It's the black sheep of The Fall of Troy discography, but as someone who discovered the band in 2009 and was immersed in that world of prog-tinged post-hardcore, this was (and remains) great, the sound of a band attempting--and mostly succeeding--to write a great rock record rather than a scrappy, mathy underground hit. Do I prefer Doppelganger and Manipulator? Of course. But this is still so solid.
This would probably be the best Sabbath record if 'After Forever' wasn't painfully Christian.
With the possible exception of 'Love Story' (which sounded like a rejected track from Black Country, New Road's last album even before I saw it was co-written by Georgia Ellery), this is much more interesting than Geordie Greep's work in the post-black midi landscape. And even that track has some neat mood shifts.
