EXPERIMENTAL RAP IS JPEG's attempt at taking the throne of experimental hip-hop by force, and completely makes a fool of himself in the process. Subverted my expectations in every way. I was lowk terrified seeing SURF GANG on this. It's really hard to have this miasmic direction they take be intoxicating instead of mind-numbing, and the singles didn't help quell the fear, but for the most part, they keep it pretty potent. I was expecting to like Pompeii more, but the production started losing steam halfway through and MIKE struggled to keep up at that point. Death Grips' most varied album and it unfortunately suffers for it. It has some of their best executions of the blend of noise punk and industrial hip-hop the band has developed since Jenny Death bundled in together with tracks like Warping and Eh that remind me of The Money Store and NLDW, and those are my least favorite albums from them. At least the former bangs to high heaven.
Stitched together with club bangers/slow jams and more introspective cuts, leading it to never commit to either. He does better with the former, but it annoys me that it's grafted onto what was supposed to be this heartbreaking story about him and his mom that even on its own falls short of what it could've been.
