Quite a nice and catchy song! Definitely outside of what I normally listen to. The only thing I'd say is that the guitar sounds a bit overbearing and makes the vocals harder to hear, but that might just be a me thing/my unfamiliarity with the genre. The cover is pretty neat too.
Not going to lie, I used to think that the first two pages of "Frankenstein", by Mary Shelly, weren't up to snuff. I thought they were okay, for sure, but never saw them, or the introductory section as a whole as much to marvel at. When I first read them, about a year and a half ago, I was quite underwhelmed, a feeling that (unfortunately) stuck with me throughout most of the novel. Why did Mary Shelly decide to start this book about a monster with some dull correspondence between an ... read more
I was going to update my reviews from "Revolver" to the White Album so that they're all arranged in chronological order before reviewing this, but then realized that none of those are necessarily outdated and I just have more thoughts on them now. So I guess I'm sort of skipping to "Yellow Submarine", but whatever.
I definitely agree with the sentiment that "Yellow Submarine" is the worst album from The Beatles. It doesn't even feel like a true album, considering ... read more
Another reposted and updated Beatles review. The original is at the bottom, the new one is at the top.
NEW REVIEW:
I must've been on some weird "Revolver" high or something for the first 4 months after hearing this. I originally scored this album as a 65 or something. Criminal behavior. I don't think I'll be able to explain exactly why my opinion changed or everything I like about this since I don't like track-by-track reviews, but I'll provide some highlights.
Anyways, this is not ... read more
So I'm going to repost this review with some edits since I've gone through all of The Beatles work in chronological order up to here. And I have some new thoughts from this album to The White Album. I'll keep the original review below, but will have a short new one above it.
NEW REVIEW:
I still generally agree with what I said in my original review, but listening to the older albums from The Beatles has given me more appreciation for this album. I would still say that tracks 4-11 are still ... read more
Finally, the pre-Help! slog is over! Honestly, I was expecting less from this record, but I was somewhat pleasantly surprised. The subject matter is as old as ever and the music is outdated as heck, but it comes off more charming here than it does on "Please Please Me" and "With the Beatles". I think the decently large presence of songs that are on the ballad/folk side really swayed me on this one.
Completely random comment, but I find it hilarious when Ringo calls out to ... read more
This certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I was waiting for an extension of the sound on "For Emma, Forever Ago", and that's not really what Bon Iver went for here. There's quite a bit more going on instrumentally than on Bon Iver's debut album, and while it's nice to hear, it...didn't really work for me? I feel a bit dumb saying that considering I criticized/couldn't get invested in FE, FA because of how the songs didn't really go places, but I've been listening to it a lot more ... read more
This EP really leaves me wanting more. Not because it falls short or anything, but because it's an EP that I wish were a full length album. I think the deluxe version of Fleet Foxes self-titled debut album includes this EP as bonus tracks, so I guess you can get that in a way.
Anyway, yeah, this sounds really good. Again, I'm awestruck at how defined Fleet Foxes' sound is. These songs don't give me the same kind of medieval village/forest soundtrack vibe that some of the songs on their album ... read more
Wow, what a charming listen. I can't believe that Fleet Foxes' self-titled LP is a debut album, it feels like the group has a complete understanding of their strengths and the niche they occupy in the music world. And they own it perfectly. Most of these songs, from some combination of the lyrics, instrumentation, and vocals exude such a blissful feeling that no other music I've heard really matches. The album is just 40 minutes of pure catharsis, so great that even while tired at midnight, I ... read more
To start, I need to get something off my chest. I had quite a BTS phase during the pandemic, the full extent of which I won't be willing to admit for at least a good decade. In a bit of a paradoxical way, I don't like K-pop and didn't even like it much back then. The aesthetic, heavy production, dancing, and autotune weren't for me at all, but I could get behind two things: the vocals (when autotune wasn't used) and some of the rapping, especially Suga's. Of the BTS members, he's the only one ... read more
Julien Baker's debut album, "Sprained Ankle", is a half hour journey through Baker's experiences with relationships, disconnection with others, and substance abuse, detailing how they have tied into her relationship with religion. She tells of her experiences with the emotional transparency that one would only expect from a close friend, having no qualms with peeling back the bandages, cuts, and scars of her past and present to portray who she is and what she has been through. There ... read more
I went into this project after already hearing the first full length album from boygenius, "the record", which I really liked, and wasn't sure how it'd stack up. The critics rated "the record" higher, the audience rated it lower, and each group had about twice the amount of reviews than what's on their self-titled EP. I've actually heard a couple of these tracks already from tuning into the Youtube livestream of their Coachella performance and they sounded nice, so my ... read more
"A Hard Day's Night" is the only pre-"Help!" album by The Beatles that I was excited to listen to, exclusively because of the title track. Which absolutely bangs. I might've set my expectations a bit too high, since nothing else on the album gets even close to that songs greatness, but I wasn't exactly disappointed by what I heard either.
I can't really put to words why, but these songs feel better and more consistent than their first two albums. Most of the songs are in ... read more
The Beatles sophomore album, "With The Beatles" is simply okay. The harmonies are satisfying and most of the lyrics are boring...so nothing has changed from their debut, "Please Please Me". If anything, I liked this project slightly less, as it feels lower energy than their prior record. That may be just because some of the songs or slower, but it certainly doesn't help make the listening experience more interesting.
On a completely unrelated note, this album cover is ... read more
So, I've rated a handful of albums now, and, despite their range of quality, I consider all of them to be more enjoyable than not at the very least. Honestly, it's a bit hard for me to consume media that I don't like. Normally, for fear of wasting time/money, I take great care in ensuring that I will like something before getting into it, whether it be books, video games, movies, music, etc. Also, for something like music, I try and factor in the subjective nature, so even if a project doesn't ... read more
Keshi was one of my more listened-to artists last year. I discovered him in early summer when his acoustic rendition of "drunk" ended up in my recommended, and I feel in love with his voice. I spent a lot of time listening to his other acoustic/live music because of his voice, and when I heard he had an recently released album, I was actually excited about it, despite me almost never listening to albums before last year.
However, I felt pretty jarred by the shift in musical styles ... read more
Edit: 76->95->99. Thank you to everyone who gave this album a great review, tying it into their own experiences. I often found myself relating and they helped me like this album so much more. I'm keeping these old and pretty outdated reviews as a reminder to never turn away from an album without giving it a fair shot...or in this case, many shots. I don't really like having favorites for things as I prefer having an upper echelon of stuff that are in contention for the top spot. But this ... read more
As of right now, Phoebe Bridgers’ “Punisher” might my favorite album I’ve ever heard. Everything is on point, from the lyrics to the production to the vocals to the cover art. I was underwhelmed on first listen, but I have been blown away by the emotional power of this impeccable project.
There's something so intimate and confessional about this album. While it certainly feels sad and depressive as a whole, it doesn't feel like it's "forcing" you to feel that ... read more
I previously had a pretty long review for this written where I went into a lot of stuff for each song, since I have found that I'll make a review and feel that I left stuff out afterwards. However, looking back at the long review I had, I realized that, even after just a few days, the same problem of omission of stuff I remembered as time goes on but with the added problem of my thoughts and opinions being outdated. So I'mma trim what I said down a bit.
"the record" by boygenius is ... read more
I chose to listen to the project after seeing the goofy tracklist, knowing nothing about JPEGMAFIA or Danny Brown. I was expecting some either awful Lil Pump sounding songs or some Bo Burnham type satire. I was kinda surprised when I looked up JPEGMAFIA on this site and saw how many "Must Hear Albums" he had. I was absolutely surprised and not expecting what I actually heard on this album...which I wasn't a huge fan of.
Saying that there's a lot going on here when it comes to ... read more
