Egotrip manages to take the formula of chipmunk-soul sampling, which has become extremely overdone and uninspiring over the years, and add it’s extremely addictive charisma to make it one of the most enjoyable hip hop albums of the year. I can’t really pinpoint anything particularly bad about this album, however, there isn’t really much I can say I like about. As a dance pop album, I find it pretty bland, not really doing anything out of the ordinary or exceptionally in any area. The tracks that did pop out to me (Damn, Hackney Wick), as well as some ear catching moments throughout the album show a lot of potential for Rose Grey in the future.
The best AJR album to date. The front half of this album has so many genuinely good ideas. The title track is another of the bands staple dramatic openers that is done mostly well structurally with terrible lyrical execution. Touchy Feely Fool is extremely catchy but is once again held back by lyrics. The Dumb Song is easily the bright spot not only of this album, but of the band’s discography. First half I felt was decent with a couple highlights, but starting with Florence this thing hit me on a personal level that I can’t say many albums have done to me. I 100% expect this to grow on me even more.
