A little frontloaded. I'm the man who loves you - poor places not as good as the rest sadly
Combining their sound from treasure with the calming prettiness of victorialand, blue bell knoll signifies a shift in their discography towards poppier territory. This sound would later be followed up and amplified with what many consider their magnum opus, heaven or las vegas.
However, what sets this album apart for me, is how it remains the mystery of their previous albums, while ditching the darkness. Songs like spooning the good singing gum are a great example of this.
As well as this, ... read more
So much potential is shown with this sound but execution could be better. A little front loaded tbh as well.
Took me a while to get into, but just like loveless this too is incredible. Slightly frontloaded tho. All I need and lose my breath are both fantastic I love them
This is one of the best Cocteau twins release honestly.
The title track and pearly dew drops are like a fully realized version of their sound from head over heels.
The build up in the title track is excellent, and then the release happens ushering in the second part of the song , just pure bliss.
Pearly dew drops follows a pretty simple pop structure, but benefits greatly from having one of the best melodies ever so there's that.
Pepper tree is cool too but just not as noteworthy. ... read more
I absolutely love the vocals on this. So soft and delicate.
While it's really not anything special, it does what it's trying to do very well and for that reason I can appreciate this release a lot.
I've seen a lot of praise for age of consent, and rightfully so.
But your silent face is better. The emotion in it is so precise and I can't describe it at all but it's the same feeling the end of evangelion gives me for some reason. The bounce in the synths is fucking incredible and the atmospheric pad which comes in along with all the guitar line is just too much.
Leave me alone is also insane and the rest of the songs are good too. Was in my top 5 for a while last year tbh. Also I got ... read more
Headache is one of the greatest songs of all time to me. Everytime I hear it I'm greatly moved. Its very simple and the guitar melody is pretty repetitive but something about the vocals and atmosphere makes this song absolutely insane. And then following up this emotional catharsis is the greatly calming and uplifting I'm clean now.
Only 2 songs but one of my favorite releases ever
The second half of this album is peak music (especially by this river) but unfortunately some of the first half is boring.
