It's crazy how Poppy evolved from essentially a meme to an artist making pop music that subverts expectations with every album.
With I Disagree in particular, she fully commits to delving into her own spin on alternative metal. As a result, we get a wide variety of sounds that in theory should clash with each other but work well together. The main sounds she plays around with include industrial metal, dream pop, and even a bit of nu metal. In the end, we are left with some catchy pop ... read more
It's been slightly longer than a week, but now I'm back baby.
In a world where harsh and experimental has flourished in many directions beyond our control, Exmilitary still stands as being a unique experience that not even Death Grips themselves have been able to replicate. This record is a strange mix of rap and rock with many other sounds in-between making appearances through the addition of samples used for the beats. What we are left with is something raw that is equally ... read more
She continues to impress.
With her most recent album, Billie Eilish has established yet even more progress in maturing as a music artist with HIT ME HARD AND SHOFT. On here, FINNEAS dishes out the best production we have heard on her projects so far, which really elevates her voice. Billie's vocal abilities have also improved here as her vocals echo through the sound of this album making you experience every note. What this record may lack in the highs of the previous release are made up ... read more
I don't want your number.
After dropping the giant that was IGOR, Tyler returns to a rap-driven direction with CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. It is a return to what I find to be Tyler's best qualities, as this is where Tyler's delivery and personality shine like it did in Flower Boy. The record as a whole is produced well and contains his humor while also staying serious when it counts. Sometimes the amount of short tracks along with a couple 8 minute plus tracks sometimes makes it an ... read more
This is where Billie's talents truly began to shine.
Happier Than Ever in every way is a true maturation of Billie Eilish as a vocalist and in sound. She has always had a dark edge to her, but it is on here where she opens up and delves into some highly sensitive subjects and themes. Especially with as young as she was at the time, it is impressive how she is able to hold herself up as a profoundly mature and provocative as a vocalist. The record's production and sound is also ... read more
I think IGOR is a good album, but... just maybe not as great as everyone says it is.
After Flower Boy, Tyler took a huge departure from his previous sound to make an intimate breakup album. The strongest elements that hold this record is the production and Tyler's general demeanor makes this experience all the more endearing. The writing on here is also quite good, but there are occasionally times where it can get extremely on the nose for me. The biggest thing that holds this release ... read more
Billie is a BAD GUY!?
Billie Eilish's debut record is a bit rough around the edges, but there are some good ideas on display here. With her low vocals and the bass-heavy production, this record creates an edgy and dark atmosphere that seems to be an acquired taste. A good portion of the tracks on here are serviceable, but sometimes Billie's voice gets shrouded in the production or it feels like she is putting her all on certain performances. Most of her biggest hits can be found on ... read more
This has shrunken on me overtime, but it is still very good.
Deftones’ currently latest album continues to do what the band does best, but throws in a few new elements to keep it interesting. They continue incorporating the dreamy-like dissonance that makes their sound good, and also sprinkles in a bit of darkness that elevated some of their earlier records. Like any Deftones album there are some standouts, but Ohms in particular can occasionally veer into sounding generic although it ... read more
Is good.
While I have not dived into Tyler, the Creator's earlier material, I am aware that reception on them is quite mixed. This makes it all the more crazy that this came out after something like Cherry Bomb if it is as not great as I hear it is. Flower Boy is a wonderful mix of hip hop and R&B sprinkled with the charming personality that is Tyler. His demeanor is a fine balance between an intensionally, but tastefully goofy delivery while also being serious when he needs to be. I ... read more
A bad Deftones album is still a good album.
After waiting four years since the release of Koi No Yokan, I can understand why people would be disappointed. Gore inherently does not do much of anything wrong quality wise, but it is on here where you will find the most rehashed ideas in Deftones’ discography mostly without them trying new things. All of the songs on here sound quite good, but they are not anything that you have not heard from them before. Aside from a few standouts ... read more
Same good sounds from Frank Ocean, but on a different channel.
I give it a similar rating to channel ORANGE because these two albums are of similar quality to me, but Blonde gets its quality for different reasons. While the former deals with a variety of emotions, the latter sells itself as a more depressing experience dealing with themes such as heartbreak and self-esteem. ORANGE to me had more highlights but I think Blonde is more consistent overall. I am not entirely sure which album I vibe ... read more
Rosemary should've been the closing track, otherwise it's perfect.
When I think of Deftones and everything that makes them stand out in their sound and atmosphere, this is the album that comes to mind for me. The heaviness mixed with the dissonance, and the dreamy atmosphere established on Diamond Eyes is near perfected on here. You get some standard, albeit amazing sounding, tracks you would get from the band but what truly makes this album along with the sound is a few of their ... read more
For a band that disappeared for around 20 years, this ain't to bad.
If you were a fan of Hum before, Inlet contains what makes their sound good while also modernizing it. The shoegaze-y dissonance sets an extremely good atmosphere to sit back and dissociate to. This record only has 8 tracks, but half of some surpass the 8-minute mark which is what makes this a lengthy listen. Because of this, the album can feel bloated at times but it never gets too intolerable.
This album is a decent ... read more
This album is indeed a diamond.
After going through their slump (and the unfortunate passing of Chi Cheng), Deftones took a break for a few years and after returning they regained their creative energy. Not only does the band have a new positive energy on this record, but they also deliver their most consistent set of songs since White Pony. They utilize the best of their established sounds and modernize it for some stellar moments. Out of all of their albums so far, this today is still ... read more
No, I would rather not an astronaut. Album is pretty good, though. Can never go wrong with shoegaze-inspired alt rock.
This one in particular took a while to grow, but I finally understand.
Saturday Night Wrist kind of marks an era in the band's career where they fell into a slump. Since White Pony, they have not found what they were missing since then. Despite the issues that arose from this era, the ethereal sound on here is out of this world. This is the first record where Deftones fully commits to a dream-like dissonance sound and they very much pulled it off on almost every track. This was different ... read more
Rock operas can be done really well, but this is not one of those cases. This is very much a mixed bag of having some concepts that work, some concepts that aged like milk, and then you have Mr Roboto. The latter is a very fun and cheesy recent guilty pleasure of mine, but that is the only thing of true value here. It is not horrendous necessarily, and the concept of rock and roll being seen as the devil's work was very relevant then, but there is too much clashing themes and dated 80s ... read more
Heather? I hardly knew her.
It has been a hot minute so I do not remember too many nitty-gritty details, but I have actually seen a rendition of this musical and the movie it was based on. Without spoiling it, it contains some decent social commentary with a story taking place in a high school setting. The only thing that matters here, however, is the music itself. The lyrics (and performances too I suppose?) are hilariously raunchy and the cast does a good job bouncing back and forth that ... read more
Still underrated to this day.
It is nearly impossible to follow-up an album like White Pony, but with Deftones' self-titled record the band made a fairly straightforward rock record in their style. While this is definitely a step down and the band does not really do too much of anything new, their performances still come through wonderfully and they got themselves a nice collection of songs on here. Chino is giving a very wailing performance on songs like Hexagram, we have nice slower ... read more
Where's Frank’s other channels?
channel ORANGE is Frank Ocean's debut album, and he made quite an entrance with this one. This is a nice little modern R&B album with some lush production, a wide variety with the sound palette, and a charming personality coming from Ocean himself. The biggest standout on here is having this go from having fairly standard songs and then being hit with the behemoth that was Pyramids. That was fucking awesome.
Aside from that, there is not ... read more
