Madlib's instrumentals give the whole project a mystical atmoshpere, truly unique. Freddie is amazing too, though a bit worse at rapping than Madlib is at production. The features are all amazing, especially love them on the outro. Also a very consistent tracklist, but with a weaker last leg.
Really strong first leg and fantastic outro, but a somewhat disappointing middle section, where the songs' production and chorus aren't as catchy and the other ones. Still, the highs are great bangers
Solid listen, Future isn't an amazing lyricist but he's good enough to pull us into his egotrip. It's some boastful stuff so you have classic themes like the holy trinity of drugs, sex and money but also some more varied ones like loyalty, the state of the music industry and violence in the ghetto.
A majority of tracks are just decent, but some excel in a certain area, like the lyrics of Slave Master, surprisingly personal, or the production of I Serve The Base and ... read more
Basically JPEGMAFIA: The Album. Showcases all of his versatility, though it can get long at times
Holy shit this grew massively on me, although it took me a whole year lmao. The album starts off pretty "normally" with verse-chorus-verse structures, but starting from My thoughts on neogaf dying it's almost only long interludes. It's very experimental and was kinda boring to me, but then something clicked. The atmosphere is immaculate and Peggy actually has humour here and isn't acting like this corny tough guy. Very unique album
Bribes of genius hidden behind incredible laziness
Jpeg used to put so much effort into his work, but here he's barely even trying.
The production is very disappointing. I found it fresh at first, with the newly added dubstep influences. But as I listened to the album more and more, I thought the instrumentals were a mess. Firstly, there are the same issues as on ILDMLFY, where the new gimmicky sound is used over and over, to the point that it at times loses its uniqueness and impact. A ... read more
First time lyrics have genuinely moved me emotionally
So far, my Geese listening journey has been amazing. I loved their diversity in sounds, their quirkiness and catchiness. I also couldn't get enough of Cameron Winter's vocals and personality, and Heavy Metal is here to satisfy my hunger.
Being way more receptive to hard-hitting bangers than to slow and emotional ballads, I was worried I’d have a mixed reaction. But this man has so much personality that I loved this ... read more
People are being so dramatic about the autotune imo. Sure it's not usual for The Strokes but I think it fits well this new spacy vibe they're trying to capture. The guitars here are great, especially in the chorus with the "juicy" sound that was on Going Shopping. So yeah, another great single to me, although I would agree that the autotune fits more a catchy banger than a slow love song
Paranoid Android, Exit Music, Karma Police and No Surprises are such high highs that it makes every other track look a bit weak in comparison
This album feels like eating the ultimate chocolate cake.
On 3D Country, Geese shifted away from their punk influences and developed a far more unique sound that became their signature on Getting Killed: pile on as much instrumentation as possible, add Cameron Winter's syrupy voice, and you get a very colourful album. When I said "pile on as much instrumentation as possible", it wasn't derogatory nor a made-up thing, since that's how Cameron described the production of ... read more
An okay start
I was completely blown away by Geese's latest album, Getting Killed. So I decided to listen to their discography, starting with their first album, Projector.
During this era, most of the band's members were still out of high school, and while I can already sense their talent from the start, they haven't yet developed a distinct and polished sound. The sound here is much darker and more stripped back than the usual dense and abundant instrumentals on their latest ... read more
One of the most instrumentally dense albums I've heard
When I saw this album cover, I was immediately intrigued. So, when I dove into it, I was, to say the least, surprised by the content. This album is a lot of things; it's theatrical, it's a jungle of sounds, it's rock, and it's jazz. I'm not really familiar with the genre, so at first I had mixed feelings about this project. I greatly admired its ambition, but it just didn't click with me. Thankfully, it ... read more
ahh... low cortisol...
Just from the cover art you know what mood you're in for. The birds flying freely, the relaxing colors... Mr. Takanaka made sure you were in a good mental state to join his cruise. Look, he has a surfboard guitar! Isn't that cool? Let's talk about it !
The instrumentals are the main attraction of this project. Of course, you have Takanaka and his guitar, which delivers incredible performances. On トーキョー レギー, the second track, you have these ... read more
My introduction to underscores
At 33 minute long, this project is on the short side so April here gives everything she has. This is full of great tunes and catchy ass songs. The production is electronic-heavy, tho the last leg of the LP goes for a more folky sound. I have however some criticism: some songs have interesting ideas but feel half-baked, I'm thinking of 70% and Where did you fall. Even though it's part of the hyperpop aesthetic, the lyrics can get cringe. They also just ... read more
Kinda overhyped but some all-timers
Second Sleep: 10/10
Star Eyes: 8/10
Human Happens: 8/10
Paint Me A Picture: 8/10
Unoriginal: 9,5/10
Black-Eyed Susan Club: 10/10
This Is The World (I Made It For You): 8,5/10
Nice Day: 7/10
Has a weak 1st half ngl, there are lots of annoying things about some songs (high-pitched voices, stupid ass sound effects, wonky synths), some are half-baked
Thankfully the second half picks up, but there are still some irritating parts of songs that would be otherwise amazing
A breath of fresh air
My dad played this album in the car when it got released and he thought it was okay. But for me, I heard something special. So why am I reviewing it only now ? Uhmm it sounds pretty nerdy but I wanted to refine my ear in order to get the maximum out of this album (like catching all the subtleties in the instrumentation and lyrics, and really feeling the moods they put you in, etc). And boy am I happy to have waited, because what would have been a pretty good album before ... read more
