Ian Mackaye was able to make the lamest shit imaginable sound fun. Songs about how sex and drugs are bad for your mind, the writing feels like it comes straight out of a video a health teacher would make you watch to warn you of the dangers of rebellious teenage behavior. Mayhem exists to much of the world as a window into a mysterious, bizarre and unfamiliar world. Never will this album be separated from the context in which it was made. an album respected highly by those within the metal community for its poetry and songwriting, but overshadowed by the story it represents. The lead singer was goaded into suicide by the guitarist, who was in turn murdered by the bass player, a church-burning neo-nazi.
