The 1975 - Being Funny in a Foreign Language
80

First impressions:
Probably their most consistent effort yet! This is first time the band hasn’t released the best songs off an album as singles.

Fantano prediction: decent to strong 7.

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
90

EDIT: Settled on 90 but there's a chance it might go up. This thing is so damn good.

Listened to this at least 5 times through and yeah it's definitely an aoty contender. Instrumental is such a killer opener. All the singles are amazing. The new recording of Sunglasses is growing on me, its intro is a lot cooler and the rest of the track seems to pack more of a punch in places. Feeling an 85+ right now and I expect fantano to give this a strong 8.

The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
70

A step back for the band, despite the string of excellent singles (some of their best stuff in my opinion.) Trim this album to 11 tracks and you have a great listen.. in fact... here's a desired tracklist.

1. Don't Worry
2. People
3. Me & You Together Song
4. Roadkill
5. Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America
6. The Birthday Party
7. Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)
8. Frail State of Mind
9. If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)
10. Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied
11. Guys

The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)
90

Such a goddamn fucking bop

Childish Gambino - 3.15.20
75

Excellent first half. Gambino channels Prince and its fucking glorious. Falls off in second half but always engaging.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen
90

holy fuck. nick cave and the bad seeds overwhelm me once more with Ghosteen. this thing moves so well, it's almost like entering another world or realm, similar to the album's cover. the synthesizers and cave's voice shouldn't work but amazingly they do. grief, death, sadness, hope, and love, it's all there and spoken immensely by him. Ghosteen might be one of the most ethereal pieces in music that I've ever heard.

Kim Petras - TURN OFF THE LIGHT
80

call me a Kim Petras stan now because this collection of electrifying pop has got me hooked! i'd only heard Petras from her collabs with charli and now finally listening to a project from the singer i can understand why she has such an adoring fanbase. catchy as hell and i actually don't mind the instrumental tracks at all.

Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
80

compared to her previous works, this album is enormous in sound, her most daring yet—i mean listen to the opening track "lark" and you can figure that one out. is it her best? probably, but i can still see myself coming back to "my woman" for a more enjoyable, because i feel like this one sucks the life out of me at times, which is mostly a good thing.

Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin¿
85

this was the first album i digested in this insanely good week of music releases and i honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as i did. production is fantastic and Danny manages to do his thing over top of it pretty well, he's more comedic than ever on here. it isn't as weird and experimental as atrocity exhibition, but it doesn't seem to be interested in doing that — in a way, its sweet and shortness is what makes it a breezy fun time.

Young Thug - So Much Fun
60

Ever since Thugger dropped his opus Jeffery, I've been more and more disappointed with everything he has later put out (with the exception of the Carnage Collab and Beautiful Thugger Girls). Listening to So Much Fun, I'm still struggling to believe he'll make something as monstrous and exciting as Jeffery, or Barter 6, or even the Slime Seasons for that matter. At nineteen tracks it's an up and down experience, each one bouncy and repetitive and familiar, and really lacking the uniqueness that ... read more

Florist - Emily Alone
85

At first glance, Emily Alone can almost come off as an effortless splice of indie folk.. but this is truly one of the things that I love about this album. How hushed and sparse it feels, how honest the lyrics feel, singing of death, loneliness, and yearning—things that compliment the peaceful and quiet nature of Florist's music. There's a whole lot of beauty in this album, and I can't stop coming back to it.

Kero Kero Bonito - Time 'n' Place
79

The album marks a departure from the band's usual explosive electro-pop, stripping themselves of upbeat, ditzy lyrics and instead head into a bigger, scarier world with their new sound. Less bops, more rocks.

The Internet - Hive Mind
77

It's a grower.

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch
69

Maybe the weakest effort in the group's discography, yet breaks a few barriers and keeps tearing them apart — Year of the Snitch is punky as hell, and also, very disruptive like any Death Grips project.

Favorite Track: Hahaha

SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
86

It's incredible how well this album has grown on me — from a rating of 70, to an 82, and finally an 86 — considering how long ago it was when I first listened to it. SOPHIE's debut is a smashing, exhilarating experience from start to finish — a clash of glitch pop madness and unconventional pop, so aggressive, so beautiful, and so peculiar. The Ambient sections can slow this thing down, but otherwise, SOPHIE dishes out a wonderful debut.

Drake - Scorpion
63

25 track double album, Scorpion, can be most described as a well-worn pursuit into drudging and repetitive sad rap, conceived from the ever so popular Drake. And while there are a few hits here and there, the artist manages to slip up in the same steps as Migos — churning out too many tracks on one project and hoping for the best. The result is semi-confessional, semi-catchy, and semi-interesting.

Favorite Track: Nice For What

Teyana Taylor - K.T.S.E.
82

This thing has some incredible, and classic, Kanye West production — but it's also the work of Teyana Taylor's voice that make the album intoxicating.

Favorite Track: Hurry

Tierra Whack - Whack World
88

One of the year's most creative and colorful outputs, Whack World, the debut LP from North Philly rapper Tierra Whack, is something you wouldn't expect, using fifteen tracks and splitting them into fifteen minutes of various styles and feelings, breathing life into a new sense of pop-rap euphoria.

Favorite Track: Fruit Salad, Pet Cemetary, Cable Guy.

The Carters - EVERYTHING IS LOVE
73

Beyonce and Jay-Z sound perfect together, and while their first album under The Carters can grow somewhat tiresome towards its second half, the pair no doubt work ferociously next to each other. Lead single APESHIT is a blazing banger, probably the best Migos' track you'll ever hear sung through better pairings.
