Pitchfork
His latest album overlaps between amusing insights and uncomfortable truths, making for one of the most compelling indie-rap listens of the year so far.
80
HipHopDX
From start to finish, the production is progressive and atmospheric, while lyrically, his wit and substance are matched by his honesty and introspection.

The Independent
Set to scratchy, fractured beats and sound-montages, it’s a welcome dose of no-age hip-hop in direct line of descent from De La Soul.

Sure he’s a smart rapper, but he’s a good rapper who infuses his music with melodies and meaning.

Clash
Eagle’s skill is in being relatable to the listener, approaching issues that could otherwise be interpreted as controversial with a soft-spoken and melodic flow that never comes off as preachy or aggressive.

DIY
It’s goofily serious, but rarely ever with the intention of fun.

Unfortunately, separating these high points is an unmotivating middle third of woozy dreamscapes, float-y vocal melodies and half-baked lyricism that, despite the odd pointed barb and clever two-liner, make for a difficult trek to the record's end.

Thanks for the recommendation @BatkoRakdos!

A very solid release from Open Mike Eagle, eventually I have to listen to all of their albums. Some of the tracks on here like the opener and specifically near the beginning are really great but near the middle to end part it falls off a little. It's not consistently great, but it's consistently good!

Weird beats, odd flows, no hooks, etc etc. The one thing that every abstract artist retains despite any amount of differences however is creativity, morphing hip hop from one thing into another. Open Mike Eagle takes this creativity and ups the ante. Dark Comedy is exactly what to call these on-the-surface bubbly and comedic tracks, since under their sweet coating is a sour and personal message from a man dragged down by his thoughts.

Possibly my favorite OME album. I love how he uses sarcasm to address heavy themes, pairing sharp lyricism with production that’s both catchy and heavy. The mix makes his flows hit even harder, and it captures that perfect balance of humor and depth that defines him.

Also just a side note: I really love the hook for "Very Much Money (Ice King Dream)"; "They can fly, run fast, read Portuguese;
None of us have very much money though ..."; Even though Mike is saying that ... read more
