Central Cee - Entrapreneur
34

Do I think this is the worst thing he's released? No. Is it boring and cookie cutter? Yea. The mix is also pretty bad, the bass is maybe 10 times louder than everything out and the hi hats sound weird and drowned out but every few beats you get the pleasure of a completely unbalanced sub bass to distort everything.

Car Seat Headrest - How To Leave Town
95

One of my favorite experiences for a CSH project and it's a strange entry for me in Will's catalogue. This project is incredibly wordy which usually is a bonus for me when it comes to Toledo's music but I this one I can't help but hang on every word he says. He splits the EP essentially in half with the track You're In Love With Me which is Car Seat at its catchiest and poppiest but begins and ends the project with 10+ minute tracks that are journeys in their own right. I enjoy this project for ... read more

Travis Scott - UTOPIA
78

A lot better than I remember from my first listen. A lot of huge grand moments mixed in with a lot of dark intimate tracks that work really well together. The songs themselves were all good for the most part, some great, some less great, but all relatively good. A step down from Astroworld for me but almost more of a step sideways, deciding to just run with something new and see how it comes out and it came out pretty good

Nas - Illmatic
94

I have no unique perspective on this album, it's just really good. The vibe is unmatched and the instrumentals go hard. While the boom bap style can get tiring and repetitive for me, these beats felt so dynamic to the point where there was never a point where I was begging to hear something new. Nas' inflections and bars were great and scrolling through the lyric pages it was hard for me to believe he fit all of those words into the track. These are mostly 4+ minute tracks of him just spitting ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Making a Door Less Open
74

I came back into this album with sour memories of it being my least favorite of the modern Car Seat Headrest discography and while I was not wrong about it being my least favorite, I found more to like than I expected. I remembered tracks like Weightlifters and Martin being highlights but tracks like Life Worth Missing and Deadlines (Hostile) slipped under my memory's radar enough to be a nice surprise in the track list.

The inconsistency of this project is my biggest gripe, in that there are ... read more

Nervous Young Men - Katzenjammer

I love me some Will Toledo. I don't love a lot of this album though. There's some bright spots but the mix is abysmal on the drums and guitar most of the time that even when what's being played is good like on the intro of Doodle, it's just a mess. Some tracks were bangers though I can't lie Chlorine had me, dare I say, tapping my damn foot. Overall I think it's on the weaker side of the NYM works but it's not as rough as the Mr. Yay Okay project.

Sufjan Stevens - Javelin
90

This is the first Sufjian Stevens project I've listened to and I'm happy that it lived up to my expectations. Stevens' vocal tone was incredible, I love his raspy, quiet, intimate singing and I think the moments where he gets louder are great as well. The instrumentals were great for the most part, my only gripe being that some of the more triumphant moments that were meant to be the highest of highs did not always land for me but they landed enough for me to love the tracks. I'm excited to ... read more

Avril Lavigne - Love It When You Hate Me
10

This song is so bad that I was playing this song on osu and I tabbed out to write this review. I never believed in the crackpot conspiracy theory that Avril Lavigne died and was replaced by a doppelganger, but this song makes me believe she was replaced by an AI pop punk generator. The song does not get better once blackbear comes in, his lyrics are just as garbage. It doesn't feel self aware enough to be fun so it just ends up being a worthless entry into Avril's discography and a stain on the ... read more

Tate McRae - THINK LATER
43

I went in expecting to despise this and honestly I was surprised I didn't. While my review still isn't positive I was surprised that the saving grace of the album was actually McRae's vocals because I personally tend to not like her voice.

I originally went in trying to put my thoughts on her vocals to the side because I know that in a lot of music I enjoy people hate the vocals, for example some don't like Billie Eilish's whispered tones that McRae was clearly influenced by but I tend to ... read more

Edit 12/8/23: 85 >> 92

When I first made my aoty account I just threw put a couple ballpark ratings and I felt like I needed to fix this one. I don't think 85 was too far off for my original feelings on the project but I think it's grown on me more since I originally rated it. There are a couple tracks that don't hit as hard for me as others but overall it's a really really good album and deserves its hype. I get the sentiment of a lot of people saying "it's just noise 🤓" ... read more

Mitski - Puberty 2
90

This is the first Mitski project I've listened to in full and I feel like a moron for waiting this long to get into her music. The way she can fit into a quiet subdued ballad with little instrumentation and also take hold of a large booming rock track without feeling like she has reinvented herself is incredible. An insanely consistent and strong project all around.

Remi Wolf - Juno
76

A lot of fun, charismatic, pop tunes. Great production throughout make even the weaker tracks very listenable for me and Remi's delivery is always fun and exciting.

HalfNoise - City Talk
78

While one note at times and sometimes can drag, most tracks on this project are incredibly dense and layered and sound incredible. Vocals across the board are great and small solo sections like the sax and guitar solos in the latter half of Coconut Island are great and euphoric.

bl4ck m4rket c4rt - Today I Laid Down
94

Reviewing this as late as I am may be affecting my opinion on the project but I frankly do not care. This is one of the most emotionally powerful pieces of work I have listened to this year, which is the year I have listened to the most music. With the context of Kai's tragic passing in mind while listening, it is impossible not to be moved immensely by the short, quiet, powerful phrases that float in and out of these tracks. While each track has only a few lines of lyrical content, nothing is ... read more

Nervous Young Men - Boxing Day
71

While I find it to be very inconsistent, I can see Will beginning to come into his own on this record more than his previous efforts and he managed to come out with at least 1 track that is viewed as one of his classics and it still has a great effect as an opener.

[ Despite the lofi recording I've become accustomed to in Will's early work, this track still sounds great. It sounds as triumphant and huge as it does on the NYM album later on in Will's discography and it is ... read more

YoungBoy Never Broke Again - Run
51

I don't think it's the worst thing youngboy has ever released but it does have some of his trademark annoyances that drop it down from being an overall great track. I actually like the variation in some of the vocal inflections and flows he switches into but there are points where it goes too far and it feels like a runaway train that he's trying to catch. I might have some bias towards youngboy because I grew up listening to him in middle and high school so I'm more numb to things that others ... read more

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
83

I enjoyed this album quite a bit but it was a bit underwhelming given my expectations going in. I don't have any super major complaints but the songs that I tended to not have a strong connection to either felt like they ended before getting a proper build up or really anything starting, I'm thinking of the track Hopedrunk Everasking specifically. For positives though, the production and mixing were great especially for the variety of styles Polachek experiments with on the project. There are a ... read more

Nervous Young Men - The Bell Jar

An inconsistent but fun outing from a youthful little William. Love Clowns In My Coffee and I'm glad it came back for Nervous Young Man. I'm glad I listened to NYM before returning to everything prior because I think it'll serve as a nice sampler of what led Will to the Car Seat Headrest era and I can definitely feel it starting to build on this project compared to the Mr. Yay Okay EP.

In my journey to understand the inner machinations of Will Toledo's mind, I have collected a list of his works spanning back to this project from his Nervous Young Men era. To be frank, I don't like it. I didn't think I would, I know Will probably hates it as he does with a lot of his old tunes but it was there so I gave it a listen. Humble beginnings for William but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he's got potential to do something great.
