I think the band gets much better as they go on and master their craft but man, if this is considered to be the first true death metal album, then the genre was off to an amazing start. My favorite track is probably Evil Dead
While not quite as solid track for track as Beelzebubba in my opinion, this still has a lot of the group's best tracks. Yes it's pretty stupid at times but isn't that sort of the point?
Ok I may be biased because I'm not like the other people here in the trailer park, but my namesake aside I think this is a hilarious and criminally underrated punk album in the grand scheme of things. It's genuinely such a fun time and I think it strikes such a great balance between absurdist humor and the occasional political satire.
While not my favorite release from these guys, they still give yet another solid record with some great harmonies which is an interesting new direction for them. I think the album is at its best when it leans into that but the jam sections are also a pretty good time for the most part
This album is abrasive and energetic and generally just a great time
Listen, if you know me, you'll know that I do enjoy some Beach Boys from time to time and I generally will defend them. For the most part it's just fun summer vibes with some pretty cool harmonies and frankly I don't think it needs to be more than that, nor is it generally trying to. I'll even defend Kokomo in all its 80s cheese. It's a fun and catchy tropical sounding pop song and I don't think it needs to be anything more than that. THIS on the other hand was ... read more
My gosh, such a heart wrenching album. I found this just trying to find some good sad music and I definitely found it here but what I was not prepared for was for it to make me start sobbing at work
You call them crazy straws... To me they're just straws. Just a glimpse into my fricked up mind
While this record is rough around the edges in a lot of parts as debut albums have a tendency to be, and slightly less consistent than the next two albums, lots of my favorite TMBG songs are on here, especially the opening track Everything Right Is Wrong Again, Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head, She's An Angel and Nothing's Gonna Change My Clothes. A really fun debut that really feels like they know what they're doing but are about to hit their stride
They Might Be Giants were one of the first bands I ever loved. When I was very small and was starting to listen to music for the first time, my parents understandably didn't want to have to deal with annoying brainrot kids music and instead just had me always listening to whatever they actually listened to, whether it was The Cure or The Beatles or Ozzy Osbourne. There still was children's music growing up but any that was there was still always filtered down to what they actually ... read more
Now this is a great album to listen to on a date! Guaranteed they will call you back if you play this on a date.
This is such a visceral and simultaneously beautiful live album, one of the handful of live albums that I actually find myself returning to. Really interesting to hear a lot of the tracks from The Great Annihilator and Soundtracks, a lot of them significantly different from their studio counterparts. I actually think I might prefer this album's version of Yum Yab Killers, mostly because I think it's a little bit more balanced and clear in the mix so I get a lot more of Jarboe. I also ... read more
While I slightly prefer a lot of the tracks on the album they made after this, Bridge Over Troubled Water, I have to give this album credit for being a lot more ambitious and for taking a lot more risks when it comes to folk music and the duo's sound in general. I also think that track for track, this album feels a little bit more tonally consistent and contains and it flows a little bit better, even if I do think their next album packs a few bigger punches emotionally
This was one that had to grow on me, which is something I've found with a lot of folk. It's a genre I'm less familiar with generally and have only started enjoying and appreciating more in the last few years. There is a quality to this album that is really hard to define. Maybe it's the context of Nick Drake's life, career and death which came way too soon, or maybe it's the simplicity of it or a combination or something else entirely but regardless, the end result is a beautiful folk album ... read more
Sunday Morning might be one of the most beautiful and entrancing songs I've heard. Just sends me to another place. Venus In Furs is also one of my favorites and I love the droning instrumentation behind the eerie chords. The track Heroin is also just such an experience from start to finish and just feels massive especially for its time. If I had to pick a least favorite track, it's probably The Black Angel's Death Song. I appreciate what it's going for but for me personally at the current ... read more
Definitely a lot heavier than their other big album and I think this sometimes gets slept on just because of how popular their first album is. Heck even I just kinda gave this a passive listen the first time around because the first album was all I cared about. But this feels like such an amazing step in the band's evolution that I think stands among their best
I had a pretty big prog phase when I was about 16 and while some of it has soured on me a little bit over the years, returning to this album still feels fresh and exciting. It's beautiful and complex and so well assembled all around. Really the only qualm I have is that I think Moonchild drags just a bit. Not so much that it drastically affects the experience of the album, but I just have always felt like the improv jam bits, while they aren't actively unpleasant and have some interesting ... read more
A dark and depraved journey through a person's mental deterioration. Over the course of the runtime this album hardly lets up and when it does on tracks like A Warm Place, it feels earned and well thought out. This album is full of pummeling industrial soundscapes that strike the perfect balance between harsh noise and sounds you can groove/headbang to. It is absolutely a brutal and disgusting experience at times, but doesn't it make you feel better?
When he said "and oh, if you're tryna hit a lick on the T.D, R.B.C, Scotiabank, R.B.C, C.I.B.C, P.C Financial
Holler at me" man I felt that
