First Comes the Night taken with Isaak's albums post-2000 do what he never managed to do on his first seven albums, become a caricature of himself. There are songs here that mine the fifties and sixties but offer nothing more than a replica of that sound. It's the record of someone who has settled into where he is. A musician ultimately made irrelevant by the new millennium, unable to keep up with emerging trends or styles, the ultimate boomer dad-rock pastiche.

Beyond the Sun does what Isaak had avoided for over twenty years, a covers album of Elvis songs. Not everything here is an Elvis original, seven of the fourteen songs are, but the other seven include songs by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Warren Smith, Jimmy Wages. Live it Up; the sole Isaak original included here fits in fine with the covers stylistically but offers nothing new, its typical of Isaak's later career.

The songs have little additional flourishes here and there that clutter the arrangements, whereas, on previous albums, the songs benefit from their simplicity. None of these songs are terrible; they are just ... read more
