Organic as dirt, and full of an acid-head's sense of space, this one's a winner from start to finish.
Four seems to be the exact right amount of Tets - three might be too few, five too many.
I think Rounds eclipses over some of Kieran Hebden's early works, which are also worthwile. Pause is one of those, with some excellent material on it.
Something makes it a bit of an autumn album for me: maybe just the album cover, or the colorful, but somewhat muted production, or just the fact that there are No More Mosquitoes (thankfully).

What Kieran Hebden achieves with his sophomore album is to transmit the desire that this pause should have lasted a little longer and a little more and a little more...
The intro to Parks is still one of his best moments. Not only is this album kinda underrated but even Four Tet fans underrate You Could Ruin My Day. Also the album cover is perfect to me. It’s exactly what I picture when I hear this.
Hebden's work under Four Set is known for its tender, almost ghost-like approach to IDM and Electronic music- but on Pause, the theme is 'masterful sparseness'. Hebden doesn't use any instrument or sound that isn't absolutely necessary for what he's going for. That's not to say Pause is a snoozefest- moments like the vocal sample ringing throughout No More Mosquitoes is jarring and far from 'calming'. It's not Four Tet's best, but it lays ... read more
