Hozier - Hozier

I have to give credit where credit is due, the guy is super talented and absolutely is a great singer and is also a pretty good songwriter. However I can't help but feel like while so many elements seem to be working in its favor, I can't help but feel that this is just a bit overrated. There's a handful of tracks that I enjoy and I definitely see why this works for a lot of people. I just feel like it doesn't do all that much for me as a whole. There's tracks where I feel like despite a lot of ... read more

Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell
28

I love Depeche Mode but this one does not do it for me and I really only enjoy maybe a couple tracks here, especially Just Can't Get Enough. I'll give credit where credit is due, that song still goes hard and I feel like I would've liked this more if this album had been more in line with that sound than this really bland mess that we get for the most part

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
96

Truly one of the loudest albums I've ever heard, maybe even loud enough for a deaf person to hear. We'll literally never know because you can't even hear it. This was a favorite of mine in high school and I'm happy to say that returning to it years later it still holds up and feels as electric and explosive and fun as it did the first time. Shuffle this album with Soundtracks For The Blind by Swans and you get a concept album for Helen Keller.

Favorite tracks: Millionaire, No One Knows, Song ... read more

twenty one pilots - Clancy

Some fun ideas and tracks here and there but overall very messy and I find myself being largely on the fence with it

AJR - The Click
12

Like many on this site, AJR is a band that I just cannot stand and there's always just been a quality about it that just infuriates me and I can't quite put my finger on it. If this is your thing, I'm truly happy for you that you get something out of this, because this is one of the few things that when I hear it I physically feel upset for seemingly no reason

death's dynamic shroud - 失われた時REGRET [Regret When It Was Lost]
89

The vaporwave genre has long been a guilty pleasure of mine and I just recently started jumping into a few DDS albums and this one is definitely one of my personal favorites. It just captures the feeling of missing somebody without having to outright say it explicitly, allowing the listener to project their own experiences on top of it

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯ A♯ ∞ [CD Version]
90

This reminds me of when my car was on fire and there was no driver at the wheel

death's dynamic shroud - 世界大戦OLYMPICS [World War Olympics]
80

Had this on the other day and just started crying for no reason

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
93

This album feels like they're fully embracing everything that worked about Kaleidoscope and expanding on it and the result is actually really great

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!
98

Everybody gangsta until they find out that they don't sleep anymore on the beach

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Kaleidoscope
82

Yo I can't believe they ripped off The Weeknd on this. Smhing my gosh dang head 😩

I am really digging the added guitar effects and electronic elements. These songs feel like they have an almost psychedelic edge to them that wasn't there on the last couple albums and it just feels more lively

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Join Hands
52

While I appreciate the increased amount of dissonance on a lot of these tracks, something about it starts to feel slightly grating the longer it runs on for me, causing me to feel somewhat on the fence. Still excited to hear where they go from here

Tally Hall - Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum
43

This was such a frustrating listen. I had this recommended by a friend who absolutely loved this album and obviously this is all just my opinion and art is subjective, but something about this album just felt off for me. Sure it's a blend of genres I've not necessarily heard elsewhere, but I found myself cringing more often than I found myself enjoying it, and it's something I can't quite articulate or put my finger on, but it just rubs me the wrong way for most of the runtime. It's like it's ... read more

Little Simz - Sometimes I Might Be Introvert
100

Track after track this album never stops being just incredible. In my eyes this is the kind of album that will be considered a classic and it really feels like Simbi at the top of her game. This album is at the same time so varied sonically and yet remains cohesive and consistent in its vision and direction from the impeccable flows to the powerful lyrics to the instrumentals with amazing soul samples and massive strings that make it feel larger than life, to even the interludes which I think ... read more

Wow I've been sleeping on this stuff

Pearl Jam - Ten
57

I think calling this album "ten" is an overly ambitious title. I'd have called it "five" personally.
Jokes aside, Pearl Jam is a "love them or hate them" kind of band and I personally find myself in the camp that feels that Pearl Jam is one of the most overrated bands. Like most Pearl Jam haters, I don't have much of an issue with the instrumentals or the mix or overall sound of this album, it's mostly to do with the fact that the vocals just don't do it for me. ... read more

Slint - Spiderland
95

This has long been a frustrating album for me because I always had a hard time fully getting it to click with me. And it sucked because I wanted so badly to like it. I was talking to one of my friends who was saying that this is maybe their favorite album so I was talking about my frustration with it and they said that it's one of the only albums they can't multitask to. I felt kinda dumb because pretty much all the times I've given this a shot has been on really busy days at work. So I started ... read more

The Cure - Pornography
92

Crippling loneliness in audio form. If Disintegration is the breakup album, this is the wallowing in despair album. This is The Cure at their coldest and most nightmarish and it's a journey that takes you through some really dark places that makes me go "who hurt Robert Smith?" I think my favorite tracks are probably the opener with One Hundred Years as well as The Hanging Garden, The Figurehead and the title track. I think I can easily say that this is one of the great gothic rock ... read more

The Cure - Disintegration

I am wholeheartedly convinced that this is the greatest breakup album ever conceived. This album has been a welcomed friend through pretty much every heartbreak I've been through and has not let me down. Every track feels essential and the atmosphere is just immaculate and I can just get lost in the washy synth strings and the reverb drenched drums and the watery and dreamy flanged guitar tones. Right from the get-go this album hits you with Plainsong which starts with these quiet wind chimes ... read more

Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream

I've always been a pretty big fan of The Cure and after diving into Swans and really enjoying the goth inspired stuff, I wanted to get more into early goth and I've heard good things about this band so I'm checking it out. And yeah this is a solid debut. The production definitely lines up with a lot of the other goth stuff I've heard from this era, i.e. Joy Division and The Cure's first few albums, but there's some really nice things that show up that I think feel unique to them. Obviously ... read more
