I'm not too deep in the GBV weeds, but I got my hands on this CD towards the end of last year, and it is easily one of my favorite Pollard-associated project period. Instrumentally, it's consistently creative and interesting, his lyrics are as on-point as ever, and is in stellar vocal form. Really not a lowlight here.

Thank you KEXP for putting me on to peak. If I have any overarching complaint with this record, I feel like the mixes in general feel a little muffled (at least on a headphone listen, I preferred how it sounded in my car cruising with the windows down). It's not gonna blow your mind, but the vocals are beautiful, and there's violin, so how can anyone dislike this? A very fun record that packs a lot of memorable hooks in about half an hour. Really enjoying this.

I got this CD for my girlfriend after she put me onto them, and now I feel like I need one myself. I've been listening to this non-stop for the past month or so, at least once a week. Highlights: Cross My Heart, Downtown Lover, Maybe Not Tonight, Body, Always Talking about You
Mild Highlights: 23, All Bad Parts, Do You Know What I'm Thinking
I've already listened about 3-4 times this past week since it dropped, and while I liked it on first listen, I definitely like it more now. There are really only four big standouts, but each song is still good to some degree.

Yeah, I get this was intended to be pretty simple and stripped back, but it doesn't mean this album doesn't feel painfully long and boring much of the time. I'm not against Elvis sticking to a specific instrumental style for a whole album, but considering how shabby some of his vocal performances can be throughout this along with some serious lack of vocal chemistry with the backing vocalist(s) much of the time, the entire album experience feels 15-20 minutes longer than it ... read more
