I didn't put huge expectations on this album, because truthfully there are very few albums that are worth a 6+ year wait, and the ones that are are usually masterpieces (like Black Messiah). I was mainly just happy that Normani could finally release an album, and interested to hear what she had been sitting on for years. It's cool. Very stripped back compared to Something to Feel and Juicebox - my favorites from him - and therefore not quite as exciting.
I almost gave up on hip hop for this year but this album reeled me back in. Mick Jenkins went OFF on this.
Chloe x Halle's "Ungodly Hour" felt like a natural progression from their first album that showed that the "kids" had grown, writing-wise, production-wise, and subject matter-wise. "In Pieces", however, sounds like a side-step, or even a step backwards. It's not bad, but it's not special and it doesn't give us a clear picture of who Chloe is - stylistically and musically - apart from Halle. Been waiting for a full length project since I heard "3:33am" back in 2017. I was not disappointed.
