pin it down, but beabadoobee brings a certain vibe that just sits right with me so well. This album works well as something to put on for an hour to wash away time and worries. With Rick Rubin playing a part in this album, the production is especially solid, and the mix between rock, folk, and pop sounds makes for an engaging sonic palette that portrays a quiet optimism. I think Bea's music really suits me (I really enjoyed Beatopia too, review coming soon), and I hope to ... read more
I rate this album this high largely due to the production value. The musical choices are quite creative at times, and I really appreciate it. However, I haven't really returned to this album much after the first listen. There's definitely some killer tracks on this album, but I'm not entirely sold on it as a repeatable album listening experience. I know I'm sounding negative, but this is by no means a bad album. It's something I appreciate a lot, but it isn't 100% ... read more
Really solid, really groovy, really funky, really vocoder-y, really damn good. This album has some absolute classics on it and not a single track is bad.
This is cool, but I can't shake the feeling that it's also very generic. I wanted to really fw it, especially since I want more women voices in metal, and her performance with KL went crazy. While some songs certainly hit (vital, the center's falling out, negative spaces), I would really love to hear her voice on more adventurous, left-field metal production while retaining the hard edge I know she can bring (a-la V.A.N. with Bad Omens). I have yet to listen to her other metal ... read more
Jazz + prog metal + djent in a fum four track combo meal. It has great playing, including plenty of solo, and the mashup of the aforementioned genres is very pleasing to my jazz and metal sensibilities. In some ways, this is what modern jazz is meant to be. I certainly recommend giving this a go next time you want to listen to some jazz that has a bit of spice to it.
This was the first grindcore album I listened to (more than a year ago at this point), and I found it really fun. 18 songs, yet only the project is only 20 min, and the songs never even reach 2 minutes apiece. Insane mosh music injected straight into your nervous system more or less. If you're so inclined, you can find some interesting lyrics hidden in these tracks on a variety of social justice issues. It can feel the same across the songs, but they're all so short that you're ... read more
My first Counterparts project, and it's pretty damn good. Breakdowns, slamming riffs, and pissed vocals all the way through. Coming off of the KL high from last year, this project maybe didn't hit as much as it could have (I listened to it his January). But it still goes hard as fuck, and I appreciate how hardcore and metalcore keep blending into each other these days. Shout out the music video for the first two songs btw, it's a proper video full of imagery and blood, which is ... read more
There's some cool ideas on here, and some nice vibes. It is solid enough to enjoy while by no means blowing your mind. Give it a background listen and maybe you'll find some enjoyment in it. :)
While the cover art may lead you to believe this is an album of well-worn classics, it would be more accurate to say that this album is a future country classic. These songs will have you rolling on the floor laughing as Ricky Chilton delivers perfect parodies of country music with a solid set of backing tracks behind him (several of the songs are re-recorded from the original versions, and the production value has gone up several notches as a consequence). If you try to take this project ... read more
Lemme put y'all on. For fans of Squarepusher, perhaps Aphex Twin, really creative electronic music, or simply ADHD music, this is a must listen. I really really love it when electronic music is combined with other genres, and jazz is my first musical love, so it makes perfect sense to combine these in my mind. Will this record challenge you a bit? Yes, it goes a million miles a minute with some sections of borderline abrasive sonic spaces. But, these moments are balanced out by softer ... read more
The banger ratio is high on this one. Everyone who followed the beef (including me) was quite excited to see this drop, and I feel like it delivered. Can we talk about Luther? After I first heard this song, I played it at least once every day after for close to 2 weeks. It's just so perfectly smooth and melodic, not to mention the beat is gorgeous. I also have to mention hey now as my favorite rap track from this project. It carries such an ominous lethality that is reminiscent of meet the ... read more
I recently finished "Hip-Hop is History" written by Questlove, and after greatly enjoying and learning from the book, I decided to see what The Roots was all about. I was pleasantly surprised at how groovy and interesting this album is. Some production choices at first glance seem odd, but upon fully listening they are incredibly cohesive and creative. I especially got inspiration from the vocal mixing on this album that I've put into mixing I'm doing for a rapper ... read more
