texturally unique but unfortunately a little too long without too much variation between tracks. the experimentation is very interesting however and some of these tracks literally sound like dirt.
not really ambient but very droney and falls into categories of noise, this is by far one of the coolest things i've listened to. it's a noise album that doesn't get quieter unless you turn the volume to 0 because of the high frequency of it's sound. it contradicts everything noise music tends to be, ear splitting walls of static like sound that illustrate a mountainous mechanical force staring down at you are replaced with what could be heard as the sound of glass. fragile noise. yes it sounds ... read more
extremely important work of noise music but also an extremely cool and uniquely engaging project. for an album that is literally 5 guitars droning for an hour it's texture and non conventional flow of sound really draws me in. not to mention THIS CAME OUT IN 1975. EXTREMELY ahead of it's time.
hazy and psychedelic, love is a stream is a 44 minute shoegaze monolith that washes over you with it's heavenly soundscapes. not only is it's beauty completely one of a kind, but the emotions jean cantu pulls off with this piece is just... staggering to say the least. it's hard to put into words not only how much this album means to me, but also how fantastic of a work this truly is and the emotions it can draw out of me. the nostalgic memories of a past love are definitely float through my ... read more
soul crushingly empty. minimalistic yet extremely potent. outrageously underheard.
extremely strange even for a nicholas jaar project. the subtlety of the sounds gives the songs a glass-like fragility that gives me the image of a wire statue when i hear it. though a beautiful frame it may be, it's brittle and extremely fragile. "Mud" is superb.
william basinski's pieces are very difficult for me to rate. for one thing he's an extreme minimalist, so a lot of his pieces are very very similar with a few minor differences in composition to differentiate them. it is for that reason that rating the disintegration loops is especially difficult since they are in essence the same project stretched out into parts. all of them have a similar yet unique tone to them that when put together unravels a massive auditory painting of basinski's view of ... read more
midtown 120 blues is a lot like an exhibit at a museum of house. it's a painting of an era. a point in time rendered in pristine simplicity, it's beauty stems from it's lack of excess, the only things used are the ones absolutely nessicary to complete it's auditory collage. this album doesn't sound like most deep house because it's not meant to. it's meant to preserve the legacy of the origin of deep house and showcase Terre's love for the genre and culture behind House. serene house music.
similar to radio amor the textures are fascinating on this, with some of hecker's most ambitious and beautiful compositions to date. steller atmosphere as well, it just has the usual hecker problem of barely clicking with me
not much else to say other than viscously boring. ferociously uninteresting. brutally uninteresting.
extremely hard to sit through for some reason i can never get past track 4 but when i do its pretty good
the field recordings mixed in makes the album for me. gives hecker's drones the well needed texture and emotion they rightfully deserve considering how detailed they are!
never been a huge fan of tim hecker but this is somehow unbearable to me. it has its moments but mostly feels lost and directionless without a real focus on tone or emotion.
wonderfully melancholic. it's simplistic but it's complexity comes from the tones and how stars managed to create a warming sombre feeling through these simplistic drones.
stars of the lid are great. i love them. their debut however really isn't anything to write home about, there are a bunch of notable tracks in here like "Tape Hiss Makes Me Happy" and "The Swell Song" but the sound isn't terribly original on this and they haven't really found their niche in the ambient scene yet.
traumprinz is one of the most exciting electronic muscicians working in the edm scene today, but this really did not hit the mark for me. there are amazing tracks here but this thing is 3 HOURS LONG!!!! 3 hours realllly pushes it for any type of edm and it just doesn't have the variety to keep me going.
though i love phil and his efforts are very personal and greatly inspiring to me, the glow pt 2 was the first vinyl i ever owned and microphones in 2020 was the first 40 minute drone i ever fell in love with, i've never thought too highly of this album. it's just very middling to me. i've heard better drone, better psych folk from phil himself and i don't find too many of the lyrics all that personally relatable.
legitimately mind blowing sample usage and a unique atmosphere that makes me picture an antique store when i hear it. no this isn't a joke this is actually antique store music. try it! maybe you'll hear what i hear too.
