Staind shows a lot of promise on Dysfunction, but you'd forgive a casual observer for thinking that it's an average alt-metal record, because in many ways it is.
It's not bad.
The riffs feel kinda dry and the vocals are okay. Not bad at all, I mean kind of a masterpiece for Staind.
The Nu Metal influence is not bad either here, the riffs do feel generic and dry though, not to mention the awful mixing on the guitars.
I definitely like Break The Cycle way more

Every couple of months, I'll forget this album exists and then weeks later I'll come back to it to see if it's still good to my ears, and every time, without fail, it is. The singing may not be the best at time, but I just love the harsh mixing of the instrumentation, as it really feels like the rawest version of all the instruments. This is for sure an album I will show my kids when I have them
Incredible album, I might even prefer it over Break The Cycle. While BTC has better polish and more melodic songwriting, this album is tighter, and delivers its raw, heavy sound flawlessly. It’s close with that album, but this might be Staind’s best.
