Wowwww...difficult one to rate, this. The opening run of the first 5 songs really is extraordinary. I can already tell that Hammer is one of those songs that you wish you could experience for the first time again - the hit of that synth is just so good. What Was That is solid, not at the top of my fave Lorde songs, but a really decent call-back to Melodrama. But truly, the star of the show is Shapeshifter, what an extraordinarily beautiful piece of music. Full body chills. Man Of The Year is a ... read more
EUSEXUA was devastatingly close to being a perfect album. Each song, perfectly crafted and wrought, beautifully layered and textured regarding both the instrumentation and Twigs' truly remarkable voice. It's stunning! The first time I heard 'Eusexua' bass drop, it literally got me jumping out of bed to pace around in the middle of the night. 'Girl Feels Good' is such a...feel-good tune? Well, no shit. The Bjork-esque 'Room of Fools' is such a unique club ... read more
I'm finding Perverts a very difficult album to digest and review. Drone and Ambient are not genres I am familiar with, so I'll admit to not knowing what features make them 'good' specifically. "Punish" is still the absolute shining highlight: the ... read more
Sexiest album ever made. Menacing, ethereal, horny, beautiful, oppressive, hypnotic. Hardest cover art. "Angel" took me out back and shot me in the head. "Teardrop" floats you into the stratosphere just so "Inertia Creeps" and "Dissolved Girl" can drag you back down and tear you to shreds. The sound that comes in at 02:36 on "Risingson" owes me money. Nice of them to put in a couple instrumentals to stop and catch your breath before clobbering ... read more
There's an awful lot going on here, isn't there? If I was tasked with creating the most controversial, divisive album possible, this would be pretty damn close. Let's start with the positive: there's no doubt that Emily is a fantastic singer. The vocals on 'The Emptiness Machine' are phenomenal. It's a pretty generic song but goddamn, I just keep coming back to it. The gravel in her voice is so addictive. But it turned out TEM was the only song I'd like. ... read more
