Sainthood is where it finally happens, a T&S album where I can hear what makes each twin unique and at the same time, a joint effort where their songs play and work off of one another without stepping on the toes of another. Tegan’s pop moments here work well with Sara’s, The opening one two punch of Arrow into Don’t Rush suggest collaborative songwriting. Only with Hell and Northshore do we get a younger sibling of The Con and Hop A Plane, these are perhaps the two most ... read more

The Con, the moment where perhaps, more than any other T&S album, makes me wish for a solo effort from both twins. The Con covers much of the same lyrical territory as So Jealous and follows the same formula. Evenly split, seven songs from Tegan, Seven from Sara. While the album is much more adventurous and developed than So Jealous, The Con never gels as a truly cohesive statement or purpose.

Tegan does what Tegan does best, her songs reach for the heavens with choruses and arrangements ... read more

So Jealous has at times been in heavy rotation for me, but with each passing year I find less to love here with every spin. There are still some brilliant moments and fun to be had; unfortunately, the songs are often too repetitive and bloated in their arrangements to age gracefully. The word love comes up way too often. Sara's ... read more

Coming off of their second attempt at producing a mature well rounded album, If It Was You drops (mostly) the preachy folk-rock of that album for more straight forward pop-rock, the album is more consistent and cohesive in its sound. Tegan and Sara's differences in songwriting take sharper form here, with Tegan becoming the full on rocker of the two, while Sara spends her time working on clever phrases and sharper style of singing. But even with their differing methods, the songs work well ... read more

This Business of Art is an improved exploration of the sounds covered on T&S's debut. Across the eleven tracks here, they exhibit an ear for sharp pop hooks and pair them with rougher and folkier songs. While nothing here is terrible, this mixture leaves the album a bit uneven. Songs like Frozen, My Number, and Not with You foreshadow the direct pop songwriting that T&S would take further over ten years later with Heartthrob and LYTD. While tracks like Proud, Freedom, and Hype are more ... read more
