While Aimee doesn't do anything drastically different from the studio versions, this live album works well as an introduction to her career. Live at St. Ann's Warehouse, while not including some of her essential tracks, acts like a best of compilation, selecting a few key tracks from every one of her previous studio albums and a sampling of 2005's The Forgotten Arm. The recording sounds clear and offers a few quaint little moments between Aimee and the audience.

I love when folk music becomes ambient, Ghost Forests is such a release. Lattimore and Baird working together to craft songs of simple beauty through complex compositions, the vocals don't require analysis so much as they become another instrument floating along as every track unfolds. Fair Annie (not being an original) is the only track the sounds somewhat out of place. And excluding the short Blue Burning the songs are of medium length; however, at thirty-six minutes, they pass by quickly. ... read more

After the bloated Hazards of Love, The Decemberists scaled back their ambitions with the relatively light The King is Dead, one album later and they seem determined to combine the two, alas this isn't The Crane Wife or Picaresque. The album opens with a clunky attempt at self-referential breaking the fourth wall bombast but just sounds pretentious, definitely not the strongest way to start an overlong and stuffing-heavy album. The next track Cavalry Captain regains a little of what makes The ... read more

Beyondless is Iceage's most melodic and accessible album. At ten songs, the record is tight, starting with the propulsive Hurrah and never losing the energy set by that song. Iceage turn away from the faster punk oriented sound of their first two albums and move in a more expansive direction. Pain Killer boasts a refrain that is one of the most ear worm lines this year. Lead single Catch It required a few listens to appreciate but reveals its genius in time. Thieves Like Us and Showtime show a ... read more

More varied than the past two Godspeed releases, Pissing Stars is an expressive exploration of atmosphere and sound that recalls the best of Godspeed You's best work. Efrim's singing carries the record, though he isn't the best singer, there is an urgent sound to his vocals here. The Beauty of Children sounds like some bizarro world pop radio single. Amongst his singing there are instrumental passages that work more atmospherically than the singer-songwriter material. Taken as a whole, Pissing ... read more
