With Act II, the Acts series really starts. Not only in terms of its massive jump in quality, but also because the story really starts here. The album starts with Hunter burying his mother, who purposely kept him away from the world, and Hunter doing what everybody would do in his position. Immediately take the train to the city, to experience love and heartbreak. As you do. He immediately gets a girlfriend and a job within the first 24 hours of being in the city by the way. I've been getting into The Dear Hunter the last couple of weeks. Absolutely falling in love with lots of songs from acts II, III and IV. Since I already have so many songs I love from those albums, why not go through all acts in order and actually follow the story? It's obviously the intended experience, because I'll be able to recognize every motif that's called back to on future albums. The problem with that is that they're saying pretty cringy stuff. Black metal hides the cringe with ... read more
It's been a while since I've listened to a new prog album, but this one has me feeling like I'm discovering the genre for the first time all over again. The Spark of the Archon has me feeling like I'm 17 again discovering Cockroach King by Haken for the first time. This album's sound is just so fun. There's sweeping orchestral parts and phenomenal clean vocals, which make the album feel really grand and ambitious. The story and lyrics are extremely corny, but if ... read more
