This is quite the jarring change of pace from the later work of The Beatles that I've heard before this. I expected to hate how much emphasis their songs had on love in their earlier career after hearing Help!, but jeez the writing is so bland. The harmonies carry this album and make these otherwise boring songs somewhat fun and good even.
Favorite Tracks: Ask Me Why, Twist and Shout.
Least Favorite Tracks: Chains, Boys.
I have never listened to anything by 100 gecs before this album. I've heard of them from time to time from my friends, and given the music those friends listen to, I thought they were a more modern rock band. I decided to give the album a shot because of the short run time, something that I prize in albums as 1+ hour listens are hard for me to get invested in and re-listen to. Worst case scenario, if I hated what I heard, it wouldn't take long for it to be over.
It didn't take very long (less ... read more
For some reason I find the lyricism and sound of this album much less intriguing than Folklore but this is still a fun listen that with a shorter runtime would appeal to me more (I have the same feeling towards Folklore). Biggest takeaway of this is that I really Taylor just went in this direction from here on out with her music, since she was able to delve into the folk style not once but twice in completely different ways without feeling stale, which I really appreciate and respect.
So many solid tracks. My favorite Beatles album (I'll update if listening to Abbey Road changes this) and my current favorite album ever out of the limited number of albums I've listened to. Just wow.
Favorite Tracks: Taxman, Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere, And Your Bird Can Sing, For No One.
Least Favorite Tracks: Yellow Submarine (still good).
I really like this album, but as time goes on, the more I feel that many of these tracks are just "good" and not groundbreaking like they're made out to be. I absolutely love the framing device of the album though, especially with the placement of "A Day in the Life".
Favorite Tracks: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Within you Without You, A Day in the Life.
Least Favorite Tracks: Good Morning Good Morning.
Only not a 90+ because the second half is just singles, which I feel has to be penalized somewhat. Really fun listen with a first half that interests me more than Sgt. Pepper and a second half that probably has the most solid consecutive track listening I've heard on a Beatles album.
Favorite Tracks: The Fool On the Hill, Hello, Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane.
Least Favorite Tracks: Flying (I still like it though).
First Beatles album review I've written, for context on my perspective of their music as of reviewing this, I've heard all their albums from Help! to this album. And like many before me have said, this album is inconsistent as hell and contains so many mid, and dare I say a handful of bad Beatles tracks, which I haven't really seen on the albums I've listened to yet. It's definitely a widely different experience than Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, and Magical Mystery Tour, which felt like they had a ... read more
Wow, I love this album. It took a few listens for it to catch on, but I'm glad I returned to it a few times. I love the folk/folk pop approach to the album and it made me really fall in love with Taylor's songwriting. When listening to the album, I almost picture it to be a dramatic poetry reading, talking place in the forest bordering on some New England town, while the music is just ambient noise in the background. There are a lot of good song ideas here that divulge from what I normally see ... read more
On first listen, this sounded magical and the music really invaded my soul through my ears. After hearing it a bit, the hype dies down but it still sounds amazing.
Favorite Tracks: Leave the Door Open, After Last Night, Smokin Out the Window, Put On A Smile.
Least Favorite Tracks: Skate.
Rap isn't really my genre so I won't say much on this album, but it sure is amazing. You could pick out almost any song on this album and I'd say it has some of the best production I've ever heard and all of it put together makes this a wonderful listening experience. While a lot of the songs tend to have at least one feature segment that I'm not a huge fan of, most of this project hits for me nonetheless. It's interesting to listen to this considering it was Kanye's response to public ... read more
This album doesn't really fit my taste in music, given that it's mostly focused on romance from a teen's perspective, which I've never really connected to. However, I was caught off guard by the more minimalistic production that a lot of the non-hit songs seemed to take and I really like the ballad feel of "drivers license" and "traitor". However, none of the non-hit songs really stuck out to me, as many of them sounded rather mediocre or were super forgettable compared to ... read more
Don't have a whole lot to say about this so this'll be short, unstructured, and ranty. Most of the songs are good, but there's a little bit too much "Gen-Z" appeal and romance emphasis for me. "Family Line" is pretty good and I'd like to see more songs like this in the future. My score would probably be a lot lower if I wasn't such a fan of Conan's voice. I feel like the album tries too hard to do thing sometimes. "Disaster" is an incredibly boring and formulaic ... read more
Pretty big fan of the album's first half. Not as much of a "Helmet" fan compared to the other songs in this section, but I think my love for the tracks that surround it make me like it a bit more. The instrumentation and vocals are on point and each song feels like they have their own intended style and come off as super unique. I'm a big fan of Steve Lacy's voice, and it is put on full display here. Unfortunately, I think "2gether" and "Cody Freestyle" really make ... read more
