Car Seat Headrest - Bodys - Live at Brooklyn Steel
88

This recording sits in a strange place for me because it sounds equal parts larger in scale to the original track as it does flatter. I know there's a bit of discussion about the vocals, and I like them, I think Will sounds great as usual and he sounds like he's having fun with it which is great. I think the live setting doesn't fit this track as well as it could fit others which makes it a strange choice for the leading single for a live album. Going back in time to the "Commit Yourself ... read more

Edit 11/26/23: 88 >> 90

Writing this review on my second full listen, this album has grown on me a lot and some tracks have made it into a nearly daily rotation. Going into a 2023 country release it is difficult to expect a lot when the trend of Bro Country has been so dominant for the past 10 years or so, but this album is an example of why not to give up on genres you think you wouldn't like. I went in expecting some tracks that would be tolerable rather than bad and I got songs that ... read more

Snow Strippers - Night Killaz Vol. 1

Dreamy and hypnotic and I love it. Every song feels like the song that's playing at a party in a movie where the main character goes into the bathroom and the song is like muffled and they're like staring in the mirror and then someone knocks and like breaks them out of it. This is my introduction to Snow Strippers and I'm loving what I'm hearing.

Bladee & Ecco2k - Amygdala

Ecco said it best, iconic

Bladee - Gluee
80

I consider myself a fan of bladee but this album doesn't click for me. Not to say it won't in the future because there are things I like about it but not enough. I feel like a lot of these ideas sound fleshed out and bladee's delivery on the intro track surprised me a bit because he sounded more awake than normal, not that I don't like his sleepier flows, but I enjoy when he gets amped up once in a while. For whatever reason the whole thing doesn't come together for me yet.

Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever

A great album that I've wanted to get around to writing a review on for quite a while because I feel like it gets neglected a bit. The production is incredible even with the great variation between the styles of some tracks but the album feels more dynamic and flexible than messy and unfocused. A small problem of mine was the placement of some tracks felt strange not necessarily because of the sound of the track but the themes behind it. This is mostly a problem early in the track list with ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
89

This review is from my second or third listen I'm not really sure but I think my thoughts have been fainirly consistent on this project and I still love it as much as I did when I first listened.

This was the first album of Kendrick's that I listened to as soon as it came out and is still the only one that I have listened to fully because I'm holding out for a good day to do some big time reviews.

From the insane drum break on "United In Grief", I knew I was going to love this ... read more

It is 1 in the morning and I had no plans on writing a review for this album but sometimes life gives you lemons and you turn to a munch.

The crazy thing is that this is one of my lowest rated projects I think and I really wouldn't be mad if I heard one of these songs again. It isn't like my other low rated albums where I would pull the fire alarm to escape the sound of it because none of the songs are long enough for me to really get offended by their presence. None of the songs are great, ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - The Heart Part 5
100

I'll eventually write a review of Mr. Morale but I hear this song more often than I listen to that album front to back so I just have it on my mind. This song is unreal and set the expectations for Mr. Morale as high as they can possibly be. Kendrick's flows are sharp and catchy the entire time and there isn't a wasted line. The whole song is a bold underlined italic statement and as a single before the album it is just perfectly placed. It also feels like a conclusion of sorts especially the ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Nervous Young Man
85

I think this album slipped by me in the phase where I was first getting into Car Seat Headrest mostly because of its 2 hour runtime but I'm glad I came back to it. I'm a big fan of Will Toledo's early, rougher, production style, not to say that I'm not a fan of the cleaner studio albums, but the low fi quality has grown on me a lot and this project is amazing in that regard. Despite the simpler, harsher production, the tracks are still dynamic and don't feel like they're held back at all by the ... read more

100 gecs - 10,000 gecs
89

I've messed with my score on this album a bit since my first listen but it just keeps growing on me the more I listen.

This was the first gecs project I listened to and I went in fully expecting garbage to be fully honest. In my eyes, 100 gecs were a laughing stock who put out music that was mish mashed together and annoying, but I never listened to them, I just thought that and I don't know why.

Now my view on 100 gecs is that they're one of the most endearing pop duos of all time and I have ... read more

7th Jet Balloon - Pleasant, Sadness, And…
88

I love the sound of this project and I've been listening to it daily since my first listen. The guitar and drum work is superb and I love the vocal tones used throughout the tracklist. Within 5 short tracks there is still time for the pace to slow down and speed up and get really big and really small and I just love it. There is a language barrier that doesn't let me dive into the lyrics as much as I would like to but I don't think it takes away from my enjoyment at all. A great, quick, emo ... read more

Danny Brown - Quaranta
84

Went into this album not expecting Danny Brown to be so laid back and calm but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Brown feels very introspective and like he's taking a breather especially after his "Scaring the hoes" collab project with JPEG earlier this year. Despite a lack of raw energy there is effort and passion put into these tracks and incredible production across the board. I guess I'm going to need to work my way backwards through Danny's catalogue at this point to see what ... read more

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!

Not beating the Fantano with hair allegations this time

In reality though, being genuine, this album is incredible. I have dipped my toes into the "drone" genre before and I haven't fully grasped it but this time it just clicked. Multiple times where I got chills over my entire body and one time that I recall in the final track "Like Antennas To Heaven.." around the 5:30 mark of the track, where my fight or flight was set off and I felt like a dog who just got woken up from ... read more

100 gecs - 100 gecs

I think my gec bias might influence my score a bit but I think seeing where they went with this sound makes it easier for me to understand what's going on here. I see little pieces of things that get reincorporated later, sadly no ska, and I can see myself giving this a 0 when it came out in 2016 but now with my brain rot almost at full completion I still think this is a nice little project that is enjoyable to those already indoctrinated into the cult of geccing.

100 gecs - 1000 gecs
87

Realized I never wrote a formal review of this album so I thought I would now just to have my thoughts on record.

I'm a huge gecs fan, ever since 10,000 gecs dropped earlier this year, I haven't been able to stop listening and I find myself enjoying what they do more and more every day but I don't wanna touch my rating too much cuz I feel like I'll just be coping.

I think the highlights on this album are incredible. I rated a song a 100/100 that has the phrase "Piss Baby" in the ... read more

Deftones - Around the Fur
91

I think the only track I had heard from this album before this listen was "My Own Summer", and for what it was when I heard it then I thought it was a pretty cool heavier song but I really didn't know much about Deftones. I was very pleasantly surprised and I can't wait to listen to more of their stuff, specifically White Pony because I steal all of my opinions from Anthony Fantano.

Seeing the genre tags, I was a bit on edge but more just confused because I feel like "Nu ... read more

Jonas Brothers - The Album
40

Coming back to the Jonas Brothers after not being a child I wonder what happened. I still bump their "Year 3000" cover and even "Burnin' Up" from time to time but no neurons fire in my brain, I just operate on pure nostalgia and I think that's where this album loses me. There is almost nothing charming about this album in a way that would remind you why the Jonas Brothers ever got famous.

To start, Nick's vocals tend to be incredibly annoying on this project and there's ... read more

Drake - For All The Dogs
55

I'm very torn on this album because I genuinely don't know if any of my ratings will stay the same on a second listen. I've tried listening to this album twice since release and the first time I hated almost everything and was groaning at every other line that Drake threw out. This time through though I was laughing and it didn't feel like it was at Drake.. most of the time. This didn't really mean I loved every song but it made them much less unbearable than my first time listening through. ... read more

AJR - The Maybe Man
21

I hate to pile on to hating things that are easy to hate but AJR makes it so easy sometimes.

I'll start off with some genuine positive things I have to say about this album before I go off on a rant that is no different from any other AJR review you might find elsewhere. Looking at the user scores there's an incredibly clear outlier on this album called "The Dumb Song" and it's a genuinely dumb fun kinda song that is fairly inoffensive and probably one of AJR's best. It doesn't have ... read more
