Tom Macdonald’s latest attention ploy FACTS is made all the more nonsensical by a startling verse from political commentator Ben Shapiro that is baffling to the degree that it’s almost reminiscent of something from Flex Entertainment.
There comes a point in It’s Sorted where the charm of “America’s Local Band” Cheekface’s dry, ostensibly millennial-centric lyrics pretty much wears off, but after that you’re at least still left with a fairly competent indie rock record.
The likeable politics of Randy McNally (No Love Like Christian Hate) is kinda the one saving grace of the EP but you can’t rely on one (awful) song’s pretty good political messages to carry the music itself- and I don’t think these limp, grating rock ‘anthems’ could be carried by anything in the first place.
JIGOKU 6 is probably Mori’s least comically bad project yet but that doesn’t mean it’s not just bad in general.
If you like music that’s even remotely worth giving a fuck about, then To Whoever Wants To Hear’s stale alt-pop will sorely disappoint you.
From where I’m standing, Like..? feels like the same song repeated several times over.
There’s good fun to be had within Real Cultural Shit’s electronic funk.
Between the shallow protest anthems, the songs that would have been great had the band come up with them a couple of decades earlier and all the other stuff that barely merits a flippant “eh”, Saviors sounds about as cliche and apathetic as you’d expect a Green Day record to sound in 2024.
Fugue (Bin Song) sounds very similar to most of what Squid usually put out and that’s absolutely fine by me. It ain’t broke yet, so no need to fix it!
The Krusty Pack is a fun novelty EP that also holds its head above water musically!
One Night/All Night has a killer groove and some solid, very Tame Impala-y Tame Impala vocals - it’s a great first look at the duo’s upcoming album.
…Oh right, Generator too! I wasn’t too hot on this one at the start- I got a lot of Stress 2 vibes- but that almost Bond movie esque string section is amazing and really carries the song when it comes in.
update: generator is the shit
My Life (Is The Worst Life Ever) tries to send-up both emo and pop punk and doesn’t quite nail either.
Update! Having returned to this for the album I now think it’s actually one of the worst comedy songs I’ve heard. It’s so abrasively wrong… just attempting to parody a bunch of stuff that vaguely has something to do with emo music at the same time doesn’t work. Doesn’t help that it’s deeply unpleasant on the ears. Perhaps intentionally so, but ... read more
I keep coming back to this song just to check it really was as bad as I remember. It has not disappointed me yet.
Not only is Run The Jewels a lot of fun to listen to in its own right, it also kicked off one of rap’s greatest collaborations.
World Wide Pop is still a fun ride, even if Superorganism sound seems a little safer this time around.
Hawaii: Part II tends to be a little too over-the-top and not all that coherent instrumentally either, save for a few bright spots.
I’m not too fond of the falsetto occupying the chorus of The Pain, but it’s pretty good other than that.
