공원소녀 [GWSN] - The Keys
70

projects like this make me rethink my lack of interest in k-pop. "the aerialist (wonderboy)" and "tweaks" are especially fun to listen to, since they're so bouncy and airy, really sweet.

PINS - Hot Slick
60

although sonically, hot slick is pretty interesting, meshing a cool retro and sort of lo-fi energy with modern indie rock, it's a lot more annoying than i expected it to be. "bad girls forever," "read my lips," and "ghosting" are highlights.

84

following gfoty's extremely experimental and controversial album gfotv, ham chunks and wine is a magnificent return to form that blends her earlier, eccentric bang ("wide," "magicians wand") with a subtler and more vulnerable side that we don't see much ("by my side," "here with me").

Ada Rook - 2,020 Knives
93

fuckk,, i want to love all songs on here the same, but stuff like "september" really brings it down for me. there are softer songs on here that are good, but that's not one of them.

original score: 100
original review:
2,020 knives is ada rook at her most personal, with extremely emotional lyrics and deliveries, and the production is so much more developed and intricate than 2018's shed blood, which i enjoyed a lot as well. shrouded in noise, this album is raw in all sorts ... read more

Diplo - Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley Chapter 1: Snake Oil
18

this is offensively bad, and that's really all there is to say. it's bland as all hell, spitting in the face of country music everywhere. damn shame that orville peck is on this thing, he deserves better.

Backxwash - God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It
61

for a horrorcore album, god has nothing to do with this leave him out of it does what it needs to do, but for an enjoyable album, it needs some work. i didn't really like the delivery here, even if the instrumentals were decent half the time. it's certainly intense, yeah, but i thought it was underwhelmingly so. favorite song here was "heaven's interlude," which was a stunningly good use of a sample from eraserhead. "spells" was pretty decent, too.

Lady Gaga - Chromatica
84

i had very low hopes for this album. the singles were very underwhelming, with "stupid love" sounding so soulless and bland and "rain on me" lacking the experimentation that lady gaga used to bring to the mainstream pop scene. i actually liked "sour candy" quite a bit, but that's besides the point.

as it turns out, chromatica is the first lady gaga album that isn't a singles album. its best songs are wrapped in a euro house mystique, deep within the depths of the ... read more

Soko - My Dreams Dictate My Reality
92

my dreams don't dictate my reality is a really great goth pop album that draws inspiration from the old without sounding like a direct copy, which is nice for a change. i loved all the tracks, but "who wears the pants??," "peter pan syndrome," and "visions" all stand out.

Joan As Police Woman - Real Life
85

real life can be forgettable at times, but for the most part it's a really beautiful, really enjoyable chamber pop album. "feed the light," "i defy," "christobel," and "save me" are highlights.

Everything Everything - Get To Heaven
78

after admittedly skipping the band's second album, i can say that i enjoyed get to heaven, but definitely not to the same extent as i did man alive. in my opinion, it doesn't have the level of excitement or eccentricity that i expected coming from such a strong debut, and i think it suffers because of it. "to the blade," "the wheel (is turning now)," and "blast doors" are highlights.

Iglooghost - XYZ
84

xyz is an expertly-produced album that completely nails the chemistry that iglooghost, babii, and kai whiston have, with super catchy melodies and hard-hitting club bangers. "lux 2," "drown u," and "c thru" are highlights.

Anna Oxygen - All Your Faded Things
95

all your faded things is a messed up mixture of kate bush, devi mccallion, and everything in between. i loved it.

Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
49

i'm sorry i just, i just don't like it. romance and love and feeling warm aren't for me, i guess, since they make for such boring songs on this album. "the ocean" is the only thing saving it.

Sparks - A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip
84

a steady drip, drip, drip is eccentric, smartly-written, and overall a blast to listen to, but at times it definitely feels like it's a little long-winded. however, with lyrics this entertaining, it doesn't really matter a whole lot. "i'm toast," "stravinsky's only hit," "left out in the cold," and "the existential threat" are all highlights.

Jeff Rosenstock - NO DREAM
82

maybe i spoke too soon

original score: 94
original review:
admittedly, i've had a hard time getting into jeff rosenstock's music in the past, but with no dream, i get it. i finally get it. there's so much energy, so much passion, so much of EVERYTHING, and to top it all off, there's not a bad song on the album.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated Side B
82

dedicated's little brother has a rocky start, but it ultimately finds its footing thanks to carly rae jepsen's coherent and enjoyable songwriting, and the album's overall great production. although there's nothing that really lives up to my favorite song from dedicated, "i'll be your girl," there are definitely tracks on here that give the original a run for its money, namely "stay away," "summer love," "fake mona lisa," and "now i don't hate ... read more

The 1975 - Notes On A Conditional Form
51

the most boring band on earth continues to be boring, but for 80 minutes. admittedly, i really dug the more electronic cuts on this thing, since they sounded great, and if the band just committed to this style for the entire project, i'd have liked it a lot more as a whole, kind of like what happened last year with the bring me the horizon ep i really enjoyed. for everything that wasn't electronic, though, i was left waiting until the next burst of energy and that was super tiring. ... read more

Rachael Yamagata - Tightrope Walker
81

after an explosive beginning, tightrope walker mellows out and doesn't really carry the edge of its first three songs. i wish i did, but i'm glad that the rest of the songs are still quality, sometimes reminding me of what sia did in the mid-2000s. "tightrope walker," "nobody," and "ez target" are highlights.

Deaton Chris Anthony - BB
77

bb is the deaton chris anthony's debut album, and, like his most recent effort bo y, it's filled with tons of personality and influence. however's it's definitely not as intricate and thought out as bo y was, but it makes sense because it was also made like, four years earlier during dca's musical infancy. really love the vaporwavey feel that this thing has. "wi-fi or wifey" and "big wet wés" are highlights.

Perfume Genius - Set My Heart On Fire Immediately
65

i know that perfume genius can make an album that isn't boring—2017's no shape was an incredibly inspired and interesting album—so i'm not sure why he decided to change it up with this one. "whole life," "nothing at all," and "some dream" are highlights.
