Almost lost me at the start, then Children of the Grave came on and the rest was amazing. Something about the first two tracks didn’t catch me, at all, but everything that followed are some of my new favourite Sabbath tracks. The guitar mastery is still here, the weird but cool panning of the instruments, the clicky bass, Ozzy’s terrified vocals, it’s all back and I’d even say just as good. Not as consistent as Paranoid but impossible to write off, and also wildly ... read more
This is one ambitious album, my lord, which is actually quite ironic because my opinion is very succinct. This is a great album, a massive undertaking (for the listener but mostly the band) and deserving of the praise. Everything I could say has been said a thousand times before: it’s amazing and I really liked most of the songs, but it goes flat around the latter middle before picking back up. I will watch the movie at some point, not just to appreciate the album more but it also seems ... read more
Okay this was good. REALLY good. I think I need to check out whatever the hell ‘darkwave’ is because this shit goes so hard. I heard a cover of Enjoy the Silence actual years ago at this point and I was obsessed with it. But as a fool I never looked into who it was actually by, so I just eventually forgot about it. Now like, a month ago, I find Depeche Mode and man… I’m lucky as hell. There’s so much on here to like, it manages to feel vast and expansive while ... read more
Okay so, I liked Sister I thought it was pretty good. I then had this recommended to me as one of if not just the band's best work. When I listened, I did NOT like it, I thought it was middle of the road at best and way too goddam long. That was about a month ago. Upon relistening, THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER. It’s not the craziest thing in the world but for the longest time I saw this album as a 5/10 that had barely anything redeeming and that made me pretty sad because all signs pointed ... read more
More peak Gorillaz, banger features, fire instrumentals and outstanding production. My biggest critique is that it felt a bit too long, some tracks feel like they could've been cut or shortened. Once it gets going though, it never stops, the momentum never ceases even on relatively calmer tracks, which works super well. And once again, how does Gorillaz manage to have so many instantly recognisable tracks that I somehow didn’t know was them, how do they do that??? That all being said ... read more
On first listen, I didn't get it, I thought this was just inferior to In The Court in every way. Now that I've had some time with the album, I've realised firstly, this is great what was I doing, and secondly, they aren't really comparable. Sure both are Progressive Jazz-Rock from around the same era with a prank as the second last track but while In The Court feels bombastic, this feels a bit more dialed in (although it's still huge, I don't really know how to ... read more
A lot more consistent than Tango in the Night, but I also feel like that album had more style to it and charm on those highs, not that this lacks it though. Some stupid iconic songs on here that I didn’t even know I knew. But those iconic songs are so goddam good even after dozens of unintentional listens, with my favourites being genuine just 10s. There’s like one song on this entire thing I didn’t enjoy, which is a big step up from their other work I’ve heard (yes I ... read more
Something about the opener bothers me. BUT WHO CARES ABOUT THAT. This is a classic among classics, the whole thing - but especially the last two thirds - are timeless. It has some of my favourite guitar work, synth lines and vocals I’ve heard in a while, and Prince’s shrieks are absurd and I love them, his solos are fantastic and he’s just a fabulous songwriter. And… of course the closing track, considered one of the greatest songs of all time (a sentiment I’d ... read more
I really just don’t have a lot to say. It’s hard to have sheer hatred, especially for something I don’t hate. I just think this album - and Tyler as an artist - isn’t doing anything appealing or worth my time. I don’t like his instrumentals/beats a lot of the time, I don’t like his flow, I don’t like the singing and I think his lyricism is just okay. He’s truly the most ‘not for me’ artist I can think of that’s widely loved. ... read more
I think at first I didn't really get this album, I loved the first three tracks and then thought it diminished from then on. After about a week I revisited it and holy shit. This has some of the most beautiful songwriting, guitar work and lyrics I've heard in a bit. The title is very accurate, there are points when the album feels kinda suffocating in a way, with huge walls of noise and I like it a lot, mixed with the crazy unique Slacker Rock riffs and the strangely Thrash-like solos ... read more
WOAHH NUMBER 100 (since I started actively listening to albums at least)!!!! And what a 100 for it to be. This is a monster of an album, one of the longer I’ve done. It’s essentially overflowing with joy and happiness while still actually discussing real problems that are still faced today - it’s hopeful and full of life, but not ignorant and shows how great Wonder is as a songwriter. Every song is timeless, near flawless instrumentals and despite being so long, the album ... read more
Breakneck pacing for an album, with almost every song being less than 3 minutes and having 15 songs this is one hell of a ride. Almost reminds me of Madvilliany where ideas are just tossed around and thrown directly at the listener, it’s pretty great. This has most of my favourite Pixies songs, all of my favourites from here are candidates for just some of my favourite songs in general. It's an absolute joy to relisten to, with pretty much no major dips in quality and an amazing ... read more
Now this is one beautiful album. Can it be repetitive at times? Yes. Are a lot of the lyrics corny? Oh my god yes. But is it one of the most majestic things I’ve ever listened to? Yeah, pretty much, for most of it too. The guitars have such a floaty tone, the rest of the band has this sort of hypnotic feel to them but in the lying in a field way and the horns are gorgeous with some of the prettiest swells ever. The singing can be a bit annoying at the start, but once you get used to it, ... read more
You know during the first third I was thinking this is pretty good, but it’s quite overrated. By the end, I was sold on it, this is an amazing album. Horns and piano in a punk album is not something I thought I wanted and it’s executed really well. I barely even paid any mind to them because they fit so well, it didn’t stick out as strange at all. The lyrics are also pretty great, especially some of the more edgy ones, they match the music perfectly and the tone on everything ... read more
THIS is what I wanted from Floyd. Some of the most majestic guitar, keys, bass and vocal work out there. Everything you could want is here. A beautiful tribute to their former bandmate and just an amazing listen. This stands toe-to-toe with DSOTM, and maybe even higher. The solos here are tremendous and my absolute favourite from the band, the atmosphere is unrivaled, it’s ethereal but also melancholic and the swells throughout each song hit every time. I knew what this album would be ... read more
70s Pink Floyd may just be one of the greatest runs in music history and this is another testament to that. It’s not my favourite of the bunch, but it’s still special, the guitar solos are probably the most insane and ethereal in their catalogue (apart from the obvious one) and the song structure is on point too, with it holding steady for the extremely long runtimes of each song. It’s a beautiful little album, and while it wasn’t all I had expected, it didn’t ... read more
Of course this wasn’t going to disappoint, but still, damn it’s good. Rap groups in their prime are a goddam enigma because, while a normal rapper will have their fair share of hard verses on an album, these guys all put their absolute greatest material forward and the others fill in the gaps with their strongest. And that creates this insanely phenomenal record, where there are pretty much no weak points. Plus I just really like early hip-hop, the instrumentals are always on point, ... read more
I really enjoyed this EP, a lot of fun moments and one song that I think is genuinely incredible, it's J-Rock done fantastically with some beautiful vocal and guitar work. But it was quite a bit overrated due to friends, I was expecting some masterpiece of music. Which yes is my fault entirely, but it also unfortunately does take away from the album a tad. This is great music, there's no denying, only one song really falters in my opinion, but I was hoping for more, as stupid as that ... read more
I just KNOW like half of these songs without realising, what a cultural chokehold and I didn’t even notice. This is a banger album, Feel Good Inc. is the rule not the exception, every song is at least almost as good. The features on this album are wildly phenomenal with not a single one feeling substitutable or generic, the synth lines are stupidly, unfairly catchy and the bass and drums are borderline hypnotic. Really awesome listen, it’s cool to find the origin of so many songs ... read more
Sometimes when I feel my most diabolical, I call this better than Remain in Light.
Haha, I simply jest. That being said though, you can really feel that they were only a year away from perfecting their sound. After listening to the previous albums and of course the one that followed this, I can see the progress as the band got closer to their peak. The abstract guitars, consistent, groovy bass and drums and the overbearing synths, this is all I could ever ask for and it has some of my ... read more
