I like this album but I wish Megan was better at beat selection because that's usually what makes or breaks each song on here. Her rapping is reliably solid but it's a coinflip whether the production on any song will be great or mind-numbing
Could do without the meme stuff and some of the "this is loud btw" compression (or distortion? idk) because my ears Exploded and I died but the production is undeniable and the melodies here are so sick. First 3 songs especially
To me, JPEGMAFIA is the single most impressive artist of the last decade. Since maybe 2010, is it fair to say we watched hip hop evolve and branch out more rapidly than any genre ever has? An artist in hip hop could blow up overnight after inventing a new sound or having a massively popular single and fizzle out just as quickly if they failed to stay interesting or creative. An album would come out that opened new doors for the genre, then in no time artists would leapfrog off of that album, ... read more
Been a minute since I listened to this in full. Revisiting it and damn! I Appear Missing is still flawless. Love how catchy this whole album is. Making an album where every single song is great seems to be a proven strategy ๐ง
Even the outro, man. The way it builds so slowly that you don't even really clock that the guitars are going Ballistic until they drop out and that pulsing bass kicks in... ๐
Pretty cool, I think I see the vision. Walks a fine line between being laid back and breezy in a cool way, and being nonchalant in a boring way. Sometimes tripping a little (for example Any Day, Epiphany, and a couple others are too sleepy) but mostly managing to stay engaging. I like it
Love this album, revisited it fully today because a while back someone on this website sent it to me as a rec. What struck me the most about it is what the implication of this being "space rock" is. The music is sweet, slightly droning, calming, euphoric at times, and introspective. That these are the qualities of a genre associated with space is a very cute reminder of what outer space often represents: hope, wonder, awe, love, and human achievement. I'm not a big Project Hail ... read more
You already know it's good. It's not quite WYP but it's still an AOTY contender etc etc whatever, but the album cover?? Instant favorite, one of the best I've ever seen. Shit had me googling the photographer, something I've never done before. It's Rachell Smith btw, though there was a whole team behind the shoot
Dorian Electra is awesome and this is an incredibly fun concept: make your self-titled a collection of covers of songs that have shaped who you are. I don't know if the covers are always that good though. I listened to this twice, both times listening to each song side-by-side with its original, and I think Dorian's good taste works against them, because a lot of these songs are tough to do justice (besides the Shakira one, oh my god what an unbearable song). I also was disappointed ... read more
"Absolutely love the energy on this album. "Energetic" is the #1 thing you want an album in this genre to be, and this is loud, chaotic, and noisy in a really focused way. The production is BRIGHT, varied, and detailed"
That's what I wrote for Revengeseekerz last year and it's kinda funny to me how well that applies here too. Albums like this have turned me into a rage believer. The song transitions are on point here, and I don't think this project would be ... read more
Haven't kept up with galen tipton's stuff that much since hearing her goddexx EP in 2020. Just an album here and there - Ungoliant, You Like Music, and nightbath. But god damn ! I gotta change that. This is nonstop, energetic fun. I feel like galen often comes up with covers for her projects that set an impossibly high bar for the music, then usually somehow meets that bar. The intro song on this is my favorite by far, unbelievably catchy with spastic production. She's really ... read more
Somehow they have anti-synergy. They're bringing out the worst in each other. So boring
It kind of lacks ambition compared to the best stuff they've put out so far, which makes it disappointing even if I still like quite a few songs on here
Guy who forgot about Song Machine: This is their best since plastic beach! ๐ผ
If you were paying attention to hip hop at all in 2018/2019 you knew IDK. And I'd wager you probably approached his music the same way I did. I heard Digital as a single, loved it, and was kind of let down by Is He Real? I checked out projects like IDK & Friends, USEE4YOURSELF, and Simple, and never took away more than a couple songs. Those songs were great, but after 2022 I had kind of written him off. He lacked an identity as an artist and hadn't shown himself capable of putting ... read more
This guy and IDK occupy the same space in my mind, where there are some songs by them that I love, but I don't feel like they have a strong identity. What is a Baby Keem song? Is it the goofy stuff? (House Money) Is it the gritty stuff? (Circus Circus Free$tyle) Is it the poppy stuff? (Dramatic Girl) Is it the sentimental stuff? (Good Flirts) What does he uniquely offer as an artist and a rapper?
I think it's the strained baby voice, but that's just not enough. Maybe Baby ... read more
