A Danny album executively produced by Q-Tip (who also has vocals), with features from RTJ, Obongjayar, Peggy, Blood Orange, and Consequence? Of course it's amazing.
Top three favourite songs: Combat, N Spiritual, 3 Tearz
Least favourite song: Bell of the Beast
I remember disliking this album for a while due to it being rated higher than ATCQ's album on RYM's 2016 chart. At some point I caved in and actually listened to it. Ended up loving it, and that's how one of my favourite rap albums ever was introduced to me from hate listening.
AE is basically an evolved XXX, so of course it's amazing.
Top three favourite songs: Ain't It Funny, Today, When It Rain
Least favourite song: White Lines
Almost 20 years after legendary rap boyband A Tribe Called Quest's inception, they released their first and only project since 1998. With one of the most (deservingly) renowed discographies in all of music, consisting of multiple records considered to be among the best of their genre, some of their members having been at odds for almost a decade, their last two records being considered flops by many, and one of their members tragically passing away during the album's production, all the odds ... read more
The pinnacle of both Tip and Phife's chemistry and hip-hop as a whole.
Top four favourite songs: The Chase, Pt. II, We Can Get Down, God Lives Through, Steve Biko (Stir It Up)
Least favourite song: Midnight Marauders Tour Guide, because every song here is a 10/10
Not ATCQ's best, but it's still an undeniable jazz-rap classic. If Phife was on more songs, it'd probably get the 100.
Top three favourite songs: Show Business, Jazz (We've Got), Excursions
Least favourite song: Butter
Not as refined as ATCQ's later work, and it lacks enough Phife to be a great introduction to Tribe's discography, but there's a song dedicated to watching your cholesterol. How could you not love this album?
Top three favourite songs: I Left My Wallet In El Segundo, Footprints, Can I Kick It?
Least favourite song: Youthful Expression
Great verses from Pusha, production by an all-star cast featuring Pharrel Williams, Ye, 88-Keys, and more; really solid features ranging from Jay-Z, Ye, Kid Cudi, Don Toliver, Labrinth, etc. What more can I ask for?
Top three favourite songs: Rock N Roll, I Pray For You, Dreamin Of The Past
Least favourite song: Call My Bluff
Pretty solid vocal jazz; not one of my favourite Sinatra records. Great highlights, though.
Top three favourite songs: Don't Sleep In The Subway, Some Enchanted Evening, The World We Knew (Over And Over)
Least favourite song: You Are There
I remember listening to this because I was so down bad for new music on March 8th after VULTURES 2 didn't drop, and I mean, it was okay. Rough night, though. I didn't get to review this on the 8th because I crashed out a little after finishing the album and I ended up forgetting to review it until now. Anyway, Ariana has a good voice, and the production on the lead single is a standout, but the album as a whole is boooriiing. The best part of my listening experience was when autoplay played ... read more
Never thought I'd see Future carry a Metro collab because most of the album had some "Metro Boomin type beat" beats, so the production sounds kind of generic and is levels below Heroes & Villains. But Future had solid performances throughout, and all the features were highlights on their respective songs (especially ######## on Like That).
Top three favourite songs: Like That, Everyday Hustle, Young Metro
Least favourite song: Magic Don Juan (Princess Diana)
"You know who you is? You the greatest rapper ever" ...He isn't wrong.
Top six favourite songs: 30, DNA, Monopoly, Pac Blood, XXX, Party All the Time
Least favourite song: Bassline (cop-out, I know)
One of the more fun albums you'll hear in your lifetime.
Top three favourite songs: It Never Happened, Stereologue, A Night Alone
Least favourite song: Benthic Zone Parking Lot (cop-out, I know)
Some of the best pop I've heard in a fat minute. Hell, it even made me enjoy a Central Cee feature. Y'know, maybe British people aren't so bad... Thanks for opening my eyes, PinkPantheress.
Top four favourite songs: Mosquito, Capable of love, Another life, Ophelia
Least favourite song: Bury me
A mixed bag, but unfarily judged.
Ye's writing is at an all-time low here, with most lines either being about him being horny or mentioning Jewish people without a punchline. However, there are still some good verses from him on tracks such as KEYS TO MY LIFE, BURN, BEG FORGIVENESS, PROBLEMATIC, and a couple others.
I was kinda confused when it was announced that Ye was doing a full-on collab album with Ty Dolla $ign, as I never held him to the same regard as a Jay-Z or Kid Cudi even before ... read more
I wasn't following Lupe when DMIZ released, so when I saw it on his Spotify page, I was admittedly a little disappointed to see him do drill music (nothing wrong with it, but drill isn't my cup of tea), so when I pressed play and heard horns after Ayesha Jaco's intro, lets just say I was pleasantly surprised. DMIZ isn't as lyrically dense as a T&Y or Drogas Wave, but it's still one of Lupe's best written records (which is saying a lot).
Top three favourite songs: MS. MURAL, ON FAUX NEM, ... read more
Maybe the most lyrically dense album by a mainstream hiphop artist ever. Its without a doubt, Lupe's magnum opus and in my top ~3 favourite rap albums ever.
Top FOUR favourite songs: Prisoner 1 & 2, Mural, Adoration of the Magi, T.R.O.N.
It's kinda like F&L, but just way better. Go Baby is the only song where its outdatedness does somewhat hinder my enjoyment, but it's still a fun outro, and I wouldn't say that it's aged as poorly as say Good Life on Graduation by Ye.
Top three favourite songs: Little Weapon, Hello/Goodbye, Streets on Fire
Least favourite song: Go Baby (excluding interludes)
Lupe's writing gets much better later in his career, but F&L is a good start, and the production is some of the best you'll find on a Lupe album.
Top three favourite songs: The Instrumental, Hurt Me Soul, Daydreamin'
Least favourite song: Real (not including Outro)
