Not all 10 tracks on the record reinvent the wheel ... but some songs drip in abundance with Cher’s influence.
It’s a surprise, sure, to hear Cher grabbing the mic from Agnetha, replacing her reedy naiveté with the voice of an older, throatier, and more self-assured woman. But by god, it’s glorious.
Dancing Queen pulls off a perfect balance of frothy effervescence and resonant emotional depth.
It's no musical masterpiece, but Cher's album of Abba covers is joyously camp – and also surprisingly poignant.
The pop icon turns Seventies classics into modern club bangers and brings out the dark burden of their late-career divorce songs.
Dancing Queen, an album of Abba covers that could easily have sailed by like glitter on the breeze, is often surprisingly ingenious.
It's just enough of an update to feel fresh, yet familiar enough to be nothing but a dose of glitzy, cheerful nostalgia.
It would be quite hard to describe these new versions as interpretations of the famous catalogue, when really they're replications.
For an artist who’s built an entire third act by carving out her own distinct niche in dance-pop music, the album feels surprisingly derivative, even anonymous.
This is essentially Cher doing ABBA karaoke, but I can't deny that I GOT MY FUCKING LIFE to this. I feel like my homosexuality got an upgrade.

Cher doing an ABBA covers record is kind of a no-brainer; “Dancing Queen” is a stunning project— Cher pays her respects to the original recordings but doesn’t copy them nor totally ignores them, she makes the songs her own & it works beautifully.
