[THE WILDERNESS - ALBUM 11]
After much internal to-ing and fro-ing, I've decided to not do reviews of the soundtracks that I listened to during this time, because I don't think they translate equally to albums. They act more as reminders for why a certain game or movie was good, rather than as a project by themselves. Plus, there would be way too many to go through and my ranking of songs wouldn't quite match the same criteria... it would be a mess.
HOWEVER, this is ... read more

Typa shit that makes you want to do hard drugs and transcend to an alternate dimension
I remember the first time my friend showed me Sophie's music: I thought he was mad. I thought it was messy, ugly, and overly aggressive. Four years later, and I still feel the same way; except I realise that's exactly what makes it so good.
Long story short, I upped my freak game, and now I can comprehend the face of God.
Although I wouldn't listen to many ... read more

[THE WILDERNESS - ALBUM 9]
This album always reminds me of a specific art trip I took back in 2021. We trundled around in minibuses along the English south coast, sitting on the beach and making watercolours. Dungeness: it's one of the strangest places I've ever been. All the houses seem to be only one room large, the beach stretches on as a pebble-y forever. The clouds roll and tumble, always threatening rain - and often following up on it. Two lighthouses (cos why not). ... read more

[THE WILDERNESS - ALBUM 8]
I thought I disliked this more than I actually do. I think it was just the run of sub-par (for Massive Attack's quality) tracks at the beginning that always made me think this was their 'bad one'. But it isn't. I mean, yes, it's definitely their worst, but there's some really good stuff in the second half if you stick around for it.
My basic feeling around this album is that, while none of it is bad, and all of it is undeniably ... read more

The first album I ever bought for myself on vinyl.
For good reason too - as for a while I considered this to be Massive Attack's finest. And while now I have come to understand that it doesn't quite go to the same level as 'Mezzanine', I do think it retains the accolade of being their most consistent album. Every songs is great (beyond great) and the atmosphere is so chill: it's definitely their easiest lesson. This is all to say that it ... read more

Despite being probably their most iconic, 'Blue Lines' far from being my favourite Massive Attack album. That isn't to say it's not good (it's amazing), but it just isn't of the same calibre as their following two projects.
I think for me, the problem I have with most of the songs on this album is that they don't really build to anything. Massive Attack are once again doing their thing of making the most out of a song, but ... read more

I still remember the first time I listened to this album.
I was sat outside in my back garden, just sitting there, watching the roiling grey clouds overhead, feeling the biting breeze on my cheek - very triphop vibes. It must have been one of the first I had ever gone out of my way to listen to, because I could only get through half of it (even now I struggle to rawdog a whole album I haven't previously heard - I need to be moving or doing something I ... read more

[THE WILDERNESS - ALBUM 4]
I became aware of 'resonance' as a song because it was the consistent background music of a Star Wars Youtuber I used to watch when I was younger (Eckhart's Ladder fans are the real ones fr): and I loved it. I thought it had such a unique sound - which, to their credit, Home does have; their songs are always recognisable as very much theirs.
So I decided to give the album a listen. And although I remember being disappointed on my first listen, it ... read more

An album so slept on that I had to add the track list myself.
Genuinely though, this shit is so fire. I assumed it would have a lot more traction on a site like this but... Call me Indiana Jones the way I'm unearthing this crystal for you all (or Lara Croft - I'd prefer that).
All of the tracks are so unique and feel so complete. They aren't all absolutely amazing, but they all belong. They each have such an unalienable identity that it is a real ... read more

Disco Elysium is the greatest game of all time.
If you've never played it, you're missing out - it's a top down rpg (kind of) where you're a detective trying to solve a murder in a dilapidated seaside town. But oh my God the vibes are impeccable. And a lot of that is thanks to the artists behind the OST: British Sea Power.
'From The Sea To The Land Beyond' was my way of taking a piece of Martinaise (where Disco Elysium is set) ... read more

So it's 2021. Possibly.
I decide that I've had enough of just listening to what 'the man' ('The Rolling Stones') says is good, and instead I'm gonna start going down my own avenues. However, I do not decide to keep track of what I am listening to - not until 2022. And so, we enter the wilderness period of my listening career: a span of time that may or may not be longer or shorter than a year but definitely takes places before ... read more

Why did we stop using instruments? Like low-key there are so many instruments in music, why did we stop using them all? That's what 'Superfly' makes me think of. Here, we have electric bass, drum kit, an entire fucking orchestra, saxophones, synths... bro used all the instruments. And shit sounds sick. Bring it back.

Hell yeah.
Track list breakdown:
Baba O'Riley - Classic. Absolute classic. I wish the drums came in a little harder at the start though. (9/10)
Bargain - (8/10)
Love Ain't For Keeping - (7/10)
My Wife - (7/10)
The Song Is Over - Just way too long. It's a good song, but when you've heard the chorus the first fifteen times, you do begin to tire of it. (5/10)
Getting In Tune - Opening is absolutely ... read more

Suddenly, it has turned cold: the wind has become harsh and biting, the air is stiff and stale - we even had snow (for about half a day). And for some reason - quite ironically bearing in mind the title of this album - these songs have seemed to fit the atmosphere quite well. Perhaps its because of how engrained this kind of music is in my mind when it comes to Christmas - I don't know. What I do know is that I will always ... read more

Track list breakdown:
Nikes - Cool ending, but the opening is just so annoying imo. (5/10)
Ivy - Nice melody, doesn't really go anywhere (7/10)
Pink + White - And suddenly, I'm watching an aesthetic tiktok montage of an old city. Nice ending on this. (8/10)
Be Yourself - Shuddup, mom. (6/10)
Solo - Love the chorus (7/10)

I always remember thinking this album had amazing production: and it does. In terms of sheer clean-ness of sound - this is one of the best sounding things I've ever heard. Sonically, it is so clear and so diverse that it is worth listening to just for those reasons.
In terms of the actual music... not my cup of tea really. Not completely sure why, but I did not have much fun with going through this. If it was my kind of ... read more

I will always remember this as the album I unpacked my bags at uni to.
It's been a strange few weeks - new places, new people. Lots of emotions - some bad, most good. And this album has been the glue between the two halves my life has seemed to split itself into. Like I said, I'm never going to be able to separate the feeling of listening to this album from the memory of my dad getting the most emotional I've ... read more

[THE ROLLING STONE'S TOP 100 ALBUMS - ALBUM 17/ALBUM 84]
An incredibly consistent album for me, with none of the songs ever dipping below the 7/10 mark. However, although all the tracks do seem to have one thing that they've really got going for themselves (whether that's a really good riff or a catchy chorus) they often don't push themselves much further than that one singular thing, meaning there was very little here that I fell in LOVE with. However, it's nice ... read more
