JPEGMAFIA - All My Heroes Are Cornballs
89

I think the first track alone is enough to show how amazingly unhinged this album is.

The Cornballs album, being his third so far, in my opinion is the first time where Peggy truly balances the raw chaotic nature of his style with his fine-tuned writing and production that he is evolving over time. Some of the track titles alone are a great example of his ability to provoke and confuse, but also intrigue the listener with his unique presence in his music. With this record in particular, he ... read more

Black Country, New Road - For the first time
86

I am still processing what I listened to now that I am here writing this, but there is so much to unpack from this album's short but fair 40-minute runtime. "For the first time" is cinematic and uniquely experimental to, in my listening experience, attempt to provoke the mind's inner fragility. If you are not used to experimental rock, this will probably take some time to digest, but it is a great debut from BCNR. My favorite track on here I would say is probably Sunglasses.

JPEGMAFIA - Veteran

Dayum Peggy.

With Peggy's sophomore album, it seems that his personality, production, and unique lyricism are all finally coming together to shape up into something captivating. With tracks like 1539 N. Calvert, Thug Tears, Rainbow Six, and that one Morrissey song, we witness him delivering his style of experimental hip-hop with his immaculate ability to produce and his zero fear of coming off as jarring in his deliveries. This is not my favorite album coming from him, but this is one of ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - Black Ben Carson

Peggy yaps about the 2016 election and... Death Grips for some reason.

JPEGMAFIA (often referred to as Peggy), is currently a force to be reckoned with in the indie rap scene. Of course, we all have to start from somewhere, and Peggy's start is pretty good but definitely flawed. Even in his earliest days, he was able to prove himself as being uniquely provocative and able to excell at producing beats. The harsh industrial elements and the constant effort of being edgy while delivering ... read more

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To

Love it when the music community fixates on a random metal album each year.

A lot of metal and hardcore albums come out each year and many of them get swept under the rug and do not get the attention even if they deserve to be in the conversation. Furthmore, when metal releases are talked about, it sometimes seems like they are chosen at random and the ones that the internet hyper-fixates on might not be the best one of that year. I probably would have missed this one if a few certain people ... read more

Against All Logic - 2017 - 2019
61

Yea, I just couldn't get into this one anywhere near as much.

Whatever energy that was captured on the previous album is just not very present on here. They make an attempt to change the sound to differentiate from before, but it too often veers into more forgettable moments and a "beeps and boops" sound. It is still very competently made and there is still some enjoyable moments so I would not call this a complete miss. But man, I just do not get any feeling from before.

Strike Anywhere - Change Is a Sound
80

It's been a while since I came across a good punk album.

The sound presented here is loud and angry while also maintaining a melodic edge to where it is easily accessible, but never too melodic to the point of ever going too soft. The lyrics and themes are also anti-capitalist which is always a welcome addition. There are not too many standouts on here but the project as a whole is quite good and I would be willing to return to it once in a while. This one is quite underrated and I would ... read more

Against All Logic - 2012 - 2017

House music? Since when was House making music!?

I do not really have much to say about this one. This is purely a simplistic dance record that does almost everything right.

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch
79

Just when they ease into a sound, they completely lose their minds again.

After somewhat "returning to form" with their previous release, Death Grips once again takes a huge experimental leap with Year of the Snitch. This time, every single song is constructed from literally sampling their past songs. Somehow they have taken their own material, made it completely recognizable, and constructed an entirely new album from that. I am not sure if this is the source of it, but this record ... read more

Polyphia - New Levels New Devils
77

36 minutes of the guitarist jerking themselves off with rhythm while I stare at a two-headed tiger. Sure, I recommend it.

Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
93

This one makes me feel powerful.

After releasing The Powers That B, Death Grips seemingly did a soft reboot when releasing Bottomless Pit (perhaps hinted by the track Death Grips 2.0). What I mean by this is that this album as a whole is probably their most easily accessible since The Money Store. Obviously this is not a jab against the record since I think it has some of their best aggressive and catchy moments in their career that easily holds a candle to their Money Store days. Bottomless ... read more

Nothing - When No Birds Sang
89

Severely underrated.

When No Birds Sang is a collaboration between a shoegaze band and a grindcore band that seemingly went under the radar last year. I have not heard any previous material from either group, but it seems like they are both at their A-game here delivering a very harsh and atmospheric experience. Not to mention the twist on the heaven concept seen on here is well done and paints a vivid picture for the listener whether they pay attention to the narrative or not. Of the many ... read more

Death Grips - The Powers That B

I have went into depth on the material within the two discs on this record, so check out those reviews if you wish to see me elaborate more on those. This monstrous double album as a whole is insane, containing some of Death Grips most alien and brutal songs in their whole career. It is great, but it is held back slightly for me by two things: the sheer length and the fact that the discs sound so different from each other that it being a double album was not really necessary. Other than that, ... read more

Death Grips - Jenny Death
96

RIP Jenny (I know it's called "Jenny Death" but she's just sleeping and I hope she rests well)

The second disc of the double-length The Powers That B (again, I will cover it more when I review the LP itself). Unlike its predecessor, Jenny Death takes a completely different approach in its sound. Where NOTM was abstract and alien, this record instead is a lot more abrasive and punk-inspired. It contains a lot of the familiar elements of what makes Death Grips sound its own, ... read more

Death Grips - Niggas on the Moon
78

The forbidden album title.

Despite this being listed as its own album this is technically the first disc of a double album released in full a year later, but I will elaborate further in a later review. NOTM on its own challenges the listener by experimenting with new and unusual sounds. This time around all of the songs sample vocals from Bjork, an indie pop artist, in order to create an alien-sounding environment. The record itself is shorter than every other major Death Grips release, but ... read more

Death Grips - Government Plates
69

There are some great moments, but there is too much holding this one back.

With Government Plates, Death Grips pushes further into experimenting with sounds to create something unlike that came before it. What we get this time around is some of the group's most abrasive and experimental material to date to occasionally varying results. A good portion of this album contains some great songs, but there are a couple moments that just miss completely and it comes together into an uneven ... read more

Daft Punk - Alive 2007

Usually I am not crazy about live albums but man this one is tasty. Daft Punk and mashups is a perfect happy meal.

Death Grips - No Love Deep Web
86

Dick Grips.

After releasing their major label debut album, Death Grips nearly immediately started beef with their label. They were dropped from their label after releasing No Love Deep Web the same year despite that not being part of the deal and, you know... putting a penis on their album cover. The album itself, though, contains some great material. The production is a lot more stripped back, but this allows for the more raw and visceral moments to really get in your face. There are a few ... read more

Mystery Skulls - Forever
73

This is just a fun little edm album.

That being said, though, my experience with this has been different from anything else I have listened to so far. I recently got the privilege to see this group perform live and they played Forever specifically in full for the first time on the tour they were doing. When I first listened to this record it was not resonating with me like I thought it should, but it was when I heard it being performed in a club setting that I understood that I was looking too ... read more

Some people on this site may get upset that I did not give it a perfect score, but The Money Store is still awesome.

After making big waves with Exmilitary, Death Grips soon after came out with their major label debut. With this album, the group was able to streamline their sound but also able to maintain a certain chaotic and aggressive nature unmatched by anyone else at the time. It is equal parts fast-paced, more easily accessible, and experimental all in one tight package. Of course, if ... read more
